It’s one thing when you join the military knowing that you might have to use this in war one day but maybe not versus you know there’s a war already going on and you’re being trained to go back and immediately engage in warfare makes you want to pay real close attention to every detail

      @SVSky@SVSky Жыл бұрын
    • @@SVSky time and time again I hear that Ukrainian troops are extremely motivated to learn as much as they can. The other side doesn’t seem to have the same motivation to train their troops… These Challengers, Leopards, Abrams, etc., are going to make it very difficult for Russia when combined with infantry and artillery also trained by the west. I’m proud Australia is helping with trainers and has supplied many protected mobility vehicles. I’d don’t see a need for our 50+ Abrams M1A1 MBTs either, I think we should be handing them over to Ukraine too, especially considering the planned purchase of M1A2s for The Australian Army(which we also don’t need; ships, submarines, aircraft, missiles and other ammunition are what we need right now!).

  • I mean, you know, we've been tuning in to The Sun's vivid portrayals of modern-day war in the Ukraine and it must make the British people terribly proud to see that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson's declaration on the streets of Kiev in the early days of the conflict to President Zelensky rings true to today and that is that the UK would stand with the Ukrainian people for as long as it takes to win the war. Johnson has shown to the Ukrainians and its adversaries and its allies that Great Britain is true to its word. One's word is worth more than all the gold in the world to someone whose country has been going up in flames. Now the Ukrainians can see another chapter unfolding as Britain's pride of the battlefield, its legendary Challenger tanks, are now cruising down bomb-cratered side roads and scorched farmlands and destroyed cities attacking enemy fighting and artillery positions with the most advanced and powerful weapons that exist. The Ukraine is getting its promised modern armor and the tens of thousands of British-trained and NATO countries' trained soldiers are now a formidable force to be reckoned with on the front lines of a war that all of us know is going to end one day, but we also know that it might be the beginning of the war that ends all wars if Putin goes mad and flies over the coocoo’s nest...

  • I'm pretty old now but many years ago (80's) when I first started out as an engineer I trained as an apprentice at RARDE in Chertsey / Chobham where Chobham Armour got its common name. I remember all manner of test rigs there for the Challenger 2, much of it too secret for my restriction level lol. The highlight of my time there was getting taken out in the Challenger 2 round the testing tracks on the other side of the M3. If you've ever driven from the M25 junction down towards Bagshot in Surrey you may have spotted the facility which has changed name and purposes over the years. At the time the fire system was like something out of a sci-fi film, the way it could remain perfectly stable and track a target once acquired. No matter how the tank was driven that barrel remained locked onto the poor sod on the other end. The HESH ammunition it fires will absolutely devastate T72 crew. The only Challenger 2 ever killed in action was taken out by a friendly fire incident using a single HESH round. The Challenger may lack the power of some of the other NATO tank gun but that HESH round can kill at as much as 5km. They won't even see what kills them. The fire control system will put a HESH round right on a T72 while moving and there will be nothing the Russians can do about it. They are not invincible of course but when they play to their strengths I suspect Russian tank commanders will avoid engaging them at all costs.

I have seen evidence that lighter western fighting vehicles like the M-113 and up armored Hummvees are in use. I think everyone that is on the side of Ukraine is waiting anxiously to see the effect these western main battle tanks will have. My personal belief is that even though the Abrams have already been delivered to Europe they may be the last tanks to enter combat with the leopards most likely being the first.
