  • Vehicle Specialists are well worth the money, and often work out cheaper in the long run, because they can go directly to the problem. I owned an original Mini back in the day, and used a Mini specialist in Preston. I could ring them up and describe the vaguest symptoms, and they always knew what the problem was. Further more, they were always right. 100% success in 5 or 6 years. That's pretty impressive.

    @matthewgodwin3050@matthewgodwin30504 ай бұрын
    • 100 percent agree with this. The only problem is sometimes specialists get carried away with their reputation and end up thinking they main dealers with their pricing. Local BMW specialists almost charge as much as main dealers near me for servicing. On older BMWs their are national discounts applied by dealers so often makes them half reasonable

    • Yup, I’ve used specialist garages for years - mainly for the various Alfa Romeos I’ve owned. Much cheaper, and (in my experience) more knowledgeable than the main dealers. Ok, som don’t get offered a courtesy car, free coffee or wi-fi, but I’m also spending a great deal less on services and repairs.

    • @@Marty1976 don't think that main dealer wouldn't do the same thing. And with a 100 pound diagnostic before they do a thing. More likely to get a cheaper fix from a specialist. Near me polish mechanics know their beemers too.

    • Feel your pain. Only similar experience I had was with a ford galaxy. Paid 100 to main dealer whose response was to change a whole fan unit and some ecu part at a cost of 1300 just for a stupid cooling fan that wouldn't switch off even when the engine is off. Car was only worth 5k

  • I genuinely think, Matt, you pulling up to the car and working out what you need to spend on the car shows that you are a good car dealer. Even if it's things that ain't totally necessary, such as wheel refurbs and such that gets the car looking right for the next owner. You ain't just interested in making a quick quid or two. Keep up the good work, Matt.

    • Blower motor - will have been killed by the water ingress likely (or not helped by it) same for the keyfobs not working, will be chasing corrosion due to ingress; its a focus part (same for the C30/S40) Noise that you thought was wheel / tyre has oftern turned out to be the driveshaft(s) This mismatched headlight; this is why you have error code on the dash for it and also this makes us think it has had a shunt of some sort. (unless they thought replacing the headlight unit would fix a problem they had... Sadly this is just a bit too far gone for retail; its all fixable but at what cost; good choice to get rid, shame though decent bones on it.

    • re the bonding issue, bit nerdy detail but it wasn't just Volvo that had a issue. 2007/2008 onwards they and the industry moved to a more eco friendly bonding agent for the screens. For Volvo they had two issues, defect from factory where they wernt bonded correctly (i think there was a recall for this) and then 2nd is that after 8-10yrs the bonding agent fails early on the screens (and anything else that uses the same sort of bonding agent. like the wingmirror glass) result, water ingress that makes a mess.

They definitely didn't for the door fabric :( I've had some issues with moisture, I /think/ I mostly resolved it by replacing the main weather seals on all four door frames and the boot lid, but that puddle of water at 27:13 is exactly where it was collecting in my car, just not nearly that much. Sadly summer is coming up, so while I previously dreaded it, right now I'm hoping for a long and cold rainstorm so I can verify the new seals have fixed the issue.

  • I bought a demo V50 back in 2004 not long after it's launch. It came with all the option boxes ticked and had only 1000 miles on the clock. Nine months later I was glad to see the back of it. Amongst a lengthy list of issues, one was a water leak where water poured out the dash and the carpets were soaking. And yes, the exact same issue, the windscreen hadn't been sealed properly. Apparently this was the 2nd attempt at repair as Volvo UK, the previous owner, also had it replaced. As I say that was one of a long list of issues. I had two V70's prior to that, loved them, but this is where Volvo started going downhill. The dealer wasn't interested, Volvo UK couldn't have cared less. That was 19 years ago and I still wouldn't consider one. In fact a few days after delivery I drove from Scotland to Cheshire. It returned to Scotland on a recovery vehicle to the supplying dealer as the local dealers down there weren't able to recify a problem with the engine management system. Unfortunately consumer rights weren't as stringent back then. The term 'rejection' never existed, you simply bought a 'Friday afternoon' car that needed put right.

