I Stay In A Prison Hotel! - NOT What I Expected!
The hotel was once a castle almost 1,000 years ago before it was made into Her Majesty's Prison Oxford, which lasted until 1996 when the prison space was converted into a luxury hotel. Some of the hotel suites are named after former prison governors!
I check in for 1 night, Stay in a suite and check out the food!

That one was amazing. One of my favourite videos along with the prison tour you did elsewhere.
3 people in the prison shower cell seems about right.
Damn. Mr. Lowton-Robins was governer for 115 years! :p - Great Video.
do you mean prison shower or prison cell ???
congrats on hitting 400,000 @walkwithmetim
£35 for parking? Are you sure they haven't got the old criminals running the place because that's bloody robbery!
That's the cost in central Oxford. Tim may also have had to pay a ZEZ charge on top of that depending on his car. If Oxford could outlaw cars, they would.
I paid the same in Gothenburg recently for each day. Could be similar price in Oslo now too.
😂😂😂😂👍
Still some criminals operating in there by the sounds of it.
@@frankiefranklin9761 It's not far off in Cambridge either, however we don't have a ZEZ or anything (yet).
Blimey,, what did Thomas Lowton Robins do to be put in prison for 115 years 😮😂
Maybe he couldn't do maths very well like you?
@@studoyle8185 well as tim said 1837 till 1952 maybe he had bad hearing like you .
I'd say he wasn't the type of bloke you'd wouldn't introduce to any of your friends or family. Lol. I guess back in the day, a life sentence, meant that. We have seen a couple of those recently over the few years.
It was 1837 to 1852, Tim said it wrong, I spotted it straight away 😊
Or maybe he accidentally said 19 it’s really not a big deal if tim accidentally said 1952. Simple accident not worth stressing over.
There's an irony here. People are currently paying to stay in a place in which people would risk to break out of decades ago.
Nice one. 😅🎉
Life as we know it. LOL
thanks sherlock
Such an astute observation
@@dogcatdogable No problem, Watson.
I came straight to the comments before continuing just to see how many people were going to comment about Tim saying the date wrong lol.
Just like the 18 year reference
Every time I see Tim come out of a door and walk towards the camera, I think "He must have to place down the camera, walk out the room, then dramatically come back in" Must look so strange from the outside 😂
I think about this too, and the fact he does it so much means he’s constantly putting the camera down, walking away then walking back
He sends out a few cameras to the hotels before he gets there, and asks them to set them up ready for him
‘I get executed by electric chair - I was SHOCKED!’
If this doesn't get top comment, you're robbed! :D
Hahaha brilliant
You bright spark 😂👏
Comedian you are Not .....
😂😂😂😂
Thats so expensive! The bath, not only was it randomly placed, it was also filthy. Lacked atmosphere and so dimly lit. Menu also seemed dire. Anyway Great video and an honest review Tim. Thanks again
Prisons would normally be filthy, and the menu even worse. S'pecially if it's "last orders" . 🥵
I feel like they were trying to do the romantic "bath in the bedroom" thing that a lot of fancier hotels do, but didn't think about the fact that the only space they had to put it wasn't romantic at all and actually just feels awkward and out-of-place
Almost every hostel I've stayed in actually had clean bathtubs and showers (except most Eastern European ones in 1994). Management should offer a discount on check-out for that (or at least a credit voucher for your next stay). £417 per night is $721 Canadian - or the total of what I paid for 3 months of accommodation in India c. 2001!
It sort of shows off the importance of lighting. What once would look stark and bleak (looking down those long wings of cells) now looks architecturally interesting.
Really good that they turned it into something instead of letting the building go. I like it pretty cool.
I wish I could be as open minded as you are. All I can think about is the pain, anguish, evil and danger which once resided there. But wait..that would describe America..sooo
Loved the part where you went out to the yard and worried you were locked out. You have to be the first prison inmate in history to worry about how to get back inside.
You’d think the prison hotel shower would have the soap on the floor as a joke
It’s great that historic building like this are repurposed instead of demolished. It looks like a nice hotel, especially in the governor’s house!
