Making the 10-Minute Slipcase // Adventures in Bookbinding
This video demonstrates a simple and functional 10-minute slipcase.
My advice on how to measure the width of the book is not perfect. For most books with a rounded spine, measure the width from the fore-edge side of the boards to the shoulder of the book, not the outside of the spine. If it is a square-back books it's much the same thing. But for a rounded book if you go to the outside of the spine the slip case will extend past the shoulder and be unsupported by the book and likely to get damaged.

Thank you for this tutorial and PDF. I managed to create 2 slipcases for 2 A6 sized books with cardstocks that are slightly lower than 240gsm, so it is not as sturdy.

Fascinated by T.E. Lawrence as a kid and lived in Israel for 4 years as a teenager. Sadly too young to drive and border politics got in the way! Great to see anyhow.
Great video and very useful. I had a go last weekend (far longer than 10 minutes of course!). But I think I got the measuring amiss. I measured the full width of the book, rather than, what I think I should have done, is measure to the edge of the spine (shoulder is it?), so the curve of the spine sits outside the slipcase. I’ll know better next time! Thanks again for all your wonderful videos!

10 minutes, 20 minutes, somebody's got a loose sense of time ^_^ I have a few of these on some of my Japanese books, it seems to be a standard thing for their textbooks and reference books. I don't have need for this now, but future-me does, thank you.

What GSM would you recommend as a minimum for these covers? Your tutorials are so much appreciated!
The red one was a heavy paper, maybe 240gsm. I wouldn't go any lighter than that. The other is 12 point card. All the best, Darryn
Is there a disadvantage to glueing the slipcase from two parts, i.e. using adhesive along all three edges of the book? I have some heavy paper (250-300 g/m^3) that might work; larger sheets of manila is more difficult to find locally. 🤔 Also, would it be an idea to support the heavy text block in a larger book by adding a piece of board, to fit between the covers, to the bottom inside of the case )or to the shoe you demonstrate in another video)? Or is another type of enclosure better if one is worried about sagging pages?

Hi there. What's the minimum gsm for the card stock?
I'm not a paper expert, but I thought it was 10pt or 300gsm. But I just check a supplier catalogue and they had 240gsm material in their card section. DAS

Do slipcases like this protect books from oxidation, or aging?
Yes, very well. This is known as making a micro-climate for the book. The phase case is even better and I have a video on making these too.

I can make one in 10 minutes but the book doesn’t fit.
