  • I was on the USS Constellation in the 1970's with VA-146 flying A-7Es. When an aircraft bolted more than 3 times he owed the squadron a case of beer. We had a number of pilots land in heavy storms and exit their planes shaking and covered in sweat when they were just about out of fuel, scary times for all of us.

  • The C130 landing and take off without using arresting cables, or catapult for take off is nuts, i expecting to see JATO rocket assisted takeoff and and landing. (they did short combat exercises on video reverse mounting the JATO rockets to stop the C130) but i dont think it was ever used in real world circumstances.

    • The general making the bet with a Navy Admerial that it could be pulled off risked a lot of lives for that stupid stunt. Just to say it could be done. Was a dumbass idea.

  • I really want access to that machine shop! Not for any of the secret stuff or weapons.... but that looks like a nicer shop than any that I've worked in. Plus an auto-darkening mask is hard enough to come by. (Is an oil company going to spending that kind of money on something you can do by nodding your head to drop the faceshield).

  • A lot of misinformation here from people who have apparently never landed on a carrier deck.

  • Fresnel lens: That dude was French. The consensus is the 's' is silent in Fresnel. Even the folks in Des Moines IA know that.

  • So you don’t have to watch a 15 minute video. When landing, right after touchdown, the pilots go full throttle for a second or two for they have the power to get back into the sky should they miss the cables or the cables break.

    @jordanj.2886@jordanj.2886Ай бұрын
  • imagine being within 100ft of that arresting cable if it snaps while the jet is at full throttle. Be like the beginning of that movie "Ghost Ship"

    @wtfmanicanthaveaname@wtfmanicanthaveanameАй бұрын
  • When I was on the USS Independence no one was allowed on the flight deck or cat walks aft of the island during recovery operations. I notice that isn’t the case any longer. The reason for the restrictions was in case if an arresting cable snapped it could cut your legs off.

And what about slamming the car door, everytime they get out. 🙄 There you are, in your F16, driving the family to Walmart and POOOF! your windscreens gone. You'll be waiting a while for a tow truck in the Pacific ocean...