A similarly horrible experience might be enough to steer somebody towards the traditionally safe brands like Toyota that are at minimum not a total mess and usually trouble free (even though certain Toyotas have their issues, such as recent RAV4s leaking water from the roof itself, or an unlucky person gets the bad car of the batch)

For your trade yes you would be overspending but it’s ideal for a Volvo fan boy who does not mind spending a few weekends fixing it. You had one of these on the channel years ago where it had been sat for years but after one video where you cleaned it up we never knew the outcome.

  • Hi Matt. I have an xc90 and has same water leak issue and sounds like under the carpet. So far what I found was the water drain under the mesh of the windscreen wipers was blocked, it was full of muck (probably not cleaned since new 2004). So water gets to through inside perhaps from the air filter for cabin. Cleaned all the drains (two tubes-one on each side) located at the wall engine bay under the wipers. Lovely car that v50 - would have been a good project for me at 1250!

  • Actually both the headligths on the vechile are xenons, however one of them is the more expensive xenon with the curve function (ABL) and the other one is just the normal xenon (you can see that since its got the blue contrast around the lense which indicates regular xenons. I believe the car was originally equipped with the ABL headlight judging by the light switch panel inside the car where you can opt for activating the curve function to the headlights.

The wet clutch box is generally decent so long as you service it on time, its usually neglecting oil changes that break them. As far as I'm aware these volvos use the wet clutch box. The dry clutch box is the problematic one and its these that give the powershift its bad reputation. I think they claim to be "sealed for life" too which doesn't help either.

  • Moving it on is probably the right thing to do. If the heater motor was easy/cheap to get hold of or it didn't have that water leak, then it's probably worth your time to save, but those two issues alone could spiral costs out of control, and that's before the usual age-related costs start arriving. Which is a shame because I think the V50 is a truly handsome car and that blue is lovely. Hopefully it goes to someone who can justify the investment to keep it going.

  • I had same issues with my Rdesign V50. Windscreen was poorly fitted so ingress over the years had gone into the ECU which gave me dash signs. Dealer tested it and dried out the ECU unit and I replaced the windscreen and no more faults on the dash!

  • As others have mentioned there was a windscreen issue with a number of Volvo models around this time. Volvo didn’t issue a recall notice, but did offer to sort out/assist with repairs. This assistance ended only three years ago and I just scrapped in with my XC60. The Dealer told me that the wrong adhesive had been used when built and, where possible, they would remove my windscreen, which pretty much lifted out with minimal effort, and re bond it with the correct sticky glue. Two years on and after rain that would make Noah twitchy all is fine.

  • Hi Matt happy new year. Old Volvos and new Volvos are quality cars. The V50 is a shitty ford underneath and are a disgrace to the brand so glad you got rid. This is the 3rd ford I have heard about with leaking windscreens the other two were Kugas...

  • I had a pre-facelift V50 with no leakage issues; post facelifts were notorious for it for some reason and locating the source of the leaks can be quite frustrating. That was the HEM unit you saw on the passenger side- it's supposed to be like that, no trim covers it unusually enough. They are quite easy to remove though when investigating an electrical issue, which can sometimes be numerous on these cars.

  • We love that you have ur sensible hat on but we also love hearing you say “massively overspent” lol but that’s good ur not getting carried away. Volvos are so expensive to fix. My s80 is giving me a headache but I love him.

  • V50’s, V70’s and XC70’s of this era all suffer from windscreen leaks… something to do with adhesive used in the factory. I had a swimming pool in my front footwell after a day of heavy showers and the more I investigated it the more cases I found. Replaced the screen with a new one and it hasn’t leaked since.

  • Another great video Matt. Re the gear box I believe it will be the powershift DCT450 in that. It does require a service every 3 years or 30k miles which ever happens first. I'm on my second change on my mk5 Mondeo and touch wood it's been sweet so far........so far!! 😂😂

  • Well done. Bit sad as it looked so good but leaks are a pain . It needed a new windscreen unless there was rust under the old one causing problems. I 'm lucky my 19 year old Mondeo estate does not have the problems your acquisitions seem to have, but that is why folk sell them to you!

  • I owned a Volvo C30 in this colour and absolutely loved it, currently driving a grey Volvo V40. So as a self appointed Volvo expert I can confirm that at 11:25 what you have found there is the full size spare wheel, it was a Volvo optional extra so naturally cost £8999 + VAT 😂 Love the content, Keep saving cars my friend!