I love the fact that the " ~x of people in the shower" is still used and it now feels a solid staple and _abso must_ in each episode! ✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼
I used to work with some guys who were working there in its last days as a prison. A few had 20+ years service there. Apparently, its really haunted. You could hear noises from empty cells, foot steps on empty wings and bangs when no one was there. The external areas have bodies buried everywhere, and every time any work was undertaken, they found bones. Some really nasty stuff happened there, as it was the old Gaol, that was then extended over the years, to become HMP Oxford. Did you go on the tour? We did a few years back, and it was really interesting. Also, the climb up the castle mound was good. Just a shame the 70's concrete council building spoiled the view. Just down the road is Abingdon Gaol, which is now serviced apartments. Might be worth a visit?
Tim! We had our wedding reception in the Visitors Room and it was awesome, our whole wedding was featured in Rock & Roll Bride magazine!
We don't believe you. Send link for us to confirm
That is pretty awesome!
@@time4advancement244don't be a dick
Sounds amazing, would love to see a link if they have it online too👏🏼
18:20 that's when the hotel comments and says "there wasn't anyone staying beside or above you"
Good one. 😉👻
they were the ghostly sounds of prisoners being dragged out of their cells for their visit to Ole Sparky.
Imagine that😂
The cost to customize the entire building and bring it up to code and poshness; inconceivable. Someone had WAY too much money to burn.
Malmaison is a chain of hotels. I stayed at the Birmingham (West Midlands) one(not a prison hotel) and I expected more to be honest, as its meant to be luxury.
Congrats on 400k subscribers!
Thank you 😊
@@WalkWithMeTim I didn't notice that, well done Tim 👏 👍
This was where Bad Girls was filmed for the first few series. Insane to see it like this.
I remember it Thursdays 9pm on ITV.
I thought it was I was getting larkhall vibes with this video.
@gemmabutler3552 Yeah they used A wing in this hotel. But called it G wing on the show. Epic stuff. They only stopped filming here because they were turning it into this hotel. Then they went over to a purpose built set over in Stratford where the Olympic venues are located now. So it's long gone. But it's nice the real first place still exists in hotel form.
It did look familiar, cheers for that bit of info 😀
My husband and I stayed here for my 50th birthday in a prison deluxe cell - best experience. I joke I spent my 50th in prison😂. Looking at he suite I’m so pleased we didn’t spend the extra. Totally agree the breakfast wasn’t great but enjoyed the evening meal.
Maybe someone will whisper something scary while you're sleeping, like "Britannia Hotels" 😅 Good review as always Tim.
A note about the toilet situation... many older prisons, this looking like one of them to be honest (although yes younger than your previous), there weren't toilets in cells. You had slop buckets to poo and wee in and at meal times would go and toss it down the communal sluice. Very grim and one of the catalysts for the Strangeways riots!
My 4th Grt grandfather was in that prison in the 1790s for STEALING .💰 He escaped after it had been fortified but got caught and was sent to Aus for 7 years.
Great video! Love the slightly panicky "Oh no, can I get back in" @9:34 :)
don't think that phrase was ever in everyday use at one time there.........
When you've got prison at 12 and swimming lessons at 2. Those drawstrings 😂
Very interesting. I think I will skip staying in a prison. Creeps me out, also thinking of all the suffering gone on there. But fantastik job, Kim. Fantastic job. Thank you.
As they say...."if you can't do the time, don't do the crime..."
Think I preferred Bodmin prison especially as I absolutely love Cornwall. You really need to go on the orient express with Gaby and Casper.
me too ;-0)
"I have had better breakfastses" 🤣 You never fail to entertain, Tim. Another great video!
Hehe, yes same here… we giggle at that and a few other little things, love Tim 👍🏻
Here's hoping he doesn't make a Hobbit of it. :)
Pretty sure he said “full English breakfast it is”
@@Lightfur Nope 17:48
@@gazwizzoh yeah haha, missed that.
Congrats on 400k Tim well deserved
10:15 yes they do have lifts in prisons, disabled people go to prison too! also my dad works as a lift engineer and has been to service a prison lift before so I can confirm it exists. but what a cool place to stay
I used to work as a maid in a hotel when I was in school. A scum ring in the bathtub is totally unacceptable. You should have complained and got someone up there to clean it. It makes me wonder what else they're skipping. A bad sign.
