This headlight restoration takes multiple steps to bring them back to their original clarity. This video showcases all the steps from cleaning, wet sanding, compounding, polishing and protecting the headlamps. I've worked on several 996's and they all seem to have faded and cracked headlights after a couple of years. This is my go-to method on making them look nice again!

Hey guys, hope you enjoy this video! Make sure to give it a thumbs up 😁👍 Links to the products are in the description! Next video we will be polishing the paint and deep cleaning the wheels!
hello !!!I have a friend who is very passionate about your work and I would like to know if he could do a 3 month internship with you to learn.
I don't understand why, but this was so therapeutic to watch without the music. Just silence and the sound of work.
Making things better gives you dopamine shot, thats why you feel that way;)
Really
For me,was not.I love working have some music
Easily the best headlight restoration vid on KZhead thanks for the vid..
Thats what i like about youre work man...you put in the effort and you get the results...simply amazing.
Used it for the first time last weekend definitely worth buying if you're a person who likes detailing your own car recommend first time to use on lowest setting 800 so you don't burn paint don't leave in one spot keep moving it over paint easy to use kzhead.infoUgkxfzbDkCRyv3CFXnLZI4APZtRRuG2uRmP2 truck looks like new again used maguires black light battery life like all milwaukee products seem to hold up well 😀
This channel deserves more subscribers. Love the vids man! Great work looking forward to more vids!!
Thank you so much! Glad you like the videos! New video is coming very very soon!
Stunning transformation!
Amazing video! I recently had my headlights restored on my 09 C4S and the results were nowhere near as good. However, nor was the effort as great. My driver side headlight was considerably more compromised from an oxidation standpoint than the passenger and remains still slightly so, even if it is much improved. After viewing these incredible results, i just believe that I can definitely receive better results on the driver headlight from a more dedicated craftsman such as yourself. Thanks again for the eye opening results. With all due respect to the incredibly amazing clarity of those headlight lenses man, no pun intended! Lol! Thanks again my friend.
Amazing content, brotha! 🙏🏽 Keep it up 🔥
Thanks Leonardo! I appreciate you!
Awesome process !!! Thanks for share us your process , Great video 🙏
Thanks Cesar! Hopefully you could pick up something new!
Thank you for the trick of using Dlux on the head lights. I wouldn't have thought about it 😊
I'm glad you could pick up something new! DLUX provides great UV protection!
artisanal quality! congrats!
Great tutorial, good to follow and understand. Thanks.
Great result! Really like the concept of a mini-serie as well! Cheers mate.. 👌

Amazing work man
Thanks for the support buddy!
Absolutely 👍👍👍 supporters from Malaysia 🇲🇾🇲🇾
Greetings from Belgium!
Super tuto 👍
Great video, thank you. Many headlight restoration kits skip the polishing phase and apply clear to a P3000 keyed surface. Assuming this pertains just to clear coat applications and not DLUX? Does DLUX adhere well to the super polished surface? Thank you.
Mano que milagre tu faz! Topzera de mais. Parabéns !
Thank you for your support!

Asmr detailing is dope! Greetings from Greece! 💯
I agree! Greetings from Belgium!
Great job mate!
Thank you Chris! 🙌
Très beau travail, résultats au top, respect a bientôt Fred boniiiiiiiii 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Enjoyed the video, & the rpm of this exact tool requires consistent movement, & speed 1 is optimal to avoid burn marking surface.
Impressionnant ! 👍👌
Came to learn how to clean headlights, stayed for the ASMR effect .
I wouldn’t do ceramic coating for 2 reasons, longevity, and light reflection. A specially designed 2K clear coat for headlight is the way to go.
Very satisfied, i like it.
Two quick questions about the headlight restoration: 1) How many uses (or headlights) do you get out of those Rupes cutting discs before you have to dispose of them? and 2) how do you control the spatter from wet sanding with a DA machine? Or did you not worry about it because you needed to detail the rest of the car anyways?
Good clips and editing! How would you do this if it was glass and not plastic headlights?
Magnifique travail.👍
Thank you! 🙏
I'm impressed, did not know it takes so many steps to restore headlights. Do you think you could do similar job with less steps? If yes which ones would you ommit?
I've worked on several 996's and all of these seem to get heavily 'cracked' and start yellowing after a couple of years. Depending on how good or how bad they are, you might be able to get them looking nice with just polishing. But most of the time the only way to restore them to perfect clarity is by sanding.
This is what I usually do. Although I get down to 400 grit to remove the scratch resistant coating on some makes. I use Koch Chemie H9 as my compound because m105 wasn’t producing clear enough results on even my 2nd or 3rd pass. I use 205 and a rupes wool polishing pad. I finish with Opi-lens.
Sometimes you have to sand it down more, that's true. I've worked on several 996's and this seems to do the trick everytime. Haven't tried any Koch Chemie products, but I do want to try them out soon.
