This entire game needs to be converted to High Def and replayed on TV around the world every year on its anniversary. Ponting Gibbs Smith Hussey Katich plus a great cameo from Boucher...and Bracken the only bowler from both teams that could hold his head high. The rest were absolutely smoked. Easily the greatest ODi ever played and needs to be celebrated.
Bracken but dropped the catch of Gibbs
As a 37 year old man I can proudly say,, Tony greig is the voice of my childhood..

@M No way in hell will soccer become the No 1 sport in Australia. We have a great local competition in Australian rules football and rugby league. l attend both soccer games and AFL games here in Melbourne and we can have 100,000 attend an AFL game at the MCG and the most attendance we have for an A League (soccer) game is around 20,000 for a stadium with a capacity of 32,000 and thats only when the two Melbourne sides play each other. Its funny that the largest crowd Manchester United ever played in front of was at the MCG in Melbourne when they came out here for an exebition match. Cricket isn’t stagnant they are including more nations to competitions all the time such as the Netherlands playing ODIs against New Zealand and England and before that it was Bangladesh, now competing in all forms of the game. The number of nations playing ODIs is over 40 including countries like Canada, Thailand and Nepal. Its not a matter of what game has the biggest following as if they are going to prevent people following other sports there will always be a huge number of cricket supporters. If you think soccer is going to become the No 1 sport in India you are out of your mind.
are you really a old man at 37
Cheers..!! Tony Greig and Michael Holding..
Nobody talks about Graeme Smith’s innings in this match. That innings of his made the whole team believe they can get there! His intent and confidence was amazing!

Agree... I was about to cmnt...
For those of us who watched Makhaya Ntini through his career, we can tell you with absolute confidence that he was man of the match here.🤣 Never in his whole career had he struck a ball with soft hands. Especially in a series decider, with one wicket remaining, and to Brett Lee? Shot of the century! The willow has never been wielded so finely in the history of the game🏏
I believe you.
cannot agree more.
It's his instincts that made him do that, i guess
Now I understood why he was looking very scared in front of Lee. 😂😂
Played it like top order batsman
Before this match, the highest successful chase in ODIs was 332. SA beat that more than 100 runs ! Unbelievable and this still remains the highest chase more than 17 years later.
Sometimes it could be a Sri Lankan chase over 300 runs in 40 overs under the Aravinda de Silva. Runs not sufficient.
This is one of the days I really felt PROUD to be South African 🇿🇦

My father and I had watched this match together. It was March 2006. First we had watched Australia batting and when Australia cross 400 I asked my father that gream Smith might be thinking by how many 100 runs we are going to loose. As we all know Australia was unbeatable, unstoppable, inevitable in those days. My father was just smiling. When Africa score was 3-1, my younger sister and I went to the park. When we return score was 190-1 after 22 overs. We don't have t-20 in those days. It was super exiting for me. And when SA score was 434-9 after 49.4 overs, in my whole lifetime I have never seen my father jumping with joy but on that day he was. And on the second last ball of the inning as Mark Boucher hit the ball for four, 🤩🤩🤩🤗🤗I just can't say. Best cricket match ever ever ever. Though I am an Indian. I read in class 5 at that time and today I am persuing my post graduation.

Easily the best cricket match ever. High scores are common today but if you weren't there to witness this there's just no way to explain how unprecedented this was. Australia's 434 itself was huge, and because of history, absolutely no one actually believed it was possible to chase that score down, except the SA team themselves, and that belief was crucial. Having to conquer a monumental score like that especially in this time period was a huge hit to the morale right from the start which means you've psychologically lost before the innings even began. But the SA team and the hometown crowd believed, there was this air of unrelenting hope and belief throughout and that manifested into them doing the seemingly impossible. The last 10 overs were easily the most riveting and dramatic 10 overs in cricket history.
Australia broke a record and put up the highest ever ODI total on board that day That very same day, the record would be broken, and whoever would've thought?
This match gives everyone hope that nothing is impossible.

This is real cricket. Even Ntini showed his talent. Many times Boucher has salvaged South Africa's ship.
Tony Grieg was everywhere back then ...What a legend
He brought to life some of the most amazing, wondrous and unique moments in cricket history. He was sublime.
He made sure the TV viewers got all the excitement of the stadium by his voice
And now we get -- nawaz what have you done nawaz-- lol from the supposedly top commentator today
Did you even realize that this video was over 35 mins. One of the greatest ODIs of all time..❤️❤️

It's been 18 Years today since this match and South Africa still hold the highest successful run chase to this day!
I still remember this match. I watched the whole match with my brother. Every moment of the match was nail bitting. I was supporting south African team. Still remembering my childhood memory..but those days are gone and never ever come back 😥😥
Yes ❤️
Politics has messed our cricket
Watched this live as a kid. I even used to watch the repeats of this match as a kid. This match is unforgettable. Best part had supported South Africa and they had won.

