Is That McCartney In The Crowd At Lennon's First Gig? We Investigate! The Birth of the Beatles Ep2.
The Birth of the Beatles.
The 6th of July 1957 was a truly historic day. That's the day that John
Lennon and Paul McCartney met. The Quarrymen, John's band, were playing at the Woolton Village Fete.
But two weeks before that John and the Quarrymen played a gig at a street party in Toxteth, Liverpool.
We have Charlie Roberts to thank for booking them in the first place and also for the photographic record that we have today.
One of the photographs though very possibly gives us more than we were expecting, begging the question ... is THAT Paul McCartney watching in the crowd? If so then an important historical event has inadvertently been captured on film.
We're going to do a deep dive in this video and investigate!!
We're also going to visit the location of John's first gig - in Rosebery Street and viewers of this video will be among the very first people online to listen to the school song that inspired the 'Quarrymen' name - the original band which was to become the Beatles.
Two weeks after this gig, John and Paul met for the very first time. You can watch our first video showing the exact location here -
The Birth of the Beatles Episode 1.

This meeting led to the Beatles and world and music history was changed forever. It would still be some years away that we would see the full line-up of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison.

Paul McCartney said he rode his bike to woolton fete.
Just ask Paul himself. Send him the pic.
Why doesn't somebody show the photo to somebody with connections to Paul, and ask them to confirm it?
Because it’s bollocks and this way gets a few clicks
@@cuchulainx3125 How do you know that ?.
Even if Macca himself said it wasn't him. Would those believing it was, change their minds?
Or just ask Paul himself.
lmao just ask Paul McCartney
I think you are spot on. I’m sure of it, that’s Paul. We need to get this in front of him pronto, so we can prove it, while we still have this living legend among us and before, God forbids, he suffers any memory issues us seniors are prone to. We don’t know what tomorrow brings for any of us, so somebody hurry up on this!
Well put. I will try Joey.
@@verynearlyinteresting Sorry, but William wouldn't remember. Obviously. Because it isn't him. Try with John Halliday instead. However he might have passed in 2018.
Very epic find & verdict. Both videos are very amazing insights on the modern world's greatest musical butterfly effect: the meeting of John & Paul. Many great things have the most humble beginnings. Just wish John & George were still here to feel the love we still have for them so many year later. Greatest band of all time! And salute to you for these visual treats & insights.
Thanks so much QuabmasM!
My girlish Beatle radar, as an original early fan from the day, tells me definitely YES! That is Paul McCartney in the photo. 📡
All these decades that I've looked at this photo and I've never even checked out the crowd. Looks like Paul to me as well. Interesting video!
Thanks :)
Great video! You do a good job making 1957 Liverpool come alive and feel very nearly real again. Paul's face changed a lot from '57 to '63, when most of us first saw photos of him. We would need to see more profile photos from '57 to be sure. It's the hairstyle and loose jacket that convince me that you're right. I'm left-handed and used to ride a bike to get around as a teen. Paul is likely standing to the right of his bike, holding the bike's handlebars on his left, and is closer to the camera so he looks taller.
This is so nice to read, thank you William :)
For the glasses, there is a photo of Paul wearing glasses taken in Hamburg near the Bambi Kino. good job!
That’s Roger Chells from Wellingmellon, I knew him well, yes, he rode his bike from Wurthinturth ‘round Bellford. Oh Roger, it’s good to see you mate, come ‘round to see us at Mirthgire, we’ll be ready with a pint!
I'd like to add a small but interesting detail - the Quarrymen gig on the 6th of July was at the back of St Peters church, right on the edge of a defunct quarry =^) Really enjoyed this video, a different but very entertaining presentation!
Thanks Andy! 😊
The romantic side of me says that's Paul, so it is as far as I'm concerned. I went to Liverpool last November for a visit, did a Beatles tour and also went on our own, including that church hall. It's a great city and music seeps out of every brick. Great vid, subscribed. Cheers.
after all this time-66 years ..surely McCartney would know if it was him and would have said by now. .it's a story that keeps being told endlessly...