Great channel!
Thank you very much!
Precision work my friend! Looks amazing. Where are you located? Honest to god would bring you my car for a detail.
Thanks Rick! We're located in Belgium.
@@VermijlCarDetail too bad you are not state side.
Thankyou
Great video. What machine speed did you use for the sanding process?
Top video👍🏻 Met het schuren op welke snelheid heb je hem staan? En met het polijsten dezelfde snelheid?
Probably a waste of clay bar in the beginning but in the end great job cus they look brand new and I could see you put some UV protection on it. Top notch 😁👍
Thank you! It could probably do without the claying, but I decided to give them a quick clay because these were heavily contaminated. The less build up of junk in the sanding discs, the better 👍
Joli prochain commande sera CarPro,je trouve les produits bluffant 👌💯
CarPro products are absolutely great!
How long is the process to make 2 headlights like this ? Great job 👍
And so it begins!
You know we are gonna faint dead away when he finishes the paint.
Haha! Next video should be done this weekend!
Impecável !! Ficou novamente novo 😀😀😀😎😎
They turned out amazing!
Excellent work! Although taking off the headlight washer covers, and removing the entire headlight assembly is about a 40 second job on a 996. Could have made your work easier 😉
Thank you! I haven’t figured out how to take off the covers. I tried looking up some videos, but none of them were showing how to do it haha. But I agree, would have made it easier!
@@VermijlCarDetail if you have someone activate the headlight sprayers, you can grab it when it pops up, and use a little pick to pop up the plastic tab
Great job! but why not dry sanding?
Were you using the CarPro Immolube to spray on headlight and then repeat of the polishing process?
Nice 👍🤩🔥
Thank you buddy! ✌️
Loved the video! I performed a restoration on my 996.2 headlights the other day and even after compound and polid I still have, what i believe are, sanding scratches leftover. Would this be from not going to a high enough grain?
Did you solve that issue?
Great job
Thanks for the support as always!
Do you need the soft interface pad?
Trizact P1500 , name brand ? Thank's bro !
Beautiful work - fun (sad) fact: in germany this would not be roadlegal since its forbidden to sand and polish your headlight here.
Nice..👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you! 👍
Bravo
Thank you 🙌
Amazing video! How long does the ceramic coating last? And what is your opinion on applying ppf in the end?
Depends on what coating you are using, look up what your local dealers have. But somewhere between 10,000km-70,000km. If your car has Xenon headlights, it will be better to use a coating that's made for wheels. You can apply the ppf after polishing and then use a ceramic coating on top of the ppf for a better durability.
Great job. I suggest after restoring, instead of using a clear coat, apply a clear paint protection film. Won’t have to worry about UV ever again, plus the added bonus of protecting from stone chips.
Thank you! That would be the best possible protection, indeed! I haven't applied PPF before but I might try it soon!
Nick S it all depends on how much the customer wants to spend.
what clear coat did you use?
🔥🔥🔥
Thanks again for the support Chris!
I feel a bit cheated as we didn't get to hear the 3000 grit disk being removed from the cellophane wrapper, but thanks for including all the scratching sounds from the sanding instead of background music.
Suddenly in the mood for a “runny egg”
You always start with P1500 paper? You dont start with p320 or p400 and then up? And how long the hole process took? AWASOME STUFF MAN! :)
Thank you! In this case starting with P1500 worked out fine. I’ve done several of these and it’s done the job everytime! Sometimes it’s necessary to start with a lower grit, but I don’t ever use anything lower than P600.
Hello! I am interested in getting this done for my car, but doesnt this sanding/polishing remove the UV coating?
Hi! The UV coating was already failing, in order to get it perfect it needs to be sanded. I always apply a ceramic coating which will protect them from UV (which you can see at the end of the video). There are other options available such as PPF, but this will be a bit more expensive.
I don't understand why you don't take the lights out. It's one turn of the screw...
How has it been protecting headlights with coatings? Will it really hold up to the elements for years to come? I’m used to an arosole Can that sprayed a specific headlight coating and that worked really well, but since the one I used has been discontinued I’m in the market for a new one
Depending on what ceramic coating you are using, it may hold up for longer. The one I used holds up for about a year, after that you should reapply the coating.
Vermijl Car Detail ok thanks for the input!👍🏼 I’ll haveto try some this year. I’ll try it on my unkles car
Do you think this also works on stone-chips? Got one thats like 0.5mm deep on the side of the light
I don’t see why not. I’ve seen body shops use 180 grit to sand down damaged headlights/taillights in order to remove scratches from car accidents. It’s just a lot more sanding steps 180, 320, 500, 800, 1000, wet 3000, compound, polish then protect
Great job but it would have taken you less time to remove the headlight than to tape it up. It's quick release on the 996 .15 sec max per side.