I was also 12 years. .. It was played on a Sunday I remember the day like it's yesterday what a game of cricket.
Proteas deserved to win the world cup More than any team . Soon they will lift the world cup . All the best proteas ❤️
Tony greig one of the best commentators ever. He made us feel the match like a war..
Makaya Ntini was the real man of the match for not blowing the wicket away when the team was a run behind, and for taking that crucial single when the team absolutely needed it the most, and giving the strike to the non-striker so that he could finish the match off in style 😅😂
as a kiwi. this is why beating either of these two teams is the ultimate feeling. in any sport. amazing people down under. leaders of the world.
It was the summer vacation of 2006. Schools were closed after our annual exams and I was about to start my IX class following that holidays. It was a fuming Sunday of March. Usually in Kerala, the Malayalam tv channels often play popular movies in the sunday evenings in those days. We used to watch that. Being a die hard fan of cricket I had to fight battles with my family to watch live cricket during prime times. When this match began both teams were two all and this series decider was an impressive one. When the Aussies had started hammering the Proteas all around Wanderers I thought , it was a usual business for them to dominate the opposition with mighty runs on the scoreboard. Gilchrist, Catich , Pointing, Hussey and then Symonds had taken the Kangaroos to a dreamy total of 434. So I decided not to watch the chase because the Aussie bowlers were too good for Proteas to hit. So I just changed ESPN to a Malayalam channel and began watching an odd comedy sarcastic program. When the ads came in between the intervels of that show I just flashed over the scoreboard of RSA. After an hour when I came back to Wanderers, Gibbs was hitting the stuff nicely and I thought the game was not yet over. So I forgot the other programs and my family members' wry faces aroused grumblings about my uneven move to stop watching a program in the middle. I had to convince them with the numbers ticking pretty fast in the RSA scoreboard comparing with the mammoth total of Down under after every delivery was given. So when every overs passed by the game had become more scorching and we in exaltation and excitement started applauding when every boundary was hit. It was a game of thrill and agony. We had completely forgotten the movie and everybody in my family stayed before that small TV to witness where the ball is going to hit. The game had all the dramas and exuberance of cricket and it brought even the last man of RSA eleven to bat on. At last when Mark Boucher hit that penultimate ball over mid on to a scintillating boundary, I just bounced myself from the chair and ran out of the home towards our front yard to celebrate it. I couldn't even believe it was really happened though all the news channels (There were only a few, now it's nauseating) flashed the world record chase in there scrolling. That was a wonderful night ❤️❤️ of my teenage. In the next day we friends had most of the time discussing the unbelievable game and victory by South Africa against the mighty Aussies. The game had all the features what it had to be. The two most brilliant hundreds by Pointing (164) and Gibbs (175) Half centuries by Gilchrist, Hussey , Catich, Smith and Boucher Bracken picking 5 wickets in midst of the set back. That poor bowler Mick Lewis conceding 113 runs in 10 overs throwing himself his career away. The support and applause for both the teams from the full crowd. I'm pretty convinced that this history will never repeat for sure..... NB: goodness meet.. my childhood and teenage was awesome....♥️💟 💙💛💚
Your comment is very nicely written. I enjoyed reading it thoroughly.

Greatest ODI match ever in history of cricket what a Chase SA It's 2024 and still 438 stands iconic💯🔥🙌🏻
One of the greatest games ever. In the first 20 overs, they had a score which is an above par score for T20 at many tracks and that too for one wicket only. This was before T20 cricket became the thing it is today and thus it wasn't a norm for players to play like this. Massive respect.
Thank you Shaun Pollock and Glenn McGrath for being injured before this match,so world could see this great show!!!
Hhahaha
😂😂😂😂
Yes, otherwise they would have spoiled it for the batsmen of both sides
Awkward comment 😂😂
Yup.. Aus dont have such a good bowler in this match...I just think about where is glenn McGrath
Just one word- WOW. What a match this was. I keep coming back to this once in a while. I remember watching it live and I could not help screaming in joy...and I'm an Indian. Those were the days when almost everyone who wasn't australian supported the other team because of how aggressive and in-your-face they were - and I was no different. Truly the golden age of SA cricket. You could see when Smith and Gibbs were going great guns, how they started to believe. This was long before t20 and even 10 RPO in the last 10 overs was unimaginable. I only wish they'd see more success in major tourneys. I'm writing this after SA saw a shock exit in the 2022 T20 WC. Hope they win a major tourney soon. You make int'l cricket interesting. Best of luck, guys
sometimes matches becomes classic by commentators. Tony Greig is one of those who made match classics. Cricket world never find any commentator like him.
I had Maths 2B exam the next day. My friend called me through Bsnl landline when SA scored 250 and Gibbs was on fire. I then watched the complete match while preparing for the exam simultaneously. Felt super happy that SA won that day and also I scored 75/75 in my exam. It remains as a wonderful memory of my childhood 😊