Thanks so much Pete, what a lovely comment to receive!! A new one went out yesterday regarding the location of the Lennon stage - see if you can get chance to watch it, I think you'll like it. Tez. Ps greetings from England!
I've seen that photo a million times and never thought once to look at the crowd. I'd say it's Paul.
Loved this video, loved your presentation, and yes, I really do think that was Paul in the photo. He could have been wearing sunglasses. 🕶🚲
Yeah ... after all it was a nice summer's day. I wish I had said that!
I've heard that Paul does use glasses but his eyes are not that bad and he knew glasses were John thing.
I expected to dismiss the picture too, but his side profile is very very similar. If you look at the side profile of Paul on the Revolver cover, the shapes of his nose and lips are so similar to this picture. Only thing that marginally puts me off is that Paul looked a bit chubbier in the face in other 1957 pictures. Still, an intriguing find!
I think it’s it’s Paul. Certainly has his profile. I’ve seen enough pics over the last 60 years that I truly believe it’s him. Excellent info and stories! Great job!

You can probably tell from my handle that I am a Beatles addict.. in a good way. In 2008 I returned home to London ( Came to Canada in 50's ). we visited anything to do with the Beatles including St Peter's church where John attended as a kid. The custodian was amazing. He met us as we were searching the back cemetery for Eleanor's grave. He eventually took us into that hall across the street. He gave me a copy of the program from that eve featuring the Quarrymen. Along the back where you were standing, a few steps there, he showed the still evident traces of where the stage was there for that event. He said he was there watching Paul and John sitting on the stage steps, discussing songs... possibly to play together. Also... on the wall behind you there are a lot of pics and papers posted. Back in 2008, there was a display of the newspaper article showing the John Lennon drawing of a yellow whale, believing that it inspired Yellow Submarine. He said that the original is in a safe up in the office so they kept a copy of it on the wall for display. very cool. I know you say that Paul may be vague and cannot recall specific dates but has he been shown the picture? Surely, if not the date, he would certainly at least remember riding a bike and staying on it to attend the street party. Keep up the great work. I have subscribed as I really like your humorous style and great research.I have many pics and some vids from that encounter in 2008 if ever you are interested. cheers...
Outstanding…again!

3:00 it's funny how much his walk and talk looks like that scene from the Rutles.
Hi Steve, it's me, Tez. I'd love to know what scene you meant! Thanks for watching and commenting ;)
@@verynearlyinteresting there's a few scenes of Eric Idle as the earnest documentary narrator and this reminds me most of the one where he has extreme trouble keeping up with the mobile camera.
I’ve watched the clip now … how funny! Good observation 🤣.
That is NOT Paul. Plus, he's always been clear about his early meetings with John and he's NEVER said he saw them before the "Fete" on July 7th!
I asked David Bedford (Beatles expert) about this photo and he told me he had spoken to the person who took it. It is not Paul.
It looks like Paul but then you see the jacket and it more or less becomes Paul. I wonder if Mark Lewisohn knows....
Thank you for the video and good luck with the channel.

I am so pleased at last that someone has finally looked into this photograph, I have seen it several times before but without any comment as to whether it could be ? could someone just not ask Paul ?
It would be interesting to send it to his agent maybe ...
Do you really want to know? 😉
I admire you passion on the subject! Good work 👍🏻

To VNI: This was a very good video... and I really enjoyed it. Personally, I must confess that I would have loved this to actually be McCartney as it would have made this photo the most significant photo in Beatles history. But sadly, it's not McCartney. It is actually Paul Pilnick... truly it is. If you do just a bit of research online you will find an article that confirms it. Please keep the videos coming! All the best to you!
Thank you very much, most appreciated. Tez
Absolutely agree, it’s Paul. IMO he was even then considering his options…! I recall in Barry Miles Bio that Paul was aware of John, seeing him at the local shops, the newsagent and fish & chip shop come to mind, but this obviously is the first time he actually sees John play. Come to think of it, I wonder where George and Ringo were on this actual day? Now that would be interesting. Top notch delivery with this video😎👌
Thanks very much!
Ringo was probably playing on a real stage by that point!

Interesting! I hope to see more Beatles videos soon.
I mean, would anyone be surprised to learn that Paul watched John, decided he wanted to play with him/in his band, practiced for two weeks and asked Ivan to arrange a meeting? Paul is a mastermind and said many times that he noticed John and thought he was cool. Imo their meeting was destined - but not solely by chance.
I agree with every word. Tez. :)
@@verynearlyinteresting So you agree that it wasn't Macca in the photo?
Exactly. Paul is a genius. What could be more attractive to John Lennon than a Paul Mac showing up to demonstrate that he'd been studying john and knew how to tune a guitar? John seems to have fallen for paul at first sight, and who can blame him?

