  • I had the distinct pleasure and honor of being one of the builders who worked on the 100 foot "Sunday Money'' yacht. As a die-hard Earnhardt fan, this was a dream job for sure. It was about 6 weeks away from being delivered when he passed. Dale, Teresa, and young Taylor visited the plant a few times while it was under construction. His boat captain was there most of the time. He was a very nice guy, and funny as hell. Dale was definitely an attention to detail kind of guy and genuinely appreciated quality craftsmanship. I vividly remember walking into work the Monday morning after Daytona. The flagpole just outside the main entrance to the plant was at half-mast. It was somber to say the least.

    • Every Yacht he owned would have been named "Sunday Money" then. Surely if you worked on a new one just before he passed, that's definitely the truth. I've seen pictures and videos of his other yachts', and they were no doubt dated, but it was the era as well.

  • The funniest story I heard about Dale Sr. and the original Sunday Money came from a friend of mine, who has since passed away. He was the assistant boat captain on the yacht of a guy who at the time was the richest lawyer in the US. They are tied up at Chub Cay marina, with all the other big yachts, and they are using the crane to unload two motor scooters they had just bought for the boat. As they are setting the second scooter down, Dale Sr. walks up, in cut off jeans and a tee shirt and starts talking to them about the scooters and what a good idea to have them aboard. The boat captain, a guy named Rocky, obviously doesn't recognize Dale, Sr. Finally, Dale says, "Hey, would you mind if I took one for a test drive?" And, Rocky responds, "I guess. Are you a good driver?" And, Dale says, "Pretty good." At the point my friend could barely keep from laughing. So Rocky starts explaining the controls to Dale, still not knowing who he is, and Dale is soaking up the instruction like the professional driver he is. Finally, he drives off and Rocky turns to my friend and says, "He sounds like he knows what he's doing. I don't think he'll wreck it." My friend couldn't taken it any more and had to say, "You idiot, Rocky. That's Dale Earnhardt." And, Rocky responds, "Oh, okay. Where do you know him from?"

  • The one thing that is on the top of the long list of reasons why I respect Jr is his honesty. He is one of the few well known people who is not going to lie about his faults. He was like this on the racetrack also. If he knew that he caused a wreck, accidentally, he immediately apologized on the radio. During the years that I watched NASCAR every weekend, I think I could count on one hand the amount of other drivers who would do that. Jr is really a class act. This is one of the reasons he was voted the most popular driver for a record setting 15 years in a row (until he retired). Not the only reason, but he is respected!

  • Speaking of vehicles that Dale Sr owned, my brother-in-law is the current owner of the King Air that was Dale Sr’s. The planes current base of operations is a small county airport about an hour north of Knoxville TN. When my brother-in-law and sister purchased it, it still had the DEI logo painted on the tail. Dale Sr must have had some clout. The aircraft registration number ends with DE. I assume for Dale Earnhardt.

Ill be honest though, when it first showed up here a couple years ago i didn't know who's it was but i thought it was a big televangelists or preachers yacht based on the name 🤣

We had two boats while I was growing up. A 26ft Sea Ray cabin cruiser and later a 16ft Chris-Craft runabout. My most vivid memory of the Sea Ray was watching my dad wince every time he put gas in it! • I've always been the same way. I'm pretty much cheap but will splurge on certain things. But it basically comes down to, I ain't paying more than I think something is worth. If the cost doesn't make sense, it doesn't matter how much money you have.

  • Oh God, Dale, if you don’t like wasting money, you gotta be careful w/boats. Talk to someone that has something like what you want - every move you make with a boat costs way more than you think - and it is constant; you pay for a slip every month, have guys pull it out of the water for winter, winterize it, etc, etc. It’s like checks every month just to own it. A house boat has all the potential issues that a house has, a boat has, and a car has, all rolled into one, lol.

    • Are you talking about the sport fishing boat? I remember a approx 55’ Hatteras that was a sport fishing boat that Dale owned back in 1994. He was docked across from us down in Treasure Cay once and that boat was an attention getter.

  • Living in Florida we knew where SR’s home was and Sunday Money was docked behind it along with Taylor’s Toy up on a lift. It became a ritual to go by and see the boats and they were there unused for a couple years. It was strangely sad the day we came by and they were gone.

  • Jr is right about boats. I used to calibrate and service the GRACO 2KS spray paint systems for boat companies. I’d flush and replace the Dose valves, integrators, static mixers, regulators, and calibrated the paint ratios and catalysts. Calibrate the static spray guns. I’d walk around and check out the boats being built and the quality-craftsmanship is just not there. Gaps in the joint fit up, off square, the carpet grain isn’t square. Trim to carpet rolls where the carpet was cut to short or too long. These are $60+ bass boats. Buy a boat that’s ready except for finishing the interior and complete the interior yourself. If you can read a measuring tape, use a square, straight edge, and hook blade for carpet. You’ll save yourself a lot of money and future problems.

  • I have a friend who played professional baseball for several years. Not a huge star, but a solid player. He had the good fortune of playing for the Texas Rangers for a couple years and having Nolan Ryan take him under his wing. He says Nolan saved him by showing him how to save and invest his money in real investments and not fly by night stuff. He also taught him how to think about money. So now he’s in his 40s, is comfortable, and baring a major economic catastrophe, doesn’t have to worry about his boys college etc. On the other hand, he has several stories of teammates who made a lot more money, but are beyond broke. **He says the number one rule is to find a good wife and keep her. He married his high school girlfriend and they are still together after a several decades. I’m not sure if you can count that as good advice or dumb luck.
