Did a real creature inspire the myth of the Kraken, one of the greatest sea monsters of all time?
Hundreds of years ago, our ancestors believed that a gigantic sea monster swam in the world’s oceans - the mighty Kraken. This huge sea beast was said to devour men and sink ships that sailed too close. Investigator biologist Charles Paxton is on the hunt for this terrifying monster of the deep. Did a real sea creature like the giant squid inspire these tales of the Kraken and why do the descriptions of this monster vary so much? The quest to find the Kraken explores our primal fear of the unknown - could the origins of the Kraken myth be a coded warning?
For thousands of years, civilisations believed in mythical beasts - Dragons, Cyclops, Giants, Vampires and Sea Monsters. They still fascinate us today, but where did the stories of these fabled creatures come from? How much truth lies behind the legends, and what can these myths tell us about the medieval and ancient people that created in them? This series combines action-packed location filming and computer-generated animation, with experts in archaeology and palaeontology, to unearth the secrets behind some of the most famous and terrifying mythical beasts.
