Why why why is this band not more popular? They are incredible! Misplaced Childhood is an absolute masterpiece!!!!!
@johnhassink6875 Жыл бұрын
Possibly because their original singer (Fish) left just as they were getting popular in the US. They did two tours with Rush (Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows) in the US as the opening act, and it got them lots of exposure. MC was huge in Britain.

@@christopherharmon2433 Marillion was indeed plagued by the same sort of split that hit a lot of bands at the peak of their success. Loosing their lead singer lost my interest in the future Hogarth edition of the band. Maybe one day I'll try some of those "Fish season end" albums. ;-)

Fish’s poetry and vocal emotion are truly breathtaking but he’s just not there without the band. These guys were truly an amazing collection of talent that relied so heavily on the other and made them perhaps the greatest musical storytellers of our time. Like when I’m listening to Rush, I might start the song drumming, then singing, then air guitaring and even a bit of air keyboarding. Every element of this band is just as essential as the next. It took me a bit to warm up to Hogarth but I have to say I do like Marillion now as well. They’re a totally different band with a totally different experience but it feels like they just started a new relationship after being stuck in a very abusive one. I tried Fish without Marillion but there was so much missing.
@scdrescher1 Жыл бұрын
Sorry but Marillion without Fish are middle of the road, ordinary. There is no passion, no soul in their music. Plenty of people like it so well done to them but for me the worst of Fish post Marillion is way better than the best of Marillion post Fish. Vigil, Weltschmerz, Raingods with Zippos and Internal Exile are up there with the four Marillion / Fish studio albums. Nothing Marillion have made since comes close.

To listen to Marillion is to abolish the surge of everyday noises and images to half-open the space of an elsewhere where contingency and representation give way to the immateriality of the sensitive. The expressive power of the sound architecture breaks with any form of transcription of reality to attach itself to the expression of a fabulous universe where the color and the hythm of the compositions constitute an expiration which gives voice to the exaltation

I'd never heard of them until I was sat on a bar stool many years ago and my guitarist said "that's fish". I still had to have it explained to me and an hour or so later he asked to sit in with us for a couple of numbers. Next night the same thing. I cannot recall which night it was , but it is documented on the rear sleeve of one of their albums where he explained taking a swim and slicing his foot open in the river and a story about a Moroccan waiter. Good days, really nice guy, the business takes the odd prisoner though as shown by the lead singer of Uriah Heep that lived the other side of the river and used to watch us play in an hotel there at the same time.. If you're reading Fish, it was Skindles Taplow to be precise although everyone considered it Maidenhead and you were the last big name singer to play there following in the footsteps of The Stones, AC/DC, The Stranglers, The Strawbs to name a few

I have this CD, exact cover & name, but it includes different songs and a shorter recording. I want this nearly 3 hour disc. Anybody know how to get this one? I've been listening to this one for a while & many of the song endings get cut off? Is this an album or did someone edit it together?
I first heard this music when I was 14 years old (this was in 1985 on the 3rd programme of Polish radio), and it is still amazing, magic. Today I'm almost 53 and I still love Marillion.👍😊
Hi Michal :-) Yeah I used to listen to 3rd programme ov Polish radio! I lived near Polish border and your radio was almost the only possibility to listen to GOOD music! I remember "Lista przebojow programu trzeciego" ♥ Nice days of my youth... long gone...
@@Jestrabnik Yes, it's true. LP3 on Saturday nights and '80s music was amazing - the music still is :)
Hi, i first heard Marillion in 1999 on Polish "Radio tak" (Radio Yes) in a program "Rock island" tracks Script for a Jester's Tear and Forgotten Sons, a few weeks later I bought the first CD in my life, it was a Script for a Jester's Tear
Why why why is this band not more popular? They are incredible! Misplaced Childhood is an absolute masterpiece!!!!!
Maybe one day I'll try some of those "Fish season end" albums. ;-)
Reason they aren't popular = Fish is no longer the lead singer.
They seemed to suffer from being classed as a Genesis rip off band. I can remember that label stopped me from listening to their music for ages - and that was even though I actually knew Mark Kelly 😀
@@eddieingalls534 your joking. Genesis Marillion are worlds apart

I keep coming back to 80's music. Nothing beats it. Great bands and solo artists that could actually play instruments. Marillion with Fish just amazing, so many great memories.
First I thought this was an official album, but when I checked out on "ProgArchives" and I found this is YOUR own work I told myself: "You should congratulate the boy" and that is why I writing this lines. You have done a great work my friend!!! (Being a "proghead" I love "Marillion" since 1980 and absolutely love the Fish years)

The ability this band had to write and perform moving and absorbing music is a once in a generation opportunity. The four studio albums were incredible and still are.
FANTASTIQUE MARILLION.

