  • I was adjusting a plugin limiter (and saturator) earlier today and for whatever reason, in experimenting with different oversampling options realized the highest isn't always best to my ears. I actually turned it off altogether on the latter in processing a kick drum. I've learned a bit about aliasing and all that so can't truly explain my rationale. Hearing things in context, that is, in the mix is really important.

    @Brutuscomedy@Brutuscomedy7 ай бұрын
    • Often I can’t hear the difference in context either. Or even in solo. We probably get more hung up than we should on certain technical specs than we need to. Thanks for watching and commenting Andrew.

  • PLAP'ers - almost all videos really revolve around rock music. Any chance Joe or others would do a look at plugins in other genres? Like a Jazz kit or other popular music? I know the tips translate but many videos sound like how to beef things up for rock recordings.

  • Dude, I JUST started using the Shadow Hills on my drum buss, and wowsers- yes - it really does what you said it does! My other regular go-to's on the drum buss are the old ToneBusters RealBuss, the Ignite Amps PTQe-X eq (I like it better than my Waves Pultec) and the StillWell Event Horizon limiter/clipper. Only on super-heavy stuff do I use a saturator - maybe an Audio-Assault Headcrusher. Gotta be careful there - it doesn't do subtle.

    • @@InTheMixJoeCarrell - You're very welcome. I have a project that is at that critical final stage of mixing (12 songs) and this so-called mastering compressor is helping me get that final 2-3% drum *pop* in the mix without overbearing the mix. There are loads of BGV's (our congregation double-tracked), and plenty of B3 gluing everything together, so it's already pretty thick. Using the "Discrete Iron" preset to begin. Love it. Been doing this full-time since 1997, and even at 62 we "can be taught"! Thanks for this.

  • @InTheMixJoeCarrell - Great video Joe!!! I love how you demonstrated the drum processing you use. The drums really sound good. Everyone knows that a great drum sound starts from recording great sounding drums with great mics and great mic preamps. You really didn't say anything in the video about how the drums were recorded and I'd really like to know, assuming you remember, what you did when recording these drums? Did you EQ or compress on the way in? I'm a drummer for many more years than I want to admit and want to get the best recorded sound I can!!! I'm guessing that recording process could be a whole video itself. Thanks for what you do for PLAP and looking forward to future videos!!! Bless you Joe and hope you had a great B-Day!!! 😎🎶

    • Thank you Tom!! It was quite a few years ago but likely some eq on the kick and toms. Also probably a little top on the snare. Lite compression on the snare top and bottom, kick, and heavier on the rooms. That was likely all.

The SSL Bus Compressor Native lives on my master bus until I purchase the hardware 😅. I have the SSL Native Channel strip and will have to give it a spin on drums. I have yet to wrap my head around the shadow hills. I have it, but got lost as it is not laid out intuitively. Luckily it was free because of my coupons with Brainworks.

    • Thank you! More is on the way 🎉 The resonance would really be song dependent. On this song on I remember well that we were playing along to some loop bits with a variety of backbeat elements. So everyone felt like we needed that rain for a sense of aggression and also separation. In the mix, it actually worked great. I’m pretty big on snare drum tuning matching this song. Check it out, Caleb Lovely “Smile”. Thanks again

      @InTheMixJoeCarrell@InTheMixJoeCarrell8 ай бұрын
    • I guess the song didn't change key. That could get quite unpleasant otherwise. Since I never write a song that doesn't change key, I couldn't ever leave a snare humming like this. Drum tuning is fairly irrelevant for me because I use so many non-diatonic chords.

  • Super cool! I must be doing something right, cause I felt like I was watching Joe describe my drum workflow almost exactly! Question: Why do many mixers put their SD sample track as a separate track? I use my Trigger plugin on the SD track and use/automate the mix knob in Trigger. In the past, when I have made my trigger a separate track, I had to group it to the SD track for volume adjust, seems like more hassle?

    @thaddeuscorea@thaddeuscorea5 ай бұрын
    • I personally always want mine printed as a separate track. It will live with the project forever and never be tied to a sample that isn’t part of that session. Plus, typically I will EQ it or compress it or send it to parallel treatments differently than I do the primary drum.

I was using nuendo and the ssl channel strip 2 plug UC1. Im thinking maybe it could be the daw. For sure the other day I was on some percussion and had dialled in amazing gate sound but reopened the session and it was 'spitting' not how it was on the original day; I believe that its important to 'capture' the magic, on time based stuff, like gated percussions, and, the first vocal reverb automated ride and delay etc. But even though that is my observation, Im not going to lol because that would be a pain in the ass! Thanks for the great video!

    • Thank you James. When I say analog “punch” I’m more referring to when adding high mid frequency or boosting substantially through the eq (and it’s active electronic circuitry) it hits harder after processing. A very different thing than a digital signal boost without hitting either a real or virtual analog circuit. It’s very hard to put into words, but API and SSL are two of the very best for this. Which is why they became THE sound of modern aggressive music whereas other circuits and digital software can sound “polite” or soft. Which is also valuable. Again very hard to put into words. But I use various tools to shape the end result. Am I trying to push the listener back in their chair with power? Am I Trying to pull them towards the speakers with warm round edges?
