How to Change ATV Tires Yourself at Home!

This video shows how to mount 4-wheeler, ATV, Go-Cart, and Lawnmower tires yourself, at home, using no special tools. I show how to quickly break tire beads, change the tire, and reset the bead.
In this video, I'm mounting wider tires onto a Suzuki z90's stock 5.5 inch wheels.
The Tire Pressure Gauge I recommend for low-pressure tires:
amzn.to/2H6aMAD
The off-brand, cheap tires I'm mounting in this video (by the way, they are awesome, but actual size is more like 17x8x8, rather than 18x9.5x8, which makes them perfect for youth quads): amzn.to/37ifCFW
The cheap tires I will be mounting on the front of this Suzuki z90: amzn.to/2ScRYGw
Tire Valve Core Tool Set:

  • One other tip, too make the tire more flexible leave the tire out in the sun when you pull the tire off the rim. A cold rubber is much stiffer and a warm to hot tire is very good. On the tire and beating the tire off, we use a long screw drive with a cheater for more leverage. A good video fwiw

  • You my friend are a tire machine! That's how it's done. Money saved is money earned. When you learn to do those kinds of things the old fashioned way you don't take it for granted. I broke down and bought one of the mini tire changers for my business and let me tell you I appreciate it more than I can express after doing it the old way so often.

  • I've been changing my dirt bike & dual-sport tires for years, but I thought the smaller-diameter ATV tires would be a PITA. You made it look like something I can handle. I figure I'll give it a shot. Like you said, the drive to & from getting them mounted takes a while. Your bead-braking method is priceless. Thanks for taking the time to share your skills & knowledge with us. 👍👍

  • I've got a friend who once worked in a tire shop for a long time. I swear he could take off and remount any tire with not much more than a Popsicle stick! Like you, he puts his entire weight and whole body into the project. My dad ran a service station for a long time and I watched the guys fix flats all the time. After watching people like you and those guys make it look easy, which I know it really isn't, I am tempted to give it a try myself! I enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing it.

I checked on a set of tires for my fourtrax 300 and the price he gave me I went on line an bought them, so by the time I would have had to load, drive and wait to get serviced it adds up. I think I"m going to go get a tire changing tool with bead breaker from HarborFreight for $40 :/ EDIT: Tire changing tool was AWESOME for breaking the bead and for getting the tire off, but didn't help get the tire back on. Had to work tediously on the ground to get the tires onto the rims. That kicked my butt...

  • Quick tip: To put a lot of air into your tire with the valve stem removed, push the quick connect on the end of your air hose onto the valve stem of the rim and get a whole lot more air to bead seen the tire on the rim. When both beads are pop'ed on remove the quick connect from the valve stem and insert the and insert the valve into the stem them air up to the desired pressure using an air chuck on your air hose. Your welcome !

  • Way to go. I have changed a few this way but needed a refresher. Gets a little harder when you're 72. Headed back out to pull the rim off the mower and put the last side on. Only thing to add is that if you have problems with the tire slipping around, use a vise grip on the rim flange to keep it from rotating while you are trying to mount it slowly and prying little bits in just like he showed. Pretty smart and you can tell he is a thinker when thing don't go quite like planned.

That being said, I still change my own, but I have a bead breaker for my press, and nice ridged stand to work off of, and the proper tools. If I was still changing them on the ground with screw drivers, I would be looking pretty hard at the place that does it for $12/4 wheels.

This will give me the opportunity to buy cheaper no name tires as well...I only ride on my property and use the ATV more for work on the property so I don't need fancy branded tires. Thank you very much for posting this...I am definitely going to try it!

  • Awesome job. To make seating the bead easier, I always put a ratchet strap around the middle of the tire. It works great, but a little scary when you release it.

  • Man…I needed to see this!! So fed up with so businesses!! Ordered new tires and rims but could not find anyone to patch the holes. I definitely understand that these tires are old and would NOT complain/sign something saying they are responsible if it goes flat. This is somewhat how my Dad showed me too! Thanks

  • Your right about the cost. Went to a couple local garages and the cheapest I was told for mounting my tires for my Polaris ACE 570 was $20 a tire. Took me a couple hours to do all four tires and was the pain in the ass a couple times but well worth it.

    • My grandma was an old farm chick that loved getting her hands dirty. I remember her back in the early 90's in her 50's busting tires in her driveway with a pair of crow bars. She was a tough lady.

  • Thanks for the video, really helped me changed 2 tires. I used a bobcat to drive on the tires to unseat the bead, worked great. Also I have a stove in my shop and I put new tires in front of the blower , turning tires around periodically, the heat really help the stiff tires loosen up a bit. Took no time to mount after they heated up. I would recommend replacing the valve stems, you don't want to mount a new tire only to discover after that the old stem is no good.
