One tip that should be noted. Painting a door in full sun even if its flat can leave brush marks, as the paint will start set before it has a chance to flow out. If you must, keep the door in a shaded spot until ready to start painting.

I always use brush for trim & divots and roller for the flat work always turns out nice. Recently I sprayed all my 8 exterior doors with an airless & came out awesome
Do you think it leaves a better finish? Do you typically use foam rollers to leave the best finish when rolling?

I forgot to mention....consider getting your jamb cladded with aluminum and caulked to the brick or siding....from a professional...it will make the project look GREAT!!
lol hit the door with a 3/4 roller for a smooth finish the cutting is good and well used brush but a roller will be a smoother outcome for a great finish

I have a door like that but the window grids are between the glass. I'm painting the door red but wondering if I should paint the outer window trim red, also, even though the grids have to stay white?
i make sure i get a little paint on the windows because sometimes corners are missed, and its easy to scraoe off.
I have to paint my front interior metal door again. It's already store bought white so this is the first time I would do it. Would I need to sand it all first? And would I need primer or a top coat if I'm just painting it white again? The paint I got already has primer but I doubt I even need it, at least not a separate primer in addition to the one already in the paint. It's semigloss exterior paint so I probably won't need some sort of top coat. Didn't purchase Floetrol or anything either. Not sure how I'd even use it or if necessary.

Thanks Chris Adrian for your questions. Yes, priming is a must to make sure the topcoat will adhere. Scrape any loose paint (wear a respirator) and sand down any rusty areas before priming. You can hand sand or use a random orbital sander (set on a low setting then move up to aggressive based on needs). Hope this helps.
Should the door be primed first?
It's a lot easier with no paint on the brush.--If it's a warm day, I wouldn't do all the panels until I've done the rails and stiles up to them, so that the paint can still be feathered in.--If the door is a different color than the interior trim (assuming like most doors it opens in) you want to paint the hinge side the door color and the knob side the interior trim color.-Also, I,m still a believer in oil-base for doors and trim- using Penetrol.

I'm sorry I think I missed the most important thing. Do you paint the exterior including the edges or you just paint the front.
Why use such a small detail brush instead of a small roller ?...Save the little brush for the window mullion.....A 6 inch roller would leave a smooth even texture.....Every time....

I would only paint a vertical door, as I have been trained.
IMHO. Paint lines will be seen. Airless spray painting (rent or buy) is the ONLY way to go. The front door is THE most visible thing someone sees as they approach your house. Why skimp?
Why paint white door white? Better to give it some new color.
It’s a cream color
all you have to do is scrap it with a razor slowly and was window down with Windex clear.
