Not only does it not introduce more problems, but it solves SO many problems that most people face and it gives you back so much free time to solve the hard problems that money can't solve. So while money doesn't solve all your problems, it does finally give you the time and energy to tackle them because you don't have to worry about money and all the problems that come from not having enough money, which are a huge drain on your time and mental and emotional energy.

  • On your point about charitable giving of billionaires, one point that I don't think is talked about enough is that the existence of billionaires (and their charitable giving) completely undermines democracy. An organisation like the Gates Foundation has more money than some countries, and two people (Bill and Melinda Gates) get to decide what to do with it, what problems are most important to solve, and who to give it to. In this way, they have more power than some governments. In a global democracy, the same billionaires would be taxed appropriately and their wealth redirected to democratically elected governments who then can decide (with the consent of the electorate) what that money is spent on and what those priorities should be. I know this is a bit of an idealised alternative scenario, but I think the fact that some wealthy individuals have more influence on the state of the world than whole countries is absolutely terrifying.

  • in the early 2000s, my cousin won almost 20 mil in his state off of a powerball ticket. i am not really close with him (and was a baby when he won), so I'm not really sure how his life was before the money. but he had just had twin sons a few months before and was living in a not-so-prime neighborhood. he had two more kids, put them in private school, bought a mansion, provided for his parents/siblings, went on all the vacations, etc. he did eventually open two restaurants with some partners, but he paid for way more than his fair share and was taken advantage of. the money has dried up for the most part now, and now he's divorced, selling the house, and still has to put his kids through college. it's just interesting to have this all happen to someone in the family circle. hearing about the vacations slowly lessening each year , hearing about the new, smaller house they have their sights on , hearing from his parents about how his marriage failed because "they didn't have enough time together before the money". I think they'll remain comfortable for the rest of their life, but it's just been sad to see from a distance.

Though the other side of that story is that my mom was addicted to scratch offs and would routinely buy them by the book (the entire roll the store puts in the display case). My childhood was filled with trips to 711 where I’d be sitting in the car where my mom would buy scratchers, do them in the car, go cash them in to buy more, rinse and repeat. When she passed away we found about six duffle bags worth of used scratch offs she would hide all over the place because she didn’t want us seeing them in the trash. So…..the odds were in her favor 😂 Every now and then I’ll see a lotto machine and throw a buck at it for a laugh. • OK so I had this genius idea in college that I wrote a paper on, and this video comments section feels like the right place to share it because....y'all will appreciate it....it's relevant I swear!!! Basically, my proposal was that, in order to incentivize voter turnout, states should enter voters into a state-run lottery when they vote of only voters. After the election, one voter will win a couple million dollars. My argument hinged on the idea that (combined with making election day a national holiday), it would disproportionately incentivize low income voters, who are historically underrepresented at the voting booth (often because it's not financially feasible for them to skip work to vote). You know, might help even the playing field. And the rich folks wouldn't care as much but like, who cares about them, they already show up to vote! And it would be cheap, easy, and make people excited about elections, you know, add some real SHOWBIZ to the affair, gamify the elections a little. Anyways, I bring this up because, I had no idea when I wrote that paper that low income people spend proportionately more on lottery tickets than higher income people, but it totally makes sense, and it would've been the PERFECT argument for my paper like 10 years ago. And then I was like "I feel like Tiffany and her comments section would enjoy my novel idea about combining lotteries with increasing voter turnout". Maybe you did.

  • One tip that responsible lottery organizers (not in France but elsewhere in the EU) have is to admit to winning, but lie about the amount. If you say that you won 100k or 200k, that's still a huge amount that you can buy a few nice things with and you can say you're investing the rest (whether or not you actually do that). The hope after buying a ticket is real. It's how they get you... sometimes I need a bit of hope, though, and if I can spare a few bucks, I buy some hope with it.

Even with the anonymity and the help provided by the FDJ, there are stories about the "downfall" of some winners. I don't know if they are more prevalent than in other countries though. My husband would set his twin sister and their mom up with a house and vehicle and we'd start a college fund for the kids. We would want to invest some for our retirement, but we'd also have talked about opening a charity for middle income people that are often smashed into the cracks of society. They don't get food stamp help, healthcare breaks, tax breaks, etc. Too poor to survive but too rich to get social support - those are the people we'd want to help.

  • I think lottery winners should definitely consult financial advisors and look into ethical investing that will pay them dividends over time. I don't say this because I believe people need to necessarily hoard or accumulate even more wealth even when they have more than they can spend; I say this because oftentimes those who win the lottery simply don't know how to manage their money so as to hold onto it and enable it to last long term. Financial advisors and wise investments can help them with that, and in turn, they'll be able to live comfortably and help those they love as well as strangers for much longer - ideally their whole lives.

  • It is mathematically ridiculous to buy more than one ticket in an open-ended draw, it does not increase your chances of winning whatsoever. The only time buying more than one ticket increases your chances of winning is when there's a set number of tickets to be sold. Buying 500 Powerball/649/etc tickets is not going to increase your chances of winning. The only "lottery" I participate in is a provincial fireman's 50/50 raffle, I buy one ticket a month for $5. The pot usually hits 300K so someone takes home 150K, and the firemen get 150K. I feel like that's a manageable amount of money to win, you're not going to go insane with millions but it's going to help you out quite a bit. I do already know what I'll do with the money if I win lmfao, but I'm not counting on it or obsessed with it.