Very well made video - brought it all to life. Is it Macca? We all hope so, but really, it needs Paul's confirmation for me.
Thank you for watching and commenting Robutube. Tez :)
I agree that the profile of the face looks remarkably similar to Paul McCartney. But the ears are a dead giveaway that this can NOT be PM. The shape of the ear bears no resemblance to Paul's ears, therefore it can't be Paul in the picture. Also, I think that the young man in the photograph is taller than 5 -11. I think that everybody, including the presenter, wants it so bad to be Paul that it clouds their judgement.
Astonishing 🙌
That’s not Macca. Great vid by the way. Well presented.

What a lovely comment, that means a lot ... thanks so much BeatleDrama ;)
"Is That McCartney In The Crowd" is not 'clickbait' when the photo shows someone, who if it isn't him, is close to being his Liverpool doppelganger.
@@sg-yq8pm the term clickbait - while often associated with negative or misleading intent, is not in and of itself a deceptive practice but rather a marketing maneuver used very often in content creation, particularly in the KZhead space. As defined by Webster’s dictionary Clickbait ( on the internet) is: content whose main purpose is to attract attention and encourage visitors to click on a link to a particular web page. That is most certainly the case with this (excellent) video, which I have praised. No one should take offense.

I think it is Paul, but it isn't the first time he has seen John. Paul said has that he had seen John at the bus stop many times before they actually met.
Great video! I wasn't aware of your channel until stumbling upon this video. It would be great if you could credit the BeatlesWiki for its article published 10 years ago and laying out most of this info, including photos. When I wrote the article, I ended up becoming friends with Charlie Roberts, the photographer, and digitally restored three of his photos from that day which he now sells. Thanks!
Nothing about that photo suggest the man is on a bike. And, besides, Paul was 15 at the time; he sure wouldn’t have been that tall. Great video, though🤘🏼

Thanks Joel ;)
No way. Paul never wore glasses until AFTER he met John to make John feel better, not because he needed to wear them. There is NO WAY he would be wearing these glasses BEFORE meeting John and BEFORE he would even know that John even WORE glasses.
There is NO WAY you KNOW whether he wore glasses BEFORE meeting John or WHY he wore them AFTER, you TWIT.
very good video
Thank you :)
I think I agree with you. Paul would know for certain, so it's a pity that he doesn't comment on the matter. He has described on the July 6th meeting as being impressed by John's changing of some of the lyrics, but surely he would've already known this had it been him 2 weeks earlier as well, as they would've almost certainly sung the same songs?

I discovered this as well many years ago when I made a video about their meeting. (still on youtube) I too believe it is Paul. However.... I did talk to Colin Hanton back in October 2022 (wonderul guy) and he says it's not. Word is it's Paul Pilnick who died in 2021. Paul Pilnick played with Lee Curtis and the All stars, the Big 3, and Steelers Wheel (stuck in the middle with you fame) and was born in 1941. But I can't find an early photo of Paul Pilnick to make a comparison. I tend to think it's Paul McCartney and the person who could confirm it (other than Paul himself) is his brother Michael. You do have one thing wrong though in your assumptions. McCartney himself said he saw John around Liverpool prior to July 6, 1957. ie.. He stated he saw him on the bus and in and around Liverpool.
Excellent presentation. Yes, this without a doubt, Paul McCartney. The ears and chin give it away.
Thanks Apollo11! I can't say I looked at the ears much but will go back and look. Tez ;)
His ears look nothing like Paul's - are you blind?
I agree. That looks like Paul for sure.
Yep, that's my view. Thanks for watching James ;)
Well it could be possible that he was there in the crowd but it also possible that the person in the photograph is not Paul. I mean, there is no way to prove it and the photograph is low quality. And I think if Paul himself see this photo, won't be able to remember that it was really him!!

Wow! That Paul is indeed quite credible. Greetings from Chile.
Thanks Sergio ... greetings from England!
There should be some way to get confirmation from Macca. Six degrees and all...
At no time in 1957 was Paul McCartney 5' 11"" tall. At just turning15 years old, Paul would have been about 5' 6" maximum. There is no bike in this picture and Paul did not where glasses (unless he was fooling around for a photo).
Interesting to say the least. Looks like MACCA for sure. We need an interviewer to ask the question. Someone who Paul speaks to a lot. (Enter Howard Stern, or James Corden)... someone like that. Any way to forward this clip to any of them?
Nice suggestion!
I think you're spot on. That's Paul!
Thanks for commenting,Jim. Yes I think you’re right … it definitely divides opinion though. Tez.
@@verynearlyinteresting Well, I for one, didn't need convincing. I believed it was Paul straight away. No looking sideways at it, no squinting. 😊

