    • Apparently they had a deal that whoever reached the top (or bottom) of the Via Santa Caterina first would be unchallenged to the line. Kopecky apparently 'almost' broke the deal by accelerating to the line. I think most people know Kopecky could have won it easy. That said, Vollering has paid her dues, she's been a domestique on the national stage for AVV and AVB and others, so she's toed the line, played the game and now she wants to be paid in kind, now she's the team leader. Anyway makes for a fascinating season ahead, especially after watching Kopecky winning on Jebel Hafeet in the UAE Tour.

  • An athlete isn't paid based only on how exceptional they are, how many competitions they win or how hard they work. They get paid based primarily on how much profit they bring to their employer and how much other athletes are willing to work for. Women's sports have a catch-22: they bring less revenue, so they get less media exposure, so they bring less revenue, etc. Paralympic athletes suffer from this to the extreme, but it is not something people talk a lot about.

    • That was the exciting thing about ABC's Wide World of Sports decades ago, all the sports coverage not seen elsewhere. Same with ESPN in its early days. Interesting to see what's happening now with Caitlin Clark and all the excitement over women's basketball because of the new fans she has brought to the sport. And it is mainstream news and sports coverage that has given her the spotlight which she deserves. And for sure it'd be great to see top women cyclists and events get the media attention which grows their fan base and the sport.

    • Well, said. When Chris Horner says all women (pro bike racers) are undervalued the key reference shouldn't be the contracts of the men's pro-peleton it should simply be ROI in women's racing. Pro sports are foremost market bound commercial enterprises specialising in entertainment. Their product revolves around athletic performances. The value of those performances, no matter how individually exceptional, is expressed in profit, and the performer's potential ROI is reflected in how much others are willing to invest in (pay) her. There's a reason Taylor Swift is paid orders of magnitude more than the guy busking on the street corner even though that guy may be an equally talented musician. The business of pro-sports is replete with athletes and team owners miscalculating each other's worth. If Vollering is indeed being 'disrespected' then there should be no shortage of other teams willing to pay her--literally--the respect she's due.

    • @@robbchastain3036 True. But even this year the men's NCAA is all over CBS and basic cable. The women's tournament is largely on "extra fee" channels. Women's cycling is in somewhat the same boat (US). There are a LOT of us who miss Wide World of Sports, and I don't understand why it's never returned. I would think there are a lot of low-visibility sports that would be happy to get a moment in the limelight. And there's that great tagline and video: "The thrill of victory ... and the agony of defeat."

    • More an athlete is paid on how much advertising or simply put name recognition a sponsor gets that is connected to that athlete. Very few athletes directly sell merchandise but all athletes can get the sponsors name recognition. Only MJ, Tiger Woods, James and such athletes at their level really sell large amount of merchandise (tickets, clothing, sporting goods, and possibly anything a sponsor would like to sell), ie you see them using it so you buy it. 🤔🦋👊

  • Thanks for your insight Chris. I know a couple of Dutch ex-pro female riders and all of them told stories about how big the lack of respect is. Demi hasn't given a detailed reaction yet, but she has said that she was amazed about SD Worx's story to the press. It shows how opportunistic cycling teams are. But this situation will come back to bite them in the ass. The Netherlands is probably the only country in the world where women's and men's cycling get similar media attention. That isn't a big surprise when your country has riders like Marianne Vos, Annemiek van Vleuten, Anna van den Breggen en Demi. And therein might lie a problem for SD-Worx; Lotte still has a substantial fanbase in The Netherlands, but this move will make her the villain, even though she probably has no part in the decision making. On the other hand: this transfer might also be a good thing for both Demi and Lotte. I remember reading that Annemiek van Vleuten signed up for Movistar and every cycling fan thought she was crazy. It later turned out to be her best move, as she got the space and the funds to prepare for any race how she wanted. She was free to do these (to other female riders) maniacal training sessions. Annemiek has said that she noticed a similar approach to training in Demi. I am hoping for good times once the dust settles.

  • you seem confused on how 'worth' is determined. Vollering can win all she wants, twice as often as Pogacar, but if the team management can't parlay that into larger sponsorship contracts, that means that the market has decided that her wins are not worth as much. As Ronda Rousey replied when she was asked about the apparent unfairness for women's sport contracts, especially given that she was at the time the highest paid fighter in all of MMA, Dana White didn't pair her to be nice to the ladies, he paid her what he did because she sold the most tickets. It's not even team management that sets what the riders are worth, the sponsors do. If the ROI was there, there would be bidding wars for the right to sponsor her and others.

