Fifty people, including celebrities and business leaders, have been charged in a massive college admissions scandal. Daniel Golden, senior editor at Pro Publica, has extensively covered college admissions. He tells CBSN how a system that accepts students based on factors other than merit left schools vulnerable to the scheme.

    • Teneysia Leno whatever happened to merit based entry? unfortunately I know that didn’t really apply for blacks. Jim Crow laws prevented blacks from attending the same public facilities as recent as the 50s and 60s. Blacks weren’t victimizing themselves. This was their reality after slavery. They are catching up. Years of oppression doesn’t go away in one generation. Just like whites built their wealth to pass down to the next generation. Whites had generations of a heads up. Blacks are doing that. Now things are moving more towards equality.

The best thing they can do is use these people and the info to stop this from happening anymore and track and find and shut down when this happens next time and the time after that and create precedence for, a prosecution of them. I would say these women will likely never serve time in jail but I will say they will likely pay for the entire value of the scholarship and a good portion more as punishment. • It angers me even more so that this idiotic mastermind behind this huge college admissions scandal told parents to have their kids fake a learning disability just so they could receive accommodations for the SAT when those accommodations should only go to students who actually HAVE disabilities. This makes me very angry because it could make it even more difficult for students who need the accommodations for testing or other matters to have access to them all because of students who were told to pretend to be disabled. I have cerebral palsy and ADHD, and I'm a student attending a community college because I hadn't taken the SAT or ACT tests. Parents need to be smart enough to know that having their kids pretend to be disabled abuses the system that has been put into place to help students who have actual disabilities.

  • re getting a medical exemption for a learning disability so students get more time on the SAT and ACT, i think the parents/students should be required to submit medical records re the disability that go back in time to when they were first diagnosed rather than just one doctor's letter saying the student has the disability. Any student who was suddenly diagnosed when they were a high school senior should be viewed with suspicion. And, if they spent all of high school without getting exemptions allowing them additional time to take high school tests, why do they need additional time for the SAT and the ACT? Just think about how easy it must be for these wealthy parents to get their family doctor or a friend who's a physician to simply write a letter claiming the kid has a learning disability? and, finally, I know it sounds like a lot of work, but why couldn't those who operate the SAT and ACT programs, make a database of all students getting extra time to take the tests based on a claimed disability, to include the name of the PHYSICIAN who provided the letter? (Just thinking there could be a "mill" of doctors who will do it for a "price", and perhaps Singer gave the parents a few of the doctor names for them to contact. If a number of students in various zip code areas are ALL getting a letter from the same doctor, that should be a sign something is going on...).

    @arx754@arx7545 жыл бұрын
  • The "REAL" problem with this story is that there is apparently an enormous disparity now between the qualifications for college entrance if you are not an athlete versus whether you are an athlete. Any time you have a disparity like this, there will be opportunists who look for ways to exploit that disparity. The most outrageous part of this story is why we apparently have lowered the requirements for athletes to enter college to such a great extent. It's not just in the revenue sports like football and basketball but now it turns out every sport at every school is allowing prospective student athletes to be accepted into college who aren't nearly qualified. Even the most prestigious schools in the country are doing this !! That seems like a MUCH bigger problem to me, than the Loughlin family And when schools assign full time tutors to special students in order to do EVERYTHING for them except actually take their tests, are they really "earning" a degree ? It seems like these assisted degrees should have an asterisk next to them, so that prospective employers know what they are getting when they are hired. WRZ 2020-08-12

  • Not many people realize that after the difficult processes involved in college admissions (aside from alumni), following the 4 years of undergrad, as time goes on your attendance at an elite blah, blah blah means next to nothing depending on the eventual career track. This stuff just mirrors “stage moms.” Type AAA+! Imagine the tremendous, anxiety & pressure & breakdown of family trust, ties depth of shallow behavior Et al. From hard experience I find pushing this hard for something is so not worth it.

They always pointed them towards domestics or the trades. This is no different; just another way to keep poor disadvantaged students down.

Plus, what a lovely life lesson these women are teaching their children, not to mention the underlying message that they clearly didn't feel their children could get into Hollywood "appropriate" schools on their own merit.

  • I kind of feel bad for Olivia. This is what happens when your parents are controlling and try to manipulate everything around you with money. The girl said she doesnt care about school. She was already making money from her beauty line in Sephora. She was already making youtube money. She was already successful, which is huge for 19. I get the impression that her parents made her go, and they didnt listen to her. So now, she's lost her business prospects (which was something she could've relied on prior to the scandal) and NOW NO SCHOOL WILL TAKE HER, bc her academic reputation is ruined. Her parents messed everything up!

  • The D.A.s office knew about what was going on for at least a decade before moving in on Rick Singer & these parents! Why? To hook as many as possible to make the case sensationalized! I'd estimate that they had enough to shut it down years before the bulk of the DEFENDENTS were arrested, before they even started looking at colleges for their children! This was a form of entrapment for many of them! What makes it worse is many of them had no clue that going that route to get their kids into college was considered illegal? What warning did the general public have about what could happen by paying someone to help them get their kids into any college? The state attorney for each state in our country has failed to properly warn people against pursuing their children's admission in the way that has now been deemed a crime! The end result of this case will be a MASSIVE MONEY GRAB by the GOVERNMENT!

  • All I keep thinking about is what a horrible example they've set for their kids. In an effort to help them, they've really done some lasting damage. This is just so selfish, foolish and downright cruel. They're only thinking of themselves, they want to look like they have these really smart, exceptional kids and in the process, have pushed deserving kids aside to put their kids at the front of the line. Shame on these parents, I hope they make an example of them. If they weren't stars, they'd be looking at some jail time for sure. No deals!
