When Quake Made A Battlefield Game...

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was a well-made and technically impressive sandbox FPS game in the style of Battlefield from 2007, but why does barely anyone remember it today?

    • Me too. Absolutely loved it. Thought it was so immersive, yet really playable and 'gamey'. Maybe too understated for a Quake title, with little gore or spectacular character design. Who knows.

    • "it didn't get the attention it deserved" because it launched at the worst time; just one month before Call of Duty 4, despite both being released by, and under Activision.

  • I feel that it being a Battlefield game with a Quake skin is fitting. You're not playing as a overpowered soldier that's expected to fight hundreds of enemies in labyrinthian maps, you're playing as a normal soldier or expendable Strogg soldier in a giant map with vehicles. This game could do with a new remaster similar to Quake 1 and 2 that polishes up the visuals and animations.

    • Good games, just bad timing and trying to tick too many playerbases boxes. Wolf:ET players were still playing Wolf;ET. BF players played BF. Quake players had their hipster phase and played CoD because they were too grown up for arena shooters or something, I never figured out why those went out of fashion.

  • "Pretty good" is an understatement. This game has amazing offline bots, deployables, vehicles, classes, factions, a very simple/non-intrusive leveling system, is fast paced, has the ability to host your own dedicated servers (unlike many modern games), and just has great map/sound/gameplay design overall. Even if you don't want to try the multiplayer (which is still sometimes alive at certain times of the day in 2024), you should definitely play the campaign twice (one time for each faction), by yourself. It's just a lot of fun, and a decent challenge if you play on the highest difficulty. I think a lot of modern skirmish games are lacking the polish the developers put into ET:QW. Almost a two decade old game and it's still super fun to play both offline and online.

Just bought my own limited collecters edition off of eBay! I knew that the ETQW revival stuff was around, but the nostalgia from being able to have a physical copy of the game and all the bonus goodies that comes with a collectors edition is well worth it to me

That said: there absolutely was advanced movement--strafe jumping as it exists in Quake 2 and 3 was very present, and you could really schmove with the Icarus jetpacks on the Strogg team; something some have likened to skiing a la the Tribes series. (Also the footage you labeled with "Quake 2" is from Quake 1.)

Any time my brother was playing i went to quake wars on my PC. Had some connection issues early on and almost exclusively stayed offline. I loved the turret building, the flying and driving was great, just so many aspects that worked well. class specific side objectives was terrific. The ai was pretty adequate for me at the time as well.
