NZ has a classic Autumn sou-wester today and this eases into Friday and the weekend.
Next week low pressure forms north of NZ and this area of low pressure has connections with the equator part of the world - which gives this area of low pressure some extra energy to form. We are not forecasting a storm or severe weather event - simply a large area of low pressure that - coupled with nearby high pressure - may well create some windier easterly quarter winds for northern NZ next week and perhaps some wet weather too.
But the main feature for the first HALF of this month will be a powerful block of high pressure stuck over Tasmania region and influencing the weather right across the Tasman Sea.
Forget all the TV weather. Phil is bang on with weather predictions.

the South Pacific Ocean near Great Barrier Island island, New Zealand, in the morning of Thursday, May 2, 2024 at 9.57 am local time (Pacific/Auckland GMT +12). The quake had a moderate depth of 106 km (66 mi) and was not felt (or at least not reported so).

Phil, I live in England I have noticed your high pressures in New Zealand the winds travel in an anti-clockwise direction yet here in England they go clockwise, and vice versa with the lows clockwise why is that? I used to live in Auckland and never got around to understanding it.
