A note on the DVD version. The one I have includes a scene that was cut from the film. It shows Chaplin having a physical exam before joining the army. The scene is shown in silhouette where the doctor pries open Chaplin´s mouth and accidentally he swallows the instrument.
in case people wonder at the little moustache, most men at the time had long moustaches. the use of gas in the great war meant gas masks became standard equipment, which led to the order to 'cut off the whiskers' in order to ensure an effective seal around the face. consequently, those men that left the service kept this style of moustache as a sign of their service. this is why charlie chaplin's 'little tramp' has this moustache. the baggy clothes were a nod to the demob 'one size fits all' suit that they wore. the little tramp is a diatribe on the societies that virtually abandoned those that gave their all on the front, as it was what created the hobos of post war america. it is also why hitler had the moustache he had, being a great war runner carrying orders to the front. amusingly, hitler was a huge fan of chaplin, even having private screenings of 'the great dictator', never realizing that it was charlie's lampoon of hitler himself. the irony is that 'chaplin' is actually a jewish name..

I thought I recognized Stan Laurel as a German soldier. Collapses on his back right after the French girl's house collapses. I think. Caught a glimpse earlier, as the house was tumbling down. Just recently I read that Chaplin was very stingy with cue cards. He preferred the visuals to convey information. His count was as low as a tenth that of others of his day.

I see who was an inspiration to Steve Martin and a possible influence on him being a great physical comedian ... This stuff is amazing even after so many years... Wow, Chaplin was a genius actor, way ahead of his time... I can only imagine if he was living in our times, the work he'd be making... But... Yet Again... Steve Martin comes the closest to being our modern day Chaplain... But that's only one man's opinion... And... I'm watching this while listening to a playlist I made and shmoking zum veed, a very nice combination I'd have to say...