LOOK, its well known in Liverpool by older folk, Paul got the 82 bus or 80 bus, got off and and walked along to street party, to see and hear John's group, then mix in abit.
Looks like Paul to me even without the well-laid-out evidence.
Compare the ears, sure fire way for identification, good as a finger print.
Yep, that's him!
Oh I forgot to add. It's most likely Billy Shears
It's probably him....or .... WAS IT BILLY SHEPHERD ALREADY PLANNING HIS MOVE TO TAKE OVER THE BAND!!!! No, it's probably Paul. It's almost like an Elizabeth and Phillip photo, and probably just as arranged. There was some biographer several years ago who was astonished to find out that Paul and John had actually met when Paul was doing his bike route (so like 13/14 years old) and they had (clutches pearls) spoken. He wondered why neither had told him that story. I thought that was hilarious. He seemed actually hurt personally by finding that out from others.
Some one needs to tell Paul to give a look here
Paul has said (in interviews) that when he and John fell out/argued, Paul would call John "four eyes!", so wouldn't make sense if he also wore glasses. I agree it looks like him but I think we would all "want" it to be him. The truth is whatever it really was so we may never know. Paul said that John used to reply "pigeon chest!" back when he called him four eyes, I don't get why.
Pigeon chest is term to describe a sunken in chest
@@yensilluapit’s actually the opposite of a sunken in chest, it’s where the chest sticks out

The cable for the amps went through the windows? Did they borrow those? They didn't even have electric guitars yet seem to me...maybe it was for a microphone or two? is there a photograph showing those cables?
Hi Thomas. You are absolutely spot on. Would you believe I have had an email from Rod Davis (Quarrymen - Banjo) on this very point. He tells me that none of the instruments were electric - but there was a microphone and the cable was indeed fed into Charlie's mother's house.
has paul seen this pic...he should know for sure ........i mean the jacket, glasses and he is so close to john in the pic......also..
Paul or not Paul. I doesn't change Beatles history but it is very intriguing! Paul mentioned in an interview a few years ago that he had seen John before the day he was introduced to him by Ivan Vaughn.
Paul has said he recognized John at the fete because he had seen him around before. Is this one of the places where Paul saw John? In addition, I think he is standing beside his bike with his left arm holding the handlebars and his right hand holding the seat. On the glasses issue... yes, he wore sunglasses that day, just like a regular human.
U make common sense!!
As crazy as it may sound I'm born in Liverpool in 1968 so grew up in the 80s and even then sun glasses weren't a normal fashion accessory back then especially in rainy England. I remember thinking how cool Bob Dylan looked wearing shades . I very much doubt many people especially 15 yr olds wore sun glasses in 1950s UK. In fact Stu Sutcliffe is the only Brit I seen wearing shades from back then cause he thought he was James Dean. You couldn't even find Levis in 1950s UK.
I've seen this photo before but,I've never seen Paul at the gig ,if you see what I mean
I don't know it sounds very believable as a hang that happen we would need a time machine
A time machine would be good! ;)
It's highly probable that it is him but Paul is not (as you claim )"Over Five Eleven" and never has been. He's possibly even shorter than that now what with him being elderly.. And those examples of "Pre-Beatle" Paul wearing glasses are obviously from when Paul was in The Beatles.Just look at the hair. And some photos from the Revolver sessions.
I dont know if those pics are suppose to be from before the Beatles of Paul wearing glasses. I think they were pics of Paul wearing glasses that the video maker could find. But I remember hearing stories of Paul and I think other Beatles as younger men wearing Buddy Holly glasses because he was so popular with the English kids and American too but here the young British kids includes the Beatles. But I think they wore a jacket and shoes Buddy also favored or was pictured in more likely. Like later teens were influenced by the Beatles and other rock groups during and after that time, so there is no reason to think that the Beatles and their teen friends and peers would also. So I think both can be true, Paul wore glasses before the Beatles and those pics are from later in Paul's life most likely as a Beatle. I do think that is Paul in the pic but I wouldn't bet my last dollar on it. It makes sense and Paul was friends with people who were friends with John so its likely but who knows. Its a fun little story and it would be great if someone showed Paul the pic and ask if it might be him. He might remember the situation enough to know if he was there in the first place and he might remember if he stood in that area. Fun video.
Paul was, is, 5’11”, at least according to answers he gave early fan magazines. But over 5’11” - I think that means 6’, doesn’t it?