Bonsoir, quelle aubaine vous avez eu !
Marillion - after Fish, it's a great band (so it seems - I don't know cause I don't listen them anymore). With him, it's God speaking to my mind - and blessing my youth. I stopped my walkman in 89. Thank you for this tribute ++
No doubts at all, this Is One of the best bands in the '80-'90 and MISPLACED CHILDHOOD an Absolute Masterpiece...thanks a lot FISH your voice Is unimitable!!!
THIS BAND HAS ALWAYS BEEN OUTSIDE THE BOX, SO MUCH THAT THE ALBUMS WERE FUNDED BY THE FANS, RESULTING IN ONE OF THE BIGGEST BANDS UNDERESTIMATED AND OSTRACISED BY OFFICIAL MEDIA The best progressive rock band of the 80s, when the great apogee of the music that had started at the end of the 50s really arrived, Marillion is the great progressive rock band, listening to these men is to lament the current state of music in all its extension
FISH is Marillion. Period. As several people here have stated already. I discovered Marillion in the early 80’s and the first thing I reckoned was the marvelous voice and accent of FISH…It’s tremendous and a very STRONG voice indeed. It FITS the band perfectly. I haven’t heard one Steve song…sorry but it’s true!
Dont bother. you missed nothing. Stick with uncle Fish
Can’t agree
@@hanreality.7266 there is no doubt that the former vocalist of euopean is a competent vocalist with a great voice, now I apologize a lot, Marillion today is one of those common bands, Marillion with Fish is one of the great bands of progressive rock, giants
Fish Is Fish. But without Fish Marillion are not Marillion. Fish alone could not equal Marillion with Fish
Steve Rothery has many amazing solos, but in the opinion of many, his best is on Easter, post-Fish. I like Fish era Marillion best, but there are some absolute gems in the H era as well.
Great memories of the 80's. Great voice...Great lyrics...Great keyboards...Great guitars...Great drums !!! What else ? Great romantic guitar solo of Master Steve !!! 26:25 A French Marillion fan of the Fish years
❤
My son just turned 18 some days ago. His music taste is very different, but we both enjoy Misplaced Childhood on the rare occasions when we drive together in the car. It makes me happy. We have not too many good things to pass on to the next generation but this is one. Maybe this music will be part of his life when I have long gone.
NOT DEAD YET ...MAKA LOVE AND KISSES !!!
Fish era…there aren’t really any ‘best’ songs, they’re all Best:)
To me this is THE only Marillion with fish the lead man
Steven Rothery knew just how to season the music with his strat. Just like good food.
Here in Liverpool we have an incredible fish era tribute band called Cillirion, they are note for note perfect, check them out if you can, just amazing.
You can also check Mr Punch tribute band, the solo guitarist is brilliant
I didn't know they were from Liverpool me too! Now live in Canada 🇨🇦
ROBERT..... do you if they are playing Anywhere local..over the next couple of weeks....(local . Being = wirral to as far as chester .and Liverpool to outskirts .. Because as we no longer will get to have our regular singsong with the man with the gift for words...then I figure that tributes. Are best we gonna get
Weird that a band like Marillion have a tribute band when they themselves were a Genesis tribute band , and before all the Marillion fans get typing I bought the first 12" before you were born and saw them on their first tour at Newcastle Mayfair roughly the same time .
Yes, it is true 😉

A real treat! Wonderful compilation. I´m a fan since the "Jester´s tear" aera. Since 4 years I prefer the genius music of "IQ".
Since i was a teen in the 80´s, enjoying their timeless music. Good post !! Greetings from Argentina.

Great mix of the songs here. Thanks for putting this together. I got into Marillion with "Misplaced Childhood". I'll forgo the Fish vs h debate as I think that's redundant now. Enjoyed them in their early days, and enjoy them now. One of my all-time favorite bands.
As long as the music is good, we should have an open mind. It is the same with e.g. Genesis with Gabriel vs Collins and also prog vs more pop/rock hits.
Love Marillion 4ever. Don't Sing Assassin too loud in the street...lest you get Arrested😂. Multi talented band always in my heart..then I followed Fish on his solo...Dark Star. He's a lovely man🥰. Shakespeare would flow off him, he should have acted too, away from the videos, perhaps he has been in the theatre too.
Best Marillion of all times . . . . 😎😎😎

I listen to Marillion since nearly 40 years, day by day. But only the music of the Fish-time. I only like Led Zeppelin more. And that says a lot...
Tux on & Lady Nina, my favorites... but a great collection anyway!👍👍👍
OMG Steve Rothery !! You are a guitar god ...
excelente grupo y cd wua , wua
A masterpiece is missing.. Grendel
Exactly. How is the "best of" without the best song?
And don't forget Tux On
Grendel is not a really great song. Quite repetitive and using a quite uninspiring progression . I don't know. Perhaps too raw and lacking work. But, what do I know?

The totally missed this band in the 80s, now I have the pleasure of listening, only the first 4 albums. I thought dires Straits was good, but listening to lyrics and the band, I think these guys are no1 for me. They perform like the studio at concerts, very few bands can. Dire Straits mix and performance at concerts was terrible apart from the Hammersmith one which was OK.