These issues are both historical and numbers driven (i hope the situation improves with the general increase the level of finances coming into the sport). However, you need to consider the wider context before judging on the dynamic between Lotte Kopecky and Demi Vollering. Lotte was already an accomplished rider before joining SDW and i dont think she was brought to work for Demi (Demi only really came into her own last year). I see 2 best riders in the world with different rider profiles, LK as a classics type rider while DV is more of GC - operating on this model would ensure the 2 alpha riders could coexist in the team. I think DV failed to understand this last year at Strade Bianche in her push to be the undisputed team no 1. You don't sprint to deny your team mate (an accomplished rider like LK) and expect her to work for you in the GC.

And that can't just be due to management treating them badly, they literally (for Alaphilippe and Agreen) got one of the biggest salary deals the team ever did, something that was regretted by the management when performances went down so much. Same for the "trade" thing, that was literally a few months back while the spring classics riders haven't been performing for 3 seasons. This also doesn't make any sense in that it undermines their future value. Especially now in a contract year they'd do everything to perform well. And despite some few hiccups, these riders have been pretty unanimous that they like riding for the team and wanted to stay (at that moment). Also of it was such a teamwide problem, this would also impact riders outside the spring classics, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Over the last ten years they have dominated women’s cycling, and they could basically decide and execute whatever they wanted. Partly because of smart management that was ahead of its time in the women’s peloton, partly because of the biggest budget. I think the frustration might also be so big because they realize that women’s cycling landscape is drastically changing. Big men’s teams like UAE, Trek, Visma and Movistar and a big brand like Canyon are taking women’s cycling more and more seriously, and they have the money, know how and facilities to dominate in the future. Losing Vollering will probably the first of many dominoes that will not fall their way in the coming ten years.

She was so dominant that she could gift Reusser two WT stage races (Itzulia, Suisse) and still ran away with the UCI rankings. If SD Worx want to continue to dominate women's racing, why didn't they try to keep her a little more and made an offer that would've been worth a reply?

  • Only way to improve women’s cycling and thereafter the contacts is to cover it and give the public the opportunity to watch it. The sponsors want exposure and if they get this they will improve the contacts. The only coverage of female cycling I saw last season, and it wasn’t much, was on this exceptional channel. Unfortunately our host only has so much time and has to spend it on what is popular and that’s the men’s big races. Maybe Chris could get Garrett to do the women’s season as part of his lengthy apprenticeship for us.

    @dotherightthingbro@dotherightthingbroАй бұрын
    • SD Worx is a Dutch payroll and HR-company with most of its business in The Netherlands and Belgium, so that is where their cashflow is coming from. Coverage of women's cycling is very good in The Netherlands and getting better in Belgium (probably due to Kopecky's success). So if those bases are covered, there is room for bigger salaries. Cycling is a big sport over here (The Netherlands) and it is a religion in Belgium. In places like the US it is a sidenote overshadowed with sports with sticks and balls and oblong things called a 'football'. The US isn't a big concern for most sponsors in cycling at the moment.

  • Incredibly bad team management. On a Dutch news website Vollering is quoted being "a little bit surprised by the team's statement". From which one might conclude that Vollering might still have wanted to work something out (which is not exactly impossible, what if Specialized decided to match the difference - as it has a track record of paying for important sponsored riders to continue riding their bikes, e.g. Sagan and Cavendish) and not wanting all of this drama out in the open. The season has barely started and SD Worx has already antagonized one of their star riders, who might just disregard all team orders from now on A. to display and increase her market value even more and B. out of pure spite... SD Worx in possible disarray and their stars in outright competition might make for some interesting races (for the neutral cycling fan)...

  • SDWorx apparently made Vollering an improved offer for a new contract, but it was clearly a money issue on both sides. The big money from the Emirates - according to some media she could earn 1 million euros per year - cannot be competed with, especially since SDWorx had just given the current world champion Kopecky an improved contract, and the financial reserves are not being inexhaustible with a team from the Low Countries, especially when you see who is still on the roster (Wiebes,...) and needs to be payed. What is striking from SDWorx's communication is that they actually said that Vollering's management did not even have the courtesy to respond to or refuse the offer made. Deafening silence. Which, if true, basically tells me she already signed elsewhere for a lot more money and knew SDWorx could never match that. But not even responding to a formal offer shows a lack of class, at least from Demi Vollering's management. And Chris, overhere it is not considered to be kosher to mention in the media the amounts offered during contract negotiations. That may be an American thing, but it is certainly not the Dutch-Belgian culture where such matters are considered private. If Chris Horner as manager of a Belgian or Dutch team would do that he would be crucified by the media. You also NEVER hear a Patrick Lefevre mention exactly what amount he pays or offered his riders. That's up to the individual rider to decided whteher he or she wants to share that.

