Piezo Crystal pickups for something like an acoustic guitar pickup has an incredibly high output impedance. As was demonstrated, some sort of preamp is necessary in order to make it work.

By coincidence I did the exact same experiment right now. You should pry away the hammering mechanism, which is still in place here. The tip of the crystal assembly is a small 1mm rod and it's where it is the most sensitive. I think in your configuration here you only got a rather tiny fraction of the output voltage that is possible.

They actually use piezo crystals I think in Big and Small Sound Sensor electronic modules. They can't act as a microphone because the audio signal is mapped to discrete integer values to output the audio level.

I once tried building a ribon microphone, and when tying it out, it had loads of static, but with some "studio magic" I could clean it enough to actually hear what I recorded. It was bad, but it worked, so I thought. Turnes out, my condensator mic on the other side of the room was plugged in and live as well, so the faint voice I filtered out came from that and my DIY mic just made the loads of static. Was really hyped there, for a minute. But I think I try this soon.

A friend of mine tried to make the lighter's piezeo into an accelerometer, and use it for dead reckoning. He found that the glue for attaching plates on either end of the actual crystal had too much hysteresis.

@@mernok2001 yes, but the short circuit kind of gave him some "extra safety". I could be very wrong, but in a short circuit the voltage drops, not to zero but way below what the transformer is putting out. The current goes up tho. Maybe the voltage drop really is what saved him.

For those who don't know, there actually are piezo pickups for guitars which work on this basis. The vibrations of the wood are used the same way and, unlike classic electromagnetic pickups, piezo pickups can be used on classical and Spanish acoustic guitars which use nylon strings (not metal strings).
Thanks to him I managed to rip out a piezo thing and it's quite interesting and fun.
