Dead Space Remake: Story and Unitology’s Origins Explained

Dead Space Remake is finally out, and while it mostly follows the original game’s story, there are a few major changes here and there. So, here is the story of Dead Space: Remake, with its changes taken into account and explained.
Dead Space is a space horror story where humans stumble upon an alien civilization called Necromorphs that infest and multiply through human hosts. These aliens are all part of one hive mind that uses a mysterious marker to send signals and hallucinations into its targets in order to spread. While that’s a decent surface level telling of the overall idea, there’s far more to it. From cult-like religious zealots to government interference, and more.
You follow engineer Isaac Clarke and the crew of the USG Kellion as they answer a distress call from the planet cracking USG Ishimura. Planet Cracking ships are run by the CEC corporation in order to gather vital resources for the denizens of Earth and mankind, yet something seems off about this mission. From a distress call to Isaac by his lover Nicole Brennan, to the fact that the mining operations is happening on Aegis VII... a planet deemed out of bounds by EarthGov. What is going on, and how does this all tie into the cult-like religion of Unitology?
Find out all of the lore and backstory to this beloved space horror.

However as taken from the wiki: "Nicole had been dead the entire time and that the woman who spoke to him was actually Elizabeth Cross disguised through a hallucination created by the Marker" This also happens to Dr. Cross she starts to hallucinate as well and see's Isaac in her eyes as her former lover Jacob. Both Jacob and Nicole are dead. Isaac and Dr. Cross are falling under the influence of the marker and hence they see each other as their loved ones never knowing they're actually doing the markers will.

  • I really hope they keep remaking the main line games and make Dead Space 3 amazing, but leave the coop stuff to spin offs. Imagine a spin off coop game where you play as an earth gov spec ops team during the finding of the black marker. I really think they need to branch out the franchise for it to succeed, I'm so worried the remake won't sell well enough for EA to take it seriously. It's such an amazing remake let alone game.

    • @@moonunit7417 Oh for sure, but I disagree about throwing DS3 out completely. Sure the majority of the game and story but I liked the ideas it introduced. And the gameplay, the original vision for it the devs have spoken about sounds awesome. Problem is EA stepped in and said "Less horror, make the coop partner a gruff soldier type and introduce micro transactions" Dead Space 2 despite being a great game did not sell well at all. And from what I'm hearing the DS1 remake hasn't even sold half of what Callisto Protocol did... hopefully a DS2 Remake even gets taken seriously by EA.

I imagine replacing the babies with space dogs and the lame mummy-necromorphs were all EA, but do you really think they told them to assassinate Ellie's character and turn her into a focal point, a damsel in distress, and a human McGuffin? Actually, now that I think about it, they probably did. Still, studio meddling is no excuse. Troika was gutted and forced to release half a game and it is still the best game of all time

  • I’d like the new extended backstory for Isaac Clarke. Because he blamed Nicole for his parents death while on top of that feeling responsible for Nicole’s death it’s going to add on to the amount of guilt he’s going to eventually have to confront in the Dead Space 2 remake just as his previous self did in the original.

  • This did not account the backstory laid out in the books. Dead Space:Martyr is amazing and its main protagonist is Altman himself, the "founder" of the Unitology religion. He is a scientist who was among the forst to research the Black Marker, the first part of the book is literally about its excavation from the Chizculub crater. SPOILERS Altaman was a good guy who did everything they could to stop the Marker and gov coverup. Altman dies in the underwater research facility but is monologued by the main bad guy that he will use Altmans research and discovery for greater purposes. He will make him a literal martyr, against all that Altman wanted. They killed the good guy and used his name to found a bad guy religious cult, with him as their prophet. Everyone only playing the games hates Altman without knowing his tragic story, thinking he was what the Unitologists want you to think.

That said, for all intents and purposes humanity is just another mammal on the planet. What sets us apart is the level of cognition we are capable of. I mean, Monkeys IRL can use tools effectively. That said, on to the fun part of the post! This was the game that made me completely, and utterly terrified of a children's rhyme. I still get a fight or flight response when I hear it, and I played the original Day 1.

  • I've seen a lot of people claim that Dead Space is trying to use the Unitology cult as a comparison with Christianity but even its name in addition to hefty membership payment and its suicide aspects link it more with a combo of Scientology and certain other infamous cults like Jim Jones and his own group's mass-suicide

How could the marker influence him if he has never been anywhere near it until the events of this game. And stop saying the ships name your pronouncing it horrible. U do the entire thing is English then butcher the ships name time and time again.

    • As this is a video on Dead Space 1, I didn’t want to ruin that it’s a hallucination for people who haven’t played Dead Space 2 - as that’s the big reveal at the start of it. I have no idea how you pronounce Ishimura, but I’m definitely pronouncing it correctly.

    • I took it as either he repressed the memory of Nicole's death, or far more likely the marker made him forget AFTER he got there and was close to it
