  • It’s crazy how the enemy faction changed names 3 times within the space of 20 seconds

  • We need a sci-fi story where humans use cannons to shoot antimatter shells.

    • See comment by drcovell about using just the kinetic energy of a projectile launched a 1/1000th of *C* - a 100 gram projectile traveling at *1 million+ KPH* wouldn’t need antimatter to punch through several thousand feet of any known armor, unless it has a density approaching neutronium!

  • Second rule in interstellar war! Take their technology! Physics is physics, at this point reverse engineering and intergrating should be a standard survival practice. Suicide drones and detector drones should be Earths first line of defense. AKA the current war around Isreal. Think about it, many billions of suicide drones in the Ort, Kuiper and Astroid belts waiting to attack an invading fleet. Even if attacking out of the solar ring they will need to close with the solar ring and thus become vulnerable to drone attack. FYI captial ships will ALWAYS have a fleet / squadron commander an Admiral AND a ship's Captain, normally a Commodore (equal to Brigadier). Smaller squadrons, with no captial ships, can be commanded by a Commodore. Names change but lgoic the same.

  • Aliens made it all the way into the solar system...to Titan! ... without being detected?

    @darrinwebber4077@darrinwebber407726 күн бұрын
    • That does actually sound reasonable to me since distances are vast in space, even in our solar system. Our sun's light takes 67 minutes to reach Saturn, to which Titan is a moon. At these distances it is close to impossible to detect anything that, one way or another, doesn't scream "here i am".

  • Why is it that a majority of these sci-fi stories always have hostile insectoids with clicking mandibles? Are they the predominate lifeform in the galaxy? Gets old fast.."clicking mandibles, clicking mandibles, etc., etc., ad nauseum...smh

    • Ive noticed that a lot also. I wonder if there is an etiquette on the sub that wants it. I doubt it, but the frequency does make me wonder. It's not in the rules as far as i can tell

  • FINALLY a non-European name! Also, you can do better than a “Fraction of the Speed of Light: The web has numerous online converters for every type of measurement ! For example, if launched at 1/1000th of *C* the projectiles will be moving at *1 million KPH* (plus change). What is the *range* in this space battles? Is it a million kilometers? If so, a well-focused projectile would not lose ANY of its energy in that one second, while all energy weapons would attenuate according to the inverse square law: Kinetics just make sense! 😉

  • You might suppose that any hull or force-field, that would be capable of deflecting or absorbing random meteorites at FTL speeds, would be more than capable of handling projectiles from fire arms, wouldn’t you?😊

  • Sorry, but go home, this crumpled at the latest after the first skirmish and everybody tries to make nice, coordination blahblahblubs is not what happens after a military confrontation and captains in control of fleets, battleships or carriers? Seriously? That hasn't really happened since WW2, where ALL carriers had an admiral in command and all around most battleships as well. Oh and to note: A Naval captain is the equivalent rank of a full bird colonel, otherwise known as OF-5 and the highest rank attainable short of being a flag officer, as in Admiralty / Generality. IF you want to more or less copy existing rank structures similar to NATO, EDUCATE yourself, dammit. Otherwise, you have to establish your own system, in that case, be careful with exposition bombs, nobody likes those. In case you Captain was intended to be the "Hero Ship" you wanted to focus on, you failed. Things like that are especially hard to pull off in a large battle where your dear captain is not the overall commander. You'd have to focus on a smaller portion of the battle to be nearer the POV of said captn. and give a general overview of how the overall battle is coming along another way and probably less detailed, again - to make it clear who the focal point of your story is.

      @RonaldTrumpOfficial@RonaldTrumpOfficial26 күн бұрын
    • @@RonaldTrumpOfficial Eh, didn't even pay that level of attention tbh. Maybe you're right, but there are also a lot of amateur stories out there read by an AI and they can make a fairly amusing hackjob of them, especially if there are names with [ ` ´ ' ] or something along those lines in it.

      @Amokhunter@Amokhunter26 күн бұрын
    • It's amazing how you know absolutely NOTHING about how a battle works, especially space battles that take place on a battlefield of millions of miles. Do you really think a space war is not going to function the same way an equivalent battle occurred on Earth? Space battles are more than likely to be exactly like a WWII battle as direct confrontation is far more useful than remote battle. Space battles are more akin to naval battles of WWII than they are like ground skirmishes in the modern day. This is because space battles are generally going to be in a fluid medium, in effect.

      @protoborg@protoborg24 күн бұрын
    • @@protoborg NOBODY knows how a battle in space would really work, because we don't have the technology. The best I've seen so far in Sci-Fi was The Expanse and Babylon 5 as a reference point. However, I'm not lamenting the battle, I'm lamenting that the soldiers "in the field" are immediately hugging and singing kumbajah around the holographic campfire. Lets assume a best outcome scenario after a shootout with an Alien species, you stop shooting and withdraw into your own territory, then exchange diplomats, not send the people who were actively shooting at each other a minute ago. That, and the gross non-understanding of military ranks is what rankles me.
