  • The person who plays the fairy godmother at Disneyland park has worked there forever. She started out as a princess and food handler etc. she has been an employee for so long they hired her as the fairy godmother. Another cast member explained this to my husband while not working.

    • I remember seeing a story that she used to be Aurora, and there was a little girl who frequently visited the parks and Aurora remembered her name. After a while she aged out of doing that particular princess and was assigned to do Fairy Godmother. Years later, the girl visited her as an adult at Disneyworld and they had a happy reunion!

  • Disney doesn’t actually run Tokyo Disney, it’s actually run by The Oriental Land Company. For their face characters they send out cast members from the American parks to keep the character integrity/continuity. (Meeting a face character in the Asian parks, they will pretty much only speak English.) From what I recall, there’s actually only one Fairy Godmother at WDW, (idk about DLR), but that could have changed. What I’m assuming is that they just don’t have cast to send out to Tokyo Disney, and it makes it easier to do her as a masked character. This also makes it so they can have more people able to play her (including local cast) because those characters are done by height only. (I’ve worked for the company, but not specifically entertainment, so this is my best guess based on how I know the company works.)

    • Tokyo Disneyland appears to avoid having Japanese or Asian face characters being the specific characters at all in the parades. For continuity. The face characters are white. And then there's one Middle Eastern, one Asian and one African Disney Princess for example. Where possible, they have Japanese performers in characters that have masks. The rest of the wonderful and talented dancers amd character actors that are Japanese are dancers in the parade - they are either the ensemble / dancers or characters with masks. Given they live there snd Japan is a place that welcomes tourists but not so much immigration, it's easier to have those cast members , as many as possible be Japanese, while still maintaining the continuity of the specific ethnicity of trademarked central characters xxxx

  • I heard it was because for the Western characters in the Disney parks they often have people come in from North America. However for less popular characters like the Fairy Godmother they can’t always get actors to come from abroad to play them. So rather than hiring someone form Tokyo (which honestly would fine) for characters like these they will just give them masks like this.

  • Short Story; In the USA parks there are actually just a few friends of the Fairy godmother. Almost all of them have been in entertainment for a long time, been friends with many other characters and did a lot of backstage stuff. They pretty much help her out on a part time base instead of retirement. The Disney Company actually supplies the character performers for the Japan park. Due to age and other reasons the Fairy godmothers freinds want to stay with their beloved park. At this time making it easier to make the Fairy godmother a fur character in Japan but this could change if they could ever find a freind or two to go over and help her out. • Face characters for the Asian parks are auditioned in Western English-speaking countries (namely US, UK, and Australia), contracted, and sent to Asia. In the case of those parks, performers are tracked for multiple roles (when I worked as a CM, the tracking was something like Cindy/Belle, Aurora/Snow, Pan/Hatter, etc.). With Fairy Godmother, it’s both the singular nature of the character track and unfortunately, ageism. The Japanese parks especially have an aesthetic and older face character performers and performers of color don’t fit into that, unless they are in shows as singers, actors and such. That has changed a little, with Tiana in the Chinese parks, but characters such as Jasmine, and even Pocahontas and Esmeralda are played by performers who are tracked in other princesses.

  • It’s most likely that if it was in Tokyo, that maybe the park would still want the regular Fairy Godmother look like we all see in the movie, and there might not be many people who would look close enough to the character is what I think, or it’s just because they don’t have anyone to do the face character

  • I would say it’s because the kids might get suspicious if they see two different faces on the same character. All Disney Worlds have 4-6 actors usually two stationed on each park then someone to fill in during break and someone to have the other part of the shift

  • Hey, person with special interest in the parks and friends who have worked at them here! The parks in other areas of the world aren't run by the exact same people; for example, Hong Kong is largely run by the government, if I'm remembering it correctly. (52% and 48% joint venture) so each park makes different choices. Another difference I can use Hong Kong as an example for is Mystic Manor to avoid disturbing the culture and using magical items and another Society of Explorers and Adventurers member themed ride instead of another Haunted Mansion with ghost themes. As for the question why, I think some folks might be onto something with the "anti elder abuse" theory, but I might look it up some time! I think it's simply to match the cartoonish face better. They've done it before with characters like Jafar or I guess even Maleficent and Cruella where they'll show up as updated face characters for Sweethearts Night, Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, and Oogie Boogie Bash.

  • Auctions for face characters occur in the US and hired cast members are sent to Tokyo Disney. It’s easy to find a young person to give up everything to move to another country but not as easy to find an older one.

  • In Tokyo Disney they wish to match the aesthetic of the original character. As seen in the classic animated movie. Due to Tokyo Disney wanting to match the aesthetic on the classic character of The Fairy Godmother they had no choice but to use a mask there is not many people who can fit the aesthetic of The Fairy Godmother. So they used a mask to match the character as close as possible.

  • i think it’s because it’s in Tokyo which is in Japan which is in Asia. her face might possibly (in the most respectful way possible) look Asian. the fairy god mother is not Asian is the movie.

  • Yup as a knowledgeable Disney Historian it’s an age thing with Asian culture. Why yess the Oriental land company does run Tokyo Disney plus sea and Hong Kong and Shanghai it is a division of the Walt Disney Company. This is because of Disney was managing the four parks directly it would be a challenge.

  • It was a test to see if that type of character would work. I believe they were having a harder time casting performers for that character. It would be easier to find anyone the same height as the fairy godmother, it’s a little more challenging to find a face lookalike.

  • I've got a question of my own: When the "friends" of the Disney characters gather backstage to end their shift, do they talk about the guests that the characters have met? That is, would the Princesses from Princess Fairytale Hall at the Magic Kingdom share their guest experiences with each other and how they made their day magical?