I work in the luxury travel industry and the price you paid for half board and room is really quite good. For a unique property with a meal, you could easily pay 600 to 900. Plus parking
Looks like Britannia Hotels has lifted their game with those rooms.
What a great way to repurpose an old building! Love the idea!! Loved it!!
Congratz on 400.000 subs! I discovered your channel lately and I really like the natural, honest approach to every place you visit. 👍
Congratulations on reaching 400k subs Tim ! love the direction the channel is taking and the recent videos have been superb. Interesting to hear what you say about thin hotel walls and noise. I was watching this video in a hotel in Southampton over noisy neighbours so annoying. That dinner looked scrumptious and overall found the hotel to be enticingly bizzare . The suite was a bit of a jumble tbh. Shame about the bath and that room with the table and TV looked oddly misplaced. Would love to visit Oxford so would consider this out of curiosity.
It would have been interesting to have seen one of the old prisoners cell hotel rooms.
French biscuits.. St. Michel.. We have them here in France... Nice hotel.. I would stay in the suites, but would be spooked out to stay in a former cell!!
I love these sorts of vids,Tim. These places do give off uncomfortable vibes, a place of detention and suffering, now a place to stay at your OWN leisure? But fascinating non the less! Thanks for braving this, Tim!
I love the six lockers/kabinets 2:12 . It motivates to organise. Especially useful for a longer stay; and if the person has lots of papers and files.
I live in the city of Oxford about a5 minute walk to the prison from my flat
My husband and I stayed here several years ago and had a ghostly experience! Brilliant place to visit xxx
What was your ghostly experience?
I love that you do not give a candy coated review, but an honest one. You share the details, pros and cons we all want to know.
I've stayed here before. Lovely bedroom me and the gf stayed in and had a few lush cocktails :)
Saw this last Christmas when I visited Oxford. What a mad concept people now paying to stay on what was a prison! Hope you enjoyed Oxford 😁
Huge well done on the 400K Tim. Thanks for staying in and reviewing all these places.
We have stayed in both Bodmin jail, and the malmaison in Oxford. The Bodmin Jail was so much better. We stayed in the main wing in Malmaison the shower pressure was dire, the Bodmin Jail just seemed to do everything a lot better
1:10 1837 to 1952 would be a great length of service😁 great video as always Tim.
Would make him the oldest person to ever live lol
That made me chuckle too ….😂
Can afford to stay in the governors suite now, well done on that mate. The variety of locations and hotels is insane. Keep it up
I loved Bodmin prison , they kept I lot more of the original features but thanks for the tour of Oxford prison 👍Thanks Tim 😊🤗
Great video as always Tim. Ive stayed heer 3 times - once in the same room as you, once in standard room and once in the prison cell rooms. I agree with you, the suite is nice but its laid out in a weird way and its noisy and TBH could be anywhere. The standard rooms are like any hotel and you may as well stay elsewhere in Oxford for a cheaper rate - BUT - I think you missed a trick by not staying in a converted cell!! As you said they took 2/3 cells and combined them to make the room and they really are very good. I remember them being so so quiet because the walls are so thick and the shutters on the windows had been specially made to fit the cell windows!! It was a very funky experience!! Dinner and drinks in the lounge area were good and I thought brekky was fine. Oh and parking anywhere in Oxford is pricy!!!!!
Firstly congratulations on 400k subscribers that’s just amazing. Secondly it’s amazing that people are locked up for years in places like this yearning to get out and now people are paying good money to get in. Still what a vibe though. Something different I guess. The room actually looked really nice more so than you would think. Shame the bath was dirty though. Restaurant looked pretty good too.
Thanks David!
Not Pontins again!. How many months has the judge given you now? 😝.
What a great tour-I love it! Visits like this one keep me coming back time and again.
I love how comforting these videos are even if it’s from an old prison😂🫶🏼
Congrats on 400k subscribers Tim
thank you
Hi Tim I enjoyed ur Norfolk broads mini break it certainly brought memories back to me it was one of my most enjoyable holiday & I went back every year tried different boats the one thing I can say I never ever got fed up with it we had such a brilliant time .
