  • My mom was a big fan, she died same day as Leonard. That was her kind of humor. So.. we played this song for her last farewell.

    • Agreed. I could always relate to him because I feel the same way...a tortured soul.... I am a very reflective person, an idealist which makes it hard for me to be in this place call life..the planet.. Years ago I watched his DVD in Tibet, must have watched it 20+ times trying to gain understanding.. I often revisit his clips on his honest dialog about living with depression ... I trust that death is easier than living... living is hard.... Hope he is resting...

    • Exactly. Cohen didn't have best voice ever. His voice was very imperfect. But he was singing really emotionally and deep - that made awesome effect! In my opinion - there is no cover better than that song, even if cover is sung technically better! :D

    • There are very few male vocalists who can give me goosebumps not to mention tears to my eyes. That in my opinion is the mark of a true singer. What one must do is determine for oneself what constitutes a "good voice". It's not just technical ability, it is primarily where that voice is coming from.

  • When I heard that he was going on his “final tour” (ha ha) I got myself to Copenhagen. I even booked into the same hotel as his party. And one morning there he was sharing a coffee with his colleague. I rushed out to the nearest bookshop to get a copy of his latest book. As it happened there was a long line of people waiting to pay for their books (not Cohen’s). I was worried I would miss out on getting him to sign (back at the hotel). I yelled out “Excuse me, I need to get this book back for Leonard Cohen to sign”. Well, the crowd moved aside and applauded. They all loved Cohen. Most were in their 30s. I finally got back and sheepishly approached him. (My partner had already scalded me for invading his privacy). I apologised and introduced myself, explaining I had travelled from Sydney to be at his concert. I asked if he would sign the book for my daughter who was also a fan. THIS IS WHERE THE REAL COHEN SURFACED. He softly asked the name of my daughter. Then he took the book and settled it on the table, smoothing its pages flat. Slowly, he reached into his jacket for his fountain pen. Removing the cap, he looked up with a smile and asked the name of my daughter. He spelt it out to me to make sure. Then he commenced the artwork. He didn’t just write, he drew. The drawing was words but the art was in how he did it. You see, some art is not captured on paper or sculptures, or even performed. It is simply how you live. He gave me a spirit.

  • “ You see, I used to live alone before I knew you.” Even though I was raised to believe in God, I always had times in my life where I felt so alone. Then in 2003 at the time the war in Iraq began, I heard a sermon that finally took my heart and melded it with God. I finally recognized that I was never alone, at 44 I became fully born again. This verse of the song always brings tears to my eyes, along with the image of David writing Hallelujah’s, one of the most powerful words ever written. Praise Ja all you people.

I believe most of those performers don't understand the real meaning. Leonard said this isn't a joyful song, but it comes from a sadder place with a certain amount of resilience to still rejoice even when the spirit is broken.

So long, Leonard.

  • Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a song full of depth and ambiguity. With poetic metaphors, it explores the complexity of love and being human. It explores the highs and lows of interpersonal relationships. Romance and passion go hand in hand with disappointment and loss. Spiritual and biblical motifs reflect the search for meaning and transcendence. "Hallelujah" is an ode to the contradictory nature of our feelings - joy and pain, ecstasy and doubt. Cohen looks compassionately at our longings and our vulnerability. The song is an appeal to embrace life in all its facets. He invites us to face the darkness and yet sing of the light. From loss can come gratitude, from doubt can be born faith. The timeless resonance of "Hallelujah" lies in this multi-layered message. Every person can find something of their own in it, draw comfort and hope. A moving hymn to the beauty and pain of being human
