Date of Filming: 5/9/21
Camera: GoPro Hero 7 Black
Operator: ZSSK Slovakian Railways
Departure: Košice, Slovakia
Arrival: Bratislava, Slovakia
Cost: €23.34 First Class / €18.68 Second Class

    • It's probably one of the most underrated destinations in the world. I couldn't recommend it enough. Košice is a charming medieval town which could keep you busy for at least a day. You could also use it as a base to visit ancient Spiš Castle (you need to take a bus as it isn't really connected by rail, unfortunately) or the Tatra Mountains.

  • 2:09 Fun fact, some Slovak train station have their own "jingles" based on folk songs from that given region. Košice, for instance, has it after the song "Na Košickej Turni" (feel free to correct me...)

  • The red and white pylons are close to the motorway in case the air ambulance is required. Great video, and I am pleased you enjoyed the restaurant car. Great value for money. Another train you could feature some time in the Zemplin motor rail train from Bratislava to Humane. It leaves late evening and gets you into Humane, close to the Ukraine border, and a great tourist area at breakfast time. There are sleeper cars, couchettes and ordinary seating. At present ZSSK offers free transport for Slovak pensioners. We use this service quite often when travelling out east to visit relatives or with my old car. It is all very reasonably priced and saves driving the vast distance. Oh that western Europe would reintroduce the motor rail services that were stopped some five or six years ago, they would make my trips back to UK so much more pleasant.

Sadly our tracks mean they rarely reach that speed, and generally set at 80km/h or lower. The interesting thing is that trains designed as intercity type trains are being used for 800km - 1000km journeys taking around 12 - 15 hours.

    • Hi! I live in Košice, Slovakia (the first city that was mentioned in the video), and I have to say this. Trains are cheap, for students they’re even completely free, but they are always extremely late! 1hr delay is very common on routes between Košice and Bratislava or Košice and Humenné (Eastern Slovakia) and connections rarely wait for each other, so having to sit for 2hrs while waiting for another connection is pretty common as well. So the low prices have their reasoning, if they were higher I think many people would choose bus travel instead because it just wouldn’t be worth it.

  • I get "homesick" for Slovakia. I have been to Slovakia 4 times from 1994, mainly in the east (Prešov, Bardejov, Spišská Nová Ves, Vysoké Tatry), always by train, often by bike. Intense memories of the beautiful landscape and nature; the economic struggle for survival of the population; the long journeys there and back by train! In 1994, cycling through the hilly east: wooden churches near Bardejov; the Bardejov spa Bardejovské kúpele „at the end of the world"; further training for Slovakian German teachers in a remote trade union home (singing slovakian folk songs all night - made a friend there); on the sleeper train Kysak - Prague: the fairy-like High Tatras in the moonlight; scrambled eggs with onions smelling through the whole carriage in the old dining car; the bored female voice for the announcements in Bratislava main station (other journey); crossing the border into the Czech Republic, perceived half asleep - certainly recognisable by the railway carriages now sprinkled with graffiti… last journey was 2015 for a Servas meeting in the High Tatra: much modernisation to be seen (included W-Lan in ICs)

  • Hello, great video of great service in north ŽSR line. I recomend to try south line through Zvolen. This journey takes longer than you have travelled but it is shorter. It is mostly single track, curved railway, trains are hauled by diesel locomotives and from Zvolen by electric ones on the slowest main route in the universe. In some parts you travel as fast as 30 km/h or waiting for other trains. You can't eat in train because restaurant coach does not travel by south and trains are overcrowded because diesel locomotive is too weak to pull longer train to Zvolen. 20 minute delay is first class on these trains, you can delay more than 90 minutes. It is like north is the great cake with chocolate and south is burnt piece of milk and flour.

    • @@NonstopEurotrip Yeah. ZSSK is not as good as people from abroad can think. Everyone use R and IC service of the north line with ETCS or old code system. Southern line depend all of your sight and dead man button. U recomend R 813 Gemeran for this trip. It is the black sheep of trains there. But as compensation, if you love trains, I can only recomend you go through Zvolen - Banská Bystrica - Margecany - Košice. Stunning nature of middle east Slovakia. You will travel on the highest point of normal gauge railways in Slovakia. You will feel pure air of green trees and cold air of deep tunels. Check Telgártsky viadukt, Chmarošský viadukt, Telgártska slučka. You will be amazed.

  • The thing about the name has its origin in history. The category "rychlík" has been introduced a long time before the category Intercity, which has been brought from western Europe. Rychlík is simply every train, which is stopping only in cities or important stations, which differs it from category "osobní vlak" (passenger train literally), which is stopping at every stop on the track. Intercity is like a special service, which is in Czechia (and I think also in Slovakia) not paid by government (unlike the "rychlík" category).

  • Great trip, I just did a tour of Slovakia by trains myself! If you're just doing the scenic Kosice-Zilina part, I'd take RegioJet, especially the astra coach is great comfort compared to these ZSSK rychliks. That said, there's just something magical about travelling in a compartment, so I get people that prefer this as well! As for RegioJet, my advice only counts for their premium seating coaches... I also used the night train's sleeper cabin, and I gotta tell you, they're really bad comfort, especially on the sometimes rough Slovakian rail network... Not very suited for the weak-stomached. If you have time and already did the scenic Kosice-Zilina part, I'd also recommend people to take the southern route from Kosice to Bratislava (via Zvolen), it's really beautiful during the first half as well. And for the real enthusiasts, there is the Horehronec (Margecany-Banska Bystrica) train, which is somewhat in the middle of the two lines geographically. Unfortunately, can only take it from Margecany at 6 in the morning (or starting at 4 in the afternoon without dependable way to get from Banska Bystrica to Bratislava before nightfall), and I missed it because aforementioned Regiojet sleeper had a big delay! Departure times from Banska Bystrica are even worse.
