  • There are a few actors I perceive as being fearless. No fucks given how silly they might look, or if anyone likes how they approach a role. It's a joy to see an actor this good just go balls to the wall in a gonzo role. Dafoe always seems willing to go all in for a performance. There are others... Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Nick Cage on a good day.... but as good as Defoe is, I am actually surprised Hollywood doesn't use him more than they do. Seems to me, if you cast this dude, you are half way home to a good movie. In this example, I can't say he carried the film on his own. This film had a LOT of good performances. But his was the standout performance of the bunch.

  • 3:07 Fun fact, Willem Dafoe was hoping he would get to fire a gun during the making of the film, but he never got to up until the shooting of this scene, being one of the last scenes to film before wrapping production, which left him disappointed, so Troy Duffy let him fire his gun in the air during this scene unscripted.

  • Willem Dafoe as Paul Smecker is, in my opinion, the perfect way to write a "Gay" character, and represents homosexuality in a much better way than most of the movies that set out to do that by way that it doesn't even try to make a big point about it. It's something that happens behind the scenes but influences the forefront of his personality. The movie doesn't have to go around saying "He's gay, he's gay, he's gay" because it doesn't matter. He'd be the same character if he wasn't gay, but his homosexuality obviously plays a part in how he acts and speaks and *is* for all intense and purposes, as a human being who is influenced by his personal life as anybody else. They don't let sexuality define his character, but they let the character embrace their sexuality. What you end up with is a "comfortable" homosexual, who feels real and genuine, and what's more, like a total badass. For gay representation in film, there's little better places to turn than Boondock Saints. Or, you know, you can just "Reference" that a character *is* a sexuality but never care about it or let it be embraced in a realistic and believable manner, and then focus on that one element of the character and exacerbate it so everybody *knows* they are gay. You know, like Disney does because they want all that gay-money and don't care or understand the people they're pandering too. They see transgendered people and homosexuals like cash-cows and don't even write them into "human" roles. Even the women they hire are effected by this because unless it's a straight white man, Disney can't seem to make them feel "human" or relatable. Probably because they don't view anybody who isn't that way as "human" and instead view them as a "Paycheck" and a "burden" that has to be met before they can release a film. It's disgusting and unnecessary when you consider how being subtle and respectful about sexuality creates far more compelling, relatable, and fun characters to watch without removing from the quality of your film or characters.

    @TIMTV69@TIMTV692 жыл бұрын
    • Long story short: Don't write "gay characters." Write characters that are interesting, likeable, entertaining, and/or relatable; characters that appeal to the general audience, that just so happen to be gay.