I remember going to Oxford a few years ago and looking inside from the castle tour next door.
A poem about furniture called - The Electric Chair : The jolts, the jerks, the end. Great vid Tim, as ever !
That looks absolutely gorgeous Tim, I’d be happy to stay there although the price is a little above my budget.. watching the vid I came to a combined price of 300. Tap my hat to the guys who the designed the place though. Another great video Tim
Truly ? Are you a closet crime writer ? 😮
Great video Tim. I personally think this was an extortionately expensive stay. I don’t get the bath being in the living room and the fact it was filthy would have put me right off! The breakfast did look disappointing.
Great video. Love all the quirky old places you visit 😊
Something so comforting watching your channel love it .
Are you still there, or did they make a mistake, and let you out again???
🤣🤣🤣
I have only one question: why? Why did anyone think it is a good idea to have such a hotel? Why would anyone want to go there? There are so many lovely places in this world to visit …. prison is not one of those.
Thanks for the tour! I might try it next time I go to Oxford. I love unique hotels. ❤
Have been checking this out so was glad to see your video. Maybe hasn’t inspired me to rush and book …….. Great video as always and you really give good and fair reviews. 😊
Not Pontins again!. How many months has the judge given you now? 😝
I love how they've kept it so realistic! Proper posh shower, lovely bath, plenty of room, satellite TV, big comfy bed, complimentary food and drink...

Great video. The designers have done a superb job there.
I explored this when I was in Oxford very posh! Fun fact: My uncles friend actually owns and designed this building
Did he design the positioning of the bath in the lounge? 😉
@@littlevoice_11 No No he just designed the whole building and how it was going to be payed out
Great video Tim , the dinner menu should have Irish stew and dumplings followed by rice pudding They should discount your bill for good behaviour 😂
Not only do I enjoy the format of your videos, but always enjoy the hotels you choose!! Would love to see some more family content too!
i would love to stay at the famous pentridge prison in Melbourne victoria Australia. they have just made it into a hotel called the interlude. it looks so luxurious and has in the basememt a pool that they put candles around it and you get a private swim experience with a cheese board and wine. very very creepy but would definitely be an experience
How many times can Tim say gutted and or on brand...
Congratulations on your 400k subscribers.
Thank you so much 😀
Great video again Tim, I can't believe Facebook reminded me we stopped in Bodmin jail hotel a year ago today after watch your video there.......maybe we will have to stay here now lol
Glad that you've brought back the "shower capacity" as it were! I've just this evening returned home from Scarborough. Despite the "worst rated" status, your videos on it got me curious enough to spend seven nights in The Grand Hotel. It really wasn't THAT bad, and as I walked around the building, I could smell fresh paint. Always a positive sign!
Oh I do like a prison hotel

Really interesting how popular towel heaters are there! I've never seen one in the US. Here in California the overhead heat lamps in/just outside showers are very popular. When I lived in Canada, the bathrooms often had extra little room heaters you could set on a timer. Very cool how it's different place to place!!
Tim...Your productions "NEVER" disappoint. Thank you for sharing.
I appreciate that!
I think most people would pay good money NOT to see me in the shower !
"All the cells have been converted into luxury rooms" Just like all our other prisons then 😂
yes but the real prisons have French maid service and drugs when needed
I love a Malmaison, I stay at the Leeds one alot and love the food. I think it's a reasonable slightly higher end chain but has it's own features in each place.
I'm pleased your subscription is rising quite quickly now Tim. I have seen some channels that I subscribe to grow very rapidly. Hi yes they do have lifts in modern prisons, the cell with bars before the door, is so door is left open " and prisoner can be observed on a ACCT". 24 hr obbs, for suicide prevention " still the same now in every prison
Enjoyed a different hotel for a change, The suite looked nice and airy. Food looked ok. Thanks for sharing this Tim, take care see you soon 😊xx
The Oxford Castle and Prison museum next door is well worth a visit; they used to provide free access to the museum for hotel guests but I don't think that's true anymore.
Now this is a unusual hotel but also looked quite decent too good to see you staying at some rather unique hotels too , great review as always Tim 👍
