I'd completely finish the chapel and absolutely restore it. That design wasn't meant to be "shabby". It was meant to be complete and vibrant.

A creative day. Annalise doing beautiful hair, new vases, moving light fixtures, Stephanie cooking, Marie cleaning out the refrigerator, the chapel restoration, and a birthday with champagne. ❤❤
I'm with Stephanie on the colours in the chapel. My view is that a restoration of this kind is not only for the eyes of the people looking at it today, but also for those of the people looking at it in 25 or 50 or 100 years. Viewed on that time scale, the colours will start to fade soon enough. In other words, make them as bright as possible now.
Yes. Make them as they were in the beginning. Restore them completely so you can see what the original artists did.
Exactly so! Plus the old paint will wear more than the newer and look more uneven over time. Far better to renew it all at once!
I agree100%. The architecture, the stonework shows the age, so why not make it beautiful as it was intended to be.
Lancelot loves Marie. He seems to spend much of his time around her. I remember when Lancelot was frightened to go outside. When Stephanie and Philip went to S Africa, Marie looked after him. By the time they returned, he was happily trotting around outside. That was Marie who helped him gain his confidence.

Yes and looking at other French chapels on KZhead bright colors were what was used. I like what you are saying. My sister is an artist and I know she wouldn’t want her works to be allowed to get deteriorated in color and detail either
They should make the chapel look like a young adult...still fresh, but not completely wet behind the ears. 😉☺ The restorers are doing a wonderful job already! Please let them know how much we are all enjoying seeing them and their work, and that we appreciate their willingness to do so.

I know lots of people are saying “Make it new” but coming from an art history background... I think it’s important to maintain the original character of the work. To make it new you’ll lose the hand of the original artist and the feel of the history of the chapel. I think taking it to the level of the areas that are in the best condition is a perfect compromise.

I am soooo impressed by Marie's cooking skills and how she handles the stress, time management and even finding the time to take care and play with Lancelot. I wish I would have half of her knowledge and skills. She should make her own cooking channel, calling it Swedish Chef or something like that. Or make cooking courses at lalande. ❤

I can’t imagine how beautiful the chapel will look once it’s done. I do think you should lean toward the side of more restored than less but I understand not wanting it to look like ‘Disneyland’

I found great end of summer sales bargains and cleared a lot of tired and stained bedding and towels. Towels to the animal shelter. Bedding torn up and handed to local mechanics for rags. There is always another life for used fabrics

I think that you should get the Chapel Colours as good as possible. So not quite "fresh and bright" but not frumpy and dumpy because after the cleaning of the surviving areas and having brilliant colours pop -out it would be ashamed to "downplay" the new colours. Plus you want it to look great for a very long time.

Baking tip I learned from a Michelin star chef Fill the mold while it is already in the oven so you don't have to carry it full towards the oven with the risk of spilling

Mmm! Picked beetroot juice! We pickle eggs in ours, so the whites are a lovely pink and they taste delicious.

We would wet our fingers, and spin our fingers around crystal glasses at dinner. Crystal will begin to sing .
I would paint it as it was originally it will age naturally again. The original makers would be delighted for it to be renewed. My grandmother lived in the country on a farm and always wished for newer things today people think shabby things are country style because that is what they have seen it was not the desired thing of country people.

Steph, I'm with you on getting the chapel colors as good and bright as possible. It will last much longer and we will get to see how it looked (as close as possible) to the original vision. As a Floridian who's been to Disney World many times...trust me...there is no fear of that chapel looking like it! Disney castles are artificial.....this chapel was built and designed and being renovated by true artists

Stephanie, I just saw a time lapse video of the restoration of Notre Dame, the work is in its final year, and it was FANTASTIC to see some of techniques you’ve shown us in the chapel and know what the hell they were doing. Macron, like politicians everywhere, has controversies, but for completing the restoration of Notre Dame in just FIVE years France should really give him, and the restoration management team, medals. All the artisans also deserve some sort of lasting tribute. It’s a truly remarkable achievement. And NOW I get to watch and learn about a badly damaged chapel being brought back from the brink step by step. Color me happy!

As an artist, I agree. Restore as close to original as you can. Bring it back to original life :) . And, living in Orlando, I think Disney is fabulous. And I don't think it would look that way. It will reflect the aesthetic of the time in which it was created. Thank you!💖 🎨

Put some hard boiled eggs (shells removed ) in the beetroot juice and leave them for a few days in the refrigerator. You will have beautiful pink eggs you can eat or use in different ways. Pretty presentation on a salad.
Or even gently crack the shells of the hard boiled eggs before putting them in the beetroot juice as when they're taken out and the shells are peeled off, they'll have a beautiful pink marbled look about them.
Thank you for doing the daily updates on the chapel restoration, it is so interesting to see how much care and hard work goes into something like that. Well done everyone!

I think I’d rely on the expertise of the architects and the restorers to sort the paintwork based on your ‘not too bling’ opinion. The job they are doing so far is fabulous and I expect their work to remain so. Your basque cheesecake looked incredible Stephanie. Sushi, toberlone, champagne, risotto and basque cheesecake sounds like a menu I could really get stuck into! ❤❤

I was wondering something similar the other day. What about the floor that needed more support for the walls that it was holding above because the beams were found to be short and not anchored properly (from memory). I may have missed an update? Xx
@rossfamily1184 The hallway floor, rooms, and new bathrooms in the B&B are not talked about much, except that Steven gave Stephanie this week, the new wallpaper designs she was looking for to replace the older ones. These designs almost duplicate the older designs, but Stephanie may change some of the colors.
I would do as much nicely knew looking in the chapel as you can. It was meant to be a grand looking space. All that gold and silver shows how they intended it to be bling. And I agree it will age again, so for future, you'd want to not have to touch up the shabby look again and again.
The folks at Lalacelle vacillated over whether to clean their chateau or not, Terry was inclined towards the aged appearance, but after cleaning a test area they realised it looked so much better freshened up. The original artists and owners weren't aiming for shabby when they did these works - they wanted the vibrancy. Ideally it would have been refreshed and repainted over the years. Managed decay is not honouring the original vision.

Every time you show close-up videos of the chapel, I am in awe. The colors and mix of patterns are just so beautiful. How lucky to get to climb up on the scaffolding and get that view! I think whatever you decide with the level of paint restoration, it will be a good decision. Its going to be lovely!

I understand the dilemma of how far to take the chapel, but I do feel the intent from the original artists was for vibrant glowing colors.
I agree. Originally, the chapel probably looked a bit garish but that was the style of the era (Notre Dame de Paris was the same) but, as you say Stephanie, this renovation is meant to last another 200 yrs so it may be better to err on the site of gaudiness.

At 5:25 you see the top of the bureau is quite scuffed. We have a product in the Us called Old English that comes in a dark tone. You just Polish beautiful scuffed furniture like that and it blends in all the scuffs and makes it look quite beautiful again.
