For reference, our ears' sensitivity caps out at about 5 kHz and the highest note on a piano is 4.2 kHz. Add in the air-water boundary which is very lossy, and the music sounds to an orca like giraffe sounds sound to us (basically nonexistent).

My admittedly limited impression is that the trainers care deeply about the whales but have extremely divided consciences about what's best for them. On the one hand, the general public learns about orcas and their place in the natural world primarily though these shows. On the other, the trainers work for Sea World and the rest of those corporate theme parks, none of which seem to give a shit about the animals as long as they can make a buck off of them.

I have free dove with them in the wild and they are curious but only to come close to take a look at you. They understand intelligence and empathy and I think they recognize that in us and respect it. The only reason there have been attacks and fatalities in captivity, and always by the same handful of orcas is blatantly obvious. They are locked in prison cells forced to perform every day of their lives. They don’t get a day off EVER and see their trainers as their prison guards. And just like humans, some will just keep their heads down low and make it through, others will be driven to psychosis and act out violently. Look at Keiko, or whatever it’s name was from Free Willy: it was acclimated back into the wild, learned how to hunt just fine, and in the end, it chose people over a whale pod, and decided to stay close to a bay in Norway, where it was very happy with the people around it. They litter their shows in what they say are “facts” and dress everything up really nice to convince people that while it sucks keeping them in captivity, the animals were happy and well taken care of. As an adult, I know now that these were lies to make profit. But they claimed their trainers were marine biologists, that if we wanted to be trainers (which at one point I wanted it more than anything in the world) all we had to do was go to school and we could “join the Shamu family”. Also keep in mind that Sea World’s peek in popularity was in the pre-internet age. There was no KZhead, no Google. All we had were books and what they told us. Compare what Katana did here to what Tilikum did to Brandshaw and then you’ll understand how she’s being meticulously gentle and not trying to hurt him. • Should another Orca, dolphin, or any marine animal be poached every again to be brought into a park? No. But, the problem is that all Orcas in captivity today were never free. They were mated and born in the parks. Which unfortunately makes them much less aggressive than they need to be to survive in the Ocean. If you look it up, you’ll find whales that have been released after being born in parks and they can’t even feed themselves. They swim up to boats and stand their hoping to be hand fed. Released whales have also not been able to merge successfully into a natural Orca pod in the ocean. They’re essentially ending up isolated, not knowing how to hunt or defend themselves, and placing themselves in harms why by swimming to boats whose propellers can slash them. So at this point, it’s already been established no new generation will be born into captivity. As for the ones that remain, the ocean is like even a worse idea than a park. The third possibility are these sanctuaries they’re experimenting with where they place a net extending many miles into the ocean, but still controlled so they can be fed and cared for

  • Many years ago, I got to see orcas in a show. I thought that they were beautiful, majestic and I wanted to learn more about them. Back then, orcas in captivity was something new. We did not know much about them. SeaWorld and others in kind provided the opportunity to learn. We now know that orcas (and other creatures) should not be held captive. Most especially orcas should not be forcefully bred. Perhaps someday, humans might be able to interact with them in their natural habitat, possibly even communicating effectively. I now keep tabs on specific pods that live near the West Coast. Sadly, they are not doing as well as they should be. Humans need to be more mindful and considerate of the Earth's ecosystems so that it remains habitable for all creatures, not only ourselves.

    • If you feel that way, I believe you’re misunderstanding the power structure. The trainers don’t capture whales and bring them in. On the contrary, the only time in captivity an Orca enjoys is when they’re with the trainers because they’re stimulated and playing. Orcas are social, intelligent and look to make emotional connections. The bad part if when the trainer is not there. That’s when the parks hurl them into tiny pools they’ve created to maximize space. In fact, Orcas usually end up loving their trainers and protecting them because they’re the only “good guy” to them.

  • You could be the most experienced, well respected trainer, with 100 years of training under your belt. Once a killer whale decides to turn on you, no amount of training is going to help you.You are then at the mercy of 5-13,000 pound animal. The wild knows no boundaries. Its a killers instinct.

    • A killer whale (who actually was named “whale killer” but some idiot eventually changed it in translation) has NEVER killed a human in the wild, even though many humans have swam with the most wild of Orcas. It’s man’s fault putting them in a obscenely unnatural situation.

  • Dude, the fact that you could be so deluded as to swim underwater with a creature that big and that intelligent just because it "probably" won't decide to kill you astounds me. It's a fucking sea monster and you're imprisoning it in a kiddie pool. You couldn't pay me to take a dip in that tank.

  • That was great!! Whales are probably are upset with their status as prisoners. So, I'd say that makes whale training inherently dangerous. These trainers are intelligent, they are well aware of the risks, so if they want to get in the water, by all means, go for it. But, when shamu kills you in cold blood, go easy on him.