The bigger your X the greater your odds are of any your X being equal to the 1 they draw of the N possibilities. 10 tickets bought is 10 times the chance of you winning.

    • There’s not a set number of tickets sold, but there is a set number of number combinations. So for example, imagine there were 10 slips of paper with numbers 1-10 written on each one. Any number of people can buy tickets for this lottery. If you buy 1 ticket with 1 number on it, you have a 1/10 chance of winning. If you bought 10 tickets, though, with one of each of the numbers, you would have a 100% chance of winning. However, the more people play, the more likely you are to share the prize. Finally, if you bought 9 tickets with the same number on it and that number is pulled, you will benefit if someone else also chosen as the winner with only 1 ticket. You will get 9/10 of the prize, and the other person will get 1/10 of the prize.

  • I like your take on the Billionaire's club. There really is a mind set from people who have money or have power that looks down on others not from the same background as them. You can have all the money you like but if you are working class poor you are just working class poor with a lot of money. Condescension. What I noticed when working in a profession that is high paying is the contempt that many in this profession had towards people who were poor or just not successful. It is pretty creepy, and makes your skin crawl just listening to how they talk and look down on others who do not meet expectations. Regardless of how much money the person viewed contemptuously has come into.

  • Ooh ooh I would love to hear you talk more about the nonprofit industrial complex.... I used to work for a nonprofit and the entire sector is notorious for burning its workers out. The nonprofit I used to work for has had SIX executive directors in the 8 years I've had connections there... And because of this, the org at large never makes an progress, and each new generation of leadership repeats the same mistakes over and over and over. People always leave in complete distress and don't stick around to pass on their wisdom to their successors. But on a more macro level, nonprofits play a KEY role in capitalism at large, namely they exist to help the wealthy feel less guilty about their wealth. Which means at the end of the day, regardless of who the org claims to serve, their ultimate client is the millionaire who will donate enough to keep their doors open for another fiscal year. Of course, I'm talking about nonprofits that were created by normal folks like you and me.... This totally ignores the nonprofits that the ultra wealthy create to funnel their funds into a clever tax shelter. Seriously Tiffany, I would loooooooooove to watch a video on this!! Please!!!

  • Now i am realising did you gave your animation and voice to some games? You are amazing! If you gave, those were my favourite characters, and now i found you, the long lost vlogger from 2012! My account got deleted and i lost you and nearly 10 years later i found you and didn't even recognised that you were probably the pioneer of starting vlog on KZhead or anywhere. For me atleast, you were the first girl or anyone who was so real, or open, or truthful about their life, it was unimaginable, to the whole world of Internet, i think you changed my mindset and worldview completely, i don't think anyone can grasp how big impact that had on everyone, let me give example, just because my worldview changed, i reacted more openly, to others, like you are the source beam and i am just a transponder, now multiply that to how many people used to watch your vlogs. I think i can say you changed the world, atleast for me. And that's not adding your contributions to games! And you still young and changing the world with your podcast or what these are! Are there any words even left to add? Or explain and describe what kind of impact in that short time of defining period & evolving of Internet were you making impact. Please why are there no ads whenever i click on your videos? Others have atleasr 8 ads in 10 or 12 minute video, but you never have any, how will you have money? I love your genuineness, but don't lag behind other, who copy you, that is the whole world, we are from defining generation, we have to mold and carve the world for better functioning and correct what we faced all wrongdoing done on us by older generations, by having all control over money, and not sharing the wealth with us, the younger generations, and for anything you will do, you need proper supply for yourself and to proper care for you. So take care of yourself too.

  • I grew up in Florida and the lottery was established there in the late 80s or early 90s, I’m pretty sure by referendum but my memory may be faulty on that. Anyway, the big vote getter was using lottery funds to supplement education. But, just as you said, they threw in the lottery money and moved the equivalent amount to other budget categories. So, one of my HS English teachers sued the state. Unsuccessfully, but I was glad she tried.

And then you mention Jerry and Marge go large and Bryan Cranston is the lead in that movie as well. I didn’t realize the lottery was state funded, now I’m curious how it works in Canada.

  • Me, a semi-impulsive ADHDer: "you should take the lump sum cause you never know where your life is gonna be in 10 years, or even alive y'know?" Me @ myself: THIS IS EXACTLY WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE THE LONG TERM PAYMENTS 😂😂. Like, I don't think I could spend multi-millions all that fast but getting middle class yearly income amounts of per year or month or whatever should give that same exact feeling of being loaded while still having the ability to limit oneself somewhat. Anyway you're apparently statistically more likely to experience a lot of other rare things than win the lottery, I've heard the lottery is another tax on the poor and it makes sense when its been explained. Also the public lotto winner thing is extremely dangerous I still don't get why they allow the names to be public. They can make sure its real without forcing publicity on every winners.
