    @Barfywastaken@Barfywastaken Жыл бұрын
    • I KNOW RIGHT?? So many protagonists in movies nowadays are just straight up liars or selfish, I know it makes for an easy moral at the end of the movie but it’s refreshing to see a genuinely honest character every now and then

  • I've never seen The Peanuts Movie, though I've wanted to forever. But MAN. Captain Underpants. That movie is just fantastic. I think my favorite part is how they don't do that cliche of the main friends with opposing personalities ending up hating each other, only to make amends during the climax. Probably one of the most annoying tropes for me. And they had things set up to do just that! But I'm so glad they didn't.

    • Yes, I watched both movies and they pretty fit well in. CGI. I remember watching the Peanuts movie in theatres when it came out, but I only watched the Captain Underpants movie at home. To me, the Captain Underpants movie would be the first time one of Dav Pilkey’s characters would come to life (I also find it to be an improvement over The Boss Baby in terms of release order and was a good way to end the 20th Century Fox era of DreamWorks Animation).

  • Peanuts is an underrated gem, I love that it’s so simplistic. I agree with your point about the Snoopy side plot. It defines takes away from the overall effect of the movie, but… they gotta entertain the toddlers.

    @iamjoshuaiam@iamjoshuaiam Жыл бұрын
    • Not toddlers. Boomers. Snoopy was the draw in early Peanuts strips and animated features. He was the Hobbes to Calvin & Hobbes Calvin. He was such a draw that they made an entire movie just about him. "Snoopy Come Home." They also gave him a big part in the Peanuts trip to France.

  • If a hug was converted into a movie, that’s what the Peanuts Movie is. It’s so cozy and satisfying to watch, it feels organic and cute. Meanwhile Captain Underpants is a homage to the books it was originally based on, celebrating it’s humorous story and showing you the imagination of two fourth grade buddies in their own silly way. These movies meant a lot to me when I saw them and I’m happy they got the fair treatment they deserve.

  • Something that I only recently realized but appreciate a lot about the Captain Underpants Movie is how all the 4th Wall breaks are set up. They aren’t set up like normal meta jokes like winking at the camera, but rather they seem to be set up as if George and Harold are *imagining* their life as a movie. From them singing the DreamWorks theme at the start, to their fake credit sequence, to the “Flip-O-Rama” scene, it all feels like what a kid would do when they’re imagining their own life as a feature film. They think of what studio they’d want to work with, they think of the action sequences, they think of who would help with the movie. It doesn’t only add another layer of relatability, but it also furthers amplifies the authenticity of the characters being goofy friends wanting to have fun with their lives.

  • One thing I love about the Captain Underpants movie is that it's actually pretty bad at adapting the story from the books. It takes plot beats from books 1, 2, and 4, as well as just making things up, and yet despite all of that, it so perfectly captures what makes the stories great and is an incredibly charming and nostalgic watch. It's my defining evidence that an adaptation doesn't need to copy a story beat-for-beat to be great. This is a mish-mash of stories from across the books, but it still holds up as an incredible adaptation for how perfectly it captures the heart of the books.

    • Exactly! I hated it the first time I saw it (I was 12), because the story was so different, but now that I'm older, I've come to fully appreciate the other ways in which it's faithful to the source material. It's clear the people working on the film had a lot of respect for the novels. The Netflix series also does a decent job of adapting the general style of the books imo, but takes it in a slightly different direction.

  • Never watched Captain Underpants, but I just know that it's probably one of the few actually great Dreamwork movies (imo anyways) next to Shrek 1 and 2, The Bad Guys, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and How to Train Your Dragon 1 and 2. Who knows, maybe I'll definitely feel like a kid again when I watch Captain Underpants.

      @jmachero5852@jmachero5852 Жыл бұрын
    • @@jmachero5852 Yep. It kept the same dark elements and the traditional moments from the original Collodi novel. Let's see... - Pinocchio is a much more brash and rowdy character - He burns his legs on a fireplace - He kills the Cricket with a mallet - The Fairy summons 4 coffin-bearing rabbits due to Pinocchio's carelessness - Lampwick is originally named Candlewick - The "Whale" is much closer to its original counterpart, which is not really a whale but a giant sea monster called The Terrible Dogfish.

    • @@LazyOldFusspot_3428 Yeah, I get that the film is supposed to be much different than the Disney version but I find it unexpected that in the end of the del toro version is that Pinocchio DIDN’T become a real boy in the end. I wonder if that’s what happened in the original book. Not that I really know much of the original book.

      @jmachero5852@jmachero5852 Жыл бұрын
    • @@jmachero5852 No, in the novel Pinocchio did become a real boy in the end. He shed his immortal wooden body and took on a fleshy mortal form, but they kept the lifeless puppet in the corner of their house. I think I like the del Toro version better; it shows that, on the inside, Pinocchio is and always has been as real a boy as any boy can hope to be, and he doesn't need to physically change who or what he is in order to be thought of as such. But of course, Mr. Del Toro's intent when he made it was to send a message that it's better to accept people for who they are, flaws and all, than to try and mold them to force them to fit into a pre-established system, like the military camp does, for example. The intended effect of the original novel was different, Mr. Collodi lived in an Italy plagued by times of crisis and poverty, and all he really wanted with the story was to teach children that those who disobey their parents and don't work to earn their keep gain nothing but suffering. It's a very melancholic tale, even with Pinocchio getting what he wanted in the end, as even though he is now a "real boy", a model Italian citizen, his family is still heavily impoverished, and he still had his childhood essentially taken away from him, as he still lives in this meager and moribund state, toiling away in physical labor even as a young lad to keep him and his father from starving to death in an environment where there isn't really a lot to go around.

Going back to child voice actors, hand drawn animation, and staying true to Snoopy using a typewriter and those old style home phones, was all intentional and I love that they did that. Snoopy's storyline wasn't that engaging to me either, but if fits into the world and I'm sure others love it. I heard it was originally supposed to be called the Charlie Brown and Snoopy movie, and I think that would've been perfect, because the movie encapsulates their relationship rather than translating the entire Peanuts world and universe onscreen. Thanks for letting me gush about this