    @TheLanorth@TheLanorthАй бұрын
  • While "good deal" is obviously not good deal, i dont think woman cyclists can be compared to mens cyclists in pay. Basically men cycling carries women cycling. Men races get much more viewers which is at the end ultimate argument for someones worth in sport. That is the reason why football stars are paid in hundreds of millions while cyclists are paid few millions (top stars). That doesnt mean pogacar is not top tier sportsman at the level of messi for example. And i dont think men cyclists carrying woman cycling is bad, its actually good cause woman cycling has head start and can progress much faster than men could. Its just that woman cycling is still very much in infancy and needs time to progress, it didnt have time and money to attract top tier girls to the sport, at the end its about money, bigger the pay, more girls will train and try to turn pro. I would gladly hear feedback from people and you Chris, if my reasoning here is on point or iam missing something.

    • While this might be true globally, locally it certainly isn't. In the Netherlands women's cycling is as big as men's cycling is, in views and coverage. Belgium is fast getting to similar level. SD Worx is a Dutch company, like Jumbo is. They aren't banks with aspirations to conquer the world; they are an HR-/payroll company and a supermarket. Their main concern is making money in The Netherlands and Belgium. The base for equal pay is there, especially as athletes like Van Vleuten, Vos and other female (ex-)riders get more coverage outside cycling races than their male colleagues do

An error may be Vollering can find ways (she’s amazing) to beat Kopecky outside the Grand Tours as well. The women’s Pro tour is establishing the Grand Tours still and the some of the big classics (Roubaix). Personally Vollering leaving is good for the sport as it puts her against SD Worx with exceptional backing. Five years from now the women’s world tours landscape will be very different. Vollering will be on a great team, and hopefully well paid so let’s enjoy the rivalry!

TDF male version is the 2nd highest viewership of any sport event beating the superbowl several times over. The tour de femme has about 2-3% of the viewers of the male version and the best paid athletes are 4-6 million in the male version.

    • That's watching things through a ridiculously ASO-tinted glass. ASO sells that the number of people who theoretically could watch the Tour all actually do, then multiply that number by 21 (as if each and every stage was watched by a completely new set of people), then double it because the start of the stages is broadcast on France 2 and the end is on TV1. Consequently ASO claims that the Tour is watched by 800 million people 🤣 If the Tour was watched by so many people, how come the money the riders and teams earn compared to other, supposedly less popular sports is a joke? How come the Tour de France winner earns less than the snooker world champion, with a whole lot more expenses on top? How come the amount of views cycling gets on the internet - where ASO can't cheat it - is tiny? Most watched highlights of the 2023 Tour: 383k Views on this year's Super Bowl: 10,6 million Views on the last World Cup final: 22 million I can't believe how it's not obvious that cycling is a niche sport, even in the traditional countries like France and Italy, and it's almost completely unknown outside of Europe apart from tiny pockets like USA, Colombia or Australia.

      @andrasszabo1570@andrasszabo1570Ай бұрын
    • @@andrasszabo1570It is broken up in TV hours watched and only thing beating it is world cup in football. Its far more than 800 million more like close to 3 billion hours watched. The reason it isnt payed more is really a rudiment of the sport taken off recently in a number of countries. Sponsorships for tdf is way underpriced it will take time to adjust. Cycling is about the only sport where viewers at the event dont pay anything. And it will never work if they would unless its going on in a circuit. It might not be as popular in your country, but its taken off in all of europe, Russia, the middle east, Africa some parts of south america, fairly popular in north america also. Asia is probably the only part of the world where it hasnt taken off. But some of the numbers you put out are very weird. The world cup final is watched by over a billion people actually 1,5 to be exact.And superbowl final is watched by more than 100 million you give them way too low views where do you get those numbers from, they seem completely off. I can tell you personally in my country Almost every household watches at least the last 20-40 minutes of a tdf stage especially the mountain stages or the TTs any stage with significance to the GC. Or at least sees it in highlights in a program after the race. It is another matter with all other cycling races they are not at all as popular. TDF is the event.