No need for UV protection? If the ceramic coating is with UV protection capability, it's life is 2 years right?
I just noticed your channel has 9.11K subscribers and this video is of a 911.
Where I can buy this sandpaper’s? I’m from Portugal
could i move from the P1500 sandpaper straight to polishing?
I wouldn't recommend it, even though some compounds might state they are capable of removing P1500 sanding marks, you'd still have a hard time getting it perfect.
@@VermijlCarDetail thx guy, nice work and nice video!!
What speed did you use the machine, what setting if yo don't know the rpms?'
I use it a speed 6 for sanding and 4,5 for polishing
@@VermijlCarDetail thanks!
brother, can you guest how long headlight stay clear after you give protection?
DLUX gives up to 1 year of protection. They will actually stay clear for longer because they will not turn yellow instantly. In my opinion the best thing to do is to give them a quick polish and reapply DLUX after 12 months.
@@VermijlCarDetail very nice bro
can i use alcohol instead of carpro eraser
Why did you clay the headlights? Great video
Just guessing but probably to get rid of all possible dirt before next steps... But lest's wait for maestro to reply :D
Thanks! Yep basically to get rid of the dirt. There was quite a bit of contamination on these headlights so I decided to give them a quick clay just to prevent excessive build up in the sanding discs. I guess you could do it without claying though.
after what time do you wipe with CarPro Dlux coating?
Let it sit for 1 minute before wiping it off 👍
Do you use just water or soap for sanding?
I use just water 👍
I’ve tried this method and was getting fishhooks in the lens.. little light scratches.. any advice ?
I think you are referring to what’s called pigtails. You need to clean out the sanding pad more often and make sure you cross hatch sand before moving onto the next step
Wow, incredible, but does only a ceramic coating protect the plastic from fading again? I know there are products made especially for headlight to UV protect and stuff, so i'm asking for curiosity, like how long will it last ecc..
Thanks! CARPRO DLUX gives up to 1 year of UV protection. You will have to reapply it after 1 year in order to keep it looking perfect.
@@VermijlCarDetail oh ok, it works on interior too? I mean if you want to apply it to protect the interior from fading is it worth it or there are better options?
@@Meczko I wouldn't use DLUX on interior surfaces, I guess you could but I prefer to use a dressing such as CARPRO Perl.
@@VermijlCarDetail yeah I know Tha carpro pearl is insane, love the matte finish he leaves 😍
hello what company are grinding discs?
Rupes
👍🏻
As a Porsche owner myself would it not of been a lot easier to remove the Headlights?
This is such an ignorant question....when you remove the lights they are unstable and wobble around on a work bench. Leaving them where they are provides a perfect stable platform to work on
Dodge Charger 2006 Belize
Hey vermijl man I do the same thing on my lights an I can’t remove the scratches from the step of my sanding…..???? Help
if it doesn't work with 1000 paper sand use 800 or 600 and upgrade from there: 600 -> 800 -> 1000 -> 2000 -> 3000
@ obrigado Jão
@@manrex5238 No problem mate ;) some headlights can have deeper scratches, if you see it's not working with that sandpaper just use another more aggressive. The important is that you always have to use another to refine, usually, it's double the number when it's more refined at the end, but in the beginning, you can start with 320 for example, then 480, 600, 800, 1000 or 1500, 2000, 3000, and then cutting pad and finishing with gloss pad.
what's the metal bit on the headlight?
The lens washer system...
why not spray on clear coat?? that's what they have, itll last longer than a year
Why clay when you are sanding them?
These were heavily contaminated so I decided to give them a quick clay to prevent the sanding discs from clogging up
Steps... 1: APC (CarPro Multi X) initial detergent clean 2: Fine Clay Bar with CarPro ImmoLube 3: Tape 4: 1500 grit wet sand with orbital 5: 1500 grit wet sand by hand to get hard to reach areas 6: 2000 grit wet sand with orbital 7: 2000 grit wet sand by hand to get hard to reach areas 8: 3000 grit wet sand with orbital 9: 3000 grit wet sand by hand to get hard to reach areas 10: Meguiars Microfiber Cutting Disc with CarPro Clearcut to remove sanding scratches 11: Rupes Yellow Polishing Pad with CarPro (Reflect) Polish to polish the paint 12: Remove the tape 13: Use CarPro Eraser (IPA) to remove compound/polish residue 14: Use CarPro Delux (Wheel and Plastic) Ceramic Coating to protect for 1 year
Great explanation! Well done!
And that will be 100,000$
At what speed is the Rupes?
I had it at 6 for sanding, 4,5 for compounding and polishing
@@VermijlCarDetail any suggestions on how to remove water marks around the engine bay?
@@stanng9246 CARPRO Spotless does a great job at removing water spots. If they are really stubborn and you can't remove them by multiple applications of Spotless, then you can remove them by polishing
