  • The reference to her mother was due to Suzannes’s very bad reputation for tricks and poor sportsmanship. She fired Surya’s coach appointed herself coach and would tell Surya to throw in backflips during the warm up against other skaters, one time almost making Midori Ito crash.Suzanne was a sick and abusive woman who adopted Surya and enslaved her for her natural athletic talent to gain fame and money. Luckily Surya became an adult and emancipated herself from this sick demented Racist woman and moved across the world to Las Vegas. Surya fell in love and is married and coaching kids now happy and free.

They gave her a chance to explain in her own words. But you can also understand Surya's side - her English at the time was not great, but also she would have very conflicting emotions and be flustered in saying basically that she wanted to stand up for herself as she didn't feel anyone else was going to but at the same time didn't want to get in trouble for saying the judges were wrong. • It's a shame, but if Surya Bonaly was going to bring forth something and protest, it should have been the year before at the 93 World's. Such disgusting, tragic judging and conniving corruption at that event denying Ms. Bonaly the title and what she achieved. But this year 94, it wasn't even close due to Bonaly's errors and less smooth Four Seasons compared to her best-ever and complete performance in 93. It's still baffling that the ordinals was 5 to 4. However, she really was the 1993 World Champion and was denied that truth. This protest was quite the shocking moment back then, and it was quite a way to end the strange, controversial and tense 93-94 figure skating season. It's always interesting that in this American network coverage, during the medal ceremony and Bonaly's protest, Kurt Browning (from Canada) stated that perhaps it's her mother playing a role in the protest. That was not surprising from him because Kurt was just newly retired from amateurs and the skating world and community know about things and ways of people in the skating world, including Surya's mother and her eccentric ways. For those not familiar, you could look it up about some of the things Surya's mother did or said which affected Surya's career.

    @alexsdb9712@alexsdb97123 ай бұрын
  • I can only wonder if Surya’s mother put her up to this. I cannot relate to her, personally, but I truly believe that Sato was better on this day and deserved the gold over Bonaly. If Sato had made a couple of mistakes, then I could see the controversy, especially with this taking place in Japan. That wasn’t the case, though… I definitely sympathize with the media ambush, if nothing else. She needed to get outta there. That was painful to watch.

  • Sad that those other two women had their moment stolen from them. the day she threw the flowers back at them she was all done in my eyes. That's such poor sportsmanship. Rules & standards of figure skating are very conservative. Everyone knows this when they join the sport. Those that have tried to sculpt those rules & standards have been ready to accept the grades accordingly. That's GOOD sportsmanship. Thats having the courage of your convictions. Look at how many yrs Elvis Stoyko accepted lower grades for going rogue. He knew what he was up against & he took it like a man. Surya was very strong in some areas (amazingly so) but she was lacking in others. She wanted to try to re-sculpt the grading/standards to reflect her personal talents & downplay her weaker ones. That was just not going to wash. How could she expect credit for moves that are not even legal in her chosen sport?

Reread what I said...it's a very conservative sport by way of rules and standards. They do not change those to suit individual skaters & probably never will to any great extent. She knew that when she went from being a gymnast into figure skating.

    • @@eyezbaby1 Well, I agree w/you on some issues & not on others, my friend. I think if they judged her on her appearance she would have been rated higher, not lower. She was a young, healthy, pretty young woman. And at the time she did the back flips, I don't think any skater of any color would have found it accepted. It was illegal, and the judges are very stiff in figure skating...gotten somewhat better since. But she knew the score when she started, and if she wanted to try to change things that was her right, but also their right to stay firm, and move slowly. I will probably always feel badly that she took moments away from other skaters that had waited & worked for for years. Their parents sacrificed like her's did. She had to know how many innocent people got hurt when she made things all about herself. That to me is not good sportsmanship. I liked her, recognized her strengths, but I could have respected her more.

    • theresa bollman I agree with you. I think Surya displayed poor sportsmanship when she refused to stand on the podium and wear her silver medal. When Yuna Kim should've won Olympic Gold and lost to Adelina Sotnikova in 2014, she didn't treat Adelina rudely. She took second place and accepted the medal without any complaints. The only thing she said was that there were times that she didn't understand the results she got, and this time was no different. Surya's behaviour was truly shocking to me because I've never seen a figure skater behave that way (aside from Evgeni Plushenko crossing over the first place podium in Vancouver to the second place). I also understand the criticisms regarding her skating skills and artistry on ice. Figure skating is both an art and a sport. Thus, it's not only about jumps and spins. If figure skating was only about jumps and spins, then there wouldn't be a need for any music or choreographers to design programs for skaters.

  • No, I don't think she was a "terrible skater" but I dont think her best bet was Figure Skating. There is a natural and delicate grace needed for some parts of it and she just did not possess that quality. They say she did try for a while to try to develope some of that, but could not master is. It really has to be God-given, I think. That's when she went all out trying to be "GYMNAST ON ICE" but that's a no no in figure skating. Some of the more successful, graceful female skaters tried to tell her "Figure Skating is more than just jumps" but she was intent on making the sport change to suit her needs. She shamed herself one too many times when she failed. They say her mother is the culprit. Maybe so, I can't say. But to deprive other women of their well earned moment in the spotlight (and their families as well) was very, very selfish.
