Ariana is a very talented music producer and lyricist. The big pause in the line "I'm hating myself because you don't want to... admit that it hurts you" gets me every time. "I'm hating myself because you don't want to". What a deeply sad, powerful, but ultimately relatable sentiment.

I might be looking at it too deeply, but the separation (pause) can also translate so something else. It makes it work like two sentences in a way. "I'm hating myself because you don't want to..." If you separate it, it's like Ariana is internalizing all the negativity that he feels and thinks surrounding all of this convoluted situation. He doesn't wanna direct any of these negative feelings towards her, but her noticing how much effort this takes, she decides her own negativity to influence her self worth. Then the line "...admit that it hurts you" is like Ariana wanting to push him to admit that this situation is affecting him, but he does not as to not push the narrative that his feelings are a burden to her, since she is already dealing with so much. If you read both of them fluently, in one go, it gives the same meaning but with a different perspective

i lost my ex boyfriend to a drug overdose as well just 3 months after we separated. he was my longest relationship. my first true love. this song hits so hard and its so close to me now because Ari went through the same exact thing. this pain is so horrible and i dont wish it upon anyone but seeing how Ari is thriving just gives me hope that this pain that i'm feeling will pass. thank you Ariana for sharing your music.

I dont know what to name myself it is super sad but it the final part is also imo easily the most beautiful thing she has ever done and maybe some of the most beautiful music i have ever heard. Great art is often made in super tough circumstances and this (sadly) is a perfect example. The harmonising and production is just totally next level (her idol Imogen Heap would be super proud)

Only a few weeks later, she started dating Pete and after a few weeks they got engage. Everything was fine till Ariana found out that Mac died due to a drug overdose. The song helps me have understanding; I'm the Pete and he's the Ari, except these days he can leave me alone so much and just keep me in his phone. Tho we been tied for many lives, it seems he just wants convenient comfort from me and whoever he runs off to, to void fill for who he lost in this life... It's getting easier to fade away from him the more he's silent, much as it hurts. My hat goes to the two for giving forever a shot despite their undealt baggage. Such a beautiful song. And hope they recover well.

I really hope things do get better for you... it kinda proves that we all have unique kind of pains, losses and hurts but that doesn’t necessarily mean one type of pain’s more significant than the other. This song really did help me connect as well mostly at the part ‘ he just comes to visit me every now and then ‘, that’s honestly how it felt when I lost a person that was important to me. You just can’t let them go. It’s going to get better though, don’t let it hold you down and take away all the good stuff. I really hope things get better for all of us and there’s a high chance they will ♥️

A lot of people like to critic Ariana or Pete for their behavior through this relationship. But that's plain simple. They loved each other but Mac's death triggered something. And there was no going back with Mac's death, she couldn't love Pete freely anymore. Love is complicated I wish both of them a lot of happiness.

She really needs to get into some therapy. Theres 100% chance she feels a lot of guilt over Mac's death even though its not warranted. The internet didn't help with that either. if you don't understand this song: basically, she's saying a thank you to pete davidson for his understanding of mac's passing. if you didn't know already, ariana had to break off her engagement with pete because she still loved mac, her ex boyfriend who she still had love for, but he passed. she is saying she knows it breaks his heart when she cries again over mac. but she is also saying that she can't get over mac, therefore she and pete needed to break up, because she knew her truest love was gone.

Saying she broke off an engagement because it wasn't true love because there could only be one, would apply to all future engagements, I'm just saying :/ In truth I think Ariana said in an interview she felt they didn't really know each other too well.

Maybe after mac died she realised she didn't want to be with Pete either way. I don't know how much of a relationship we can see from a few songs but from the outside that's what it looks like

Ariana is a very talented music producer and lyricist. The big pause in the line "I'm hating myself because you don't want to... admit that it hurts you" gets me every time. "I'm hating myself because you don't want to". What a deeply sad, powerful, but ultimately relatable sentiment.
I might be looking at it too deeply, but the separation (pause) can also translate so something else. It makes it work like two sentences in a way. "I'm hating myself because you don't want to..." If you separate it, it's like Ariana is internalizing all the negativity that he feels and thinks surrounding all of this convoluted situation. He doesn't wanna direct any of these negative feelings towards her, but her noticing how much effort this takes, she decides her own negativity to influence her self worth. Then the line "...admit that it hurts you" is like Ariana wanting to push him to admit that this situation is affecting him, but he does not as to not push the narrative that his feelings are a burden to her, since she is already dealing with so much. If you read both of them fluently, in one go, it gives the same meaning but with a different perspective

The song helps me have understanding; I'm the Pete and he's the Ari, except these days he can leave me alone so much and just keep me in his phone. Tho we been tied for many lives, it seems he just wants convenient comfort from me and whoever he runs off to, to void fill for who he lost in this life... It's getting easier to fade away from him the more he's silent, much as it hurts. My hat goes to the two for giving forever a shot despite their undealt baggage. Such a beautiful song. And hope they recover well.

I really hope things do get better for you... it kinda proves that we all have unique kind of pains, losses and hurts but that doesn’t necessarily mean one type of pain’s more significant than the other. This song really did help me connect as well mostly at the part ‘ he just comes to visit me every now and then ‘, that’s honestly how it felt when I lost a person that was important to me. You just can’t let them go. It’s going to get better though, don’t let it hold you down and take away all the good stuff. I really hope things get better for all of us and there’s a high chance they will ♥️

A lot of people like to critic Ariana or Pete for their behavior through this relationship. But that's plain simple. They loved each other but Mac's death triggered something. And there was no going back with Mac's death, she couldn't love Pete freely anymore. Love is complicated I wish both of them a lot of happiness.

"we'll get through this (...) and I love you, we'll get past this" they were maybe having some troubles before. But they were working on it. It's not easy to see the one you love crying for an ex, day and night I imagine. Then again it's just my assumption based on the song.
She really needs to get into some therapy. Theres 100% chance she feels a lot of guilt over Mac's death even though its not warranted. The internet didn't help with that either. They were so vicious to her when Mac died. I know her writing these songs is a form of therapy, but I think she needs someone who is outside looking in.

if you don't understand this song: basically, she's saying a thank you to pete davidson for his understanding of mac's passing. if you didn't know already, ariana had to break off her engagement with pete because she still loved mac, her ex boyfriend who she still had love for, but he passed. she is saying she knows it breaks his heart when she cries again over mac. but she is also saying that she can't get over mac, therefore she and pete needed to break up, because she knew her truest love was gone.
