    • @@scientia.veritas Nobody is expecting everything to be accessible to everyone. What this person is talking about is just asking for the bare minimum to ensure that people with disabilities who for example sit in a wheelchair can still get into buildings, get to all the floors, fit through all the doorways and go to the bathroom. If you _can_ make something at least a little more inviting to a bigger variety of people, why not do it? It’s not like able bodied people suffer because of ramps or elevators. And as far as the video goes, obviously you can never cater to everyone’s needs but when a person who even has some status and influence, continually write to you asking to collaborate trying to create a product made for little people, you could at least have the decency to respond, decline the offer, and explain why that isn’t a good option for them and why they won’t do it. They're interior doors, so no button to open them, either.

I'd show up on time, wait 45 minutes to an hour past my appointment time, while watching other doctors' patients who got there after me go first; get put in the room, wait even longer, and when she finally showed up, I'd get an obviously rushed 5 minutes with her. • I think when a city or business “makes things accessible”, they should confirm it by getting in a wheelchair or pushing a wheel chair on it/through it. I pushed my mom in a wheelchair for 10 years. You’d be shocked at what qualifies as accessible and really isn’t. People as individuals play a role too. Keep side walks clear of cars, garbage cans, debris, snow and ice. If you live on a corner, I know it is a pain to shovel it out every time a snow plow comes by, but it is back breaking to pull someone in a wheelchair ( and dangerous for low vision individuals) to just cross a street. I have seen the best of people, who have come out and cleared a sidewalk for Mom. I also have had to deal with people who say she should just have stayed home in winter (etc). Differently able people have every right to get out and about and live their lives! Now that my mother is gone, I still think of ways to make my property and community easier for all people to experience.

Some inclines that are doable in a manual chair with assistance are not independently or with other mobility aids. Testing has to be done for universal design, not just for one situation. Sure one person in a wheelchair can make it up the ramp, but can everyone else? Property ownership involves responsibility to your community as much as it does to whomever is in/on the property, and that should always include everyone

  • That first aid course lesson is low-key how I saved my own life when I wave in fifth grade and choking on a six inch long piece of meat that I somehow swallowed. I couldn’t breath and no one knew how to help me. And, since I couldn’t breathe, I figured that there was no harm in trying to get the meat out myself. So I stuck my fingers as far back as I could, grabbed onto the meat, and slowly pulled it out. It was bonkers.

  • Great to get the shout out to "The Body Keeps The Score" by Dr. B. Van der Kolke. An absolutely amazing book, it's what made me want to become a physiotherapist and work in trauma. Would just to anyone interested in reading it though: SERIOUS TRIGGER WARNING. Lots of very harrowing case studies relating to all manner of abuse, veterans, disasters, some really messed up stuff. But fascinating and incredibly vindicating on how our brains and bodies store and manifest trauma. Solid book Doctor Mike, thanks for recommending.

  • In regards to the doctor appointment meme: I've had my doctor cancel my appointments three times in the past. Once was because he was called into the hospital for an emergency, which I wasn't mad about. However, the other two times were because, the morning of the appointment, he decided he 'wanted to take his lunch break at that time'. I book my appointments a couple weeks to a month in advance, and all three times, he cancelled them the day of, and I was never told until I walked into the building hours later, wasting my time and gas money. So, now, this resulted in me no longer trusting my doctor (which I told the front desk people as such), and I no longer go in for regular check-ups because of that. I only book appointments for emergencies now, and God help him if he cancels those ones for another bs 'lunch break'. Also, even when I do get to have my appointment, I'm left waiting in the waiting room for no less than a half-hour before I'm called back, then another twenty minutes for the nurse to talk to me, and another twenty to thirty minutes before the doctor comes in. So, I totally understand Pam in that regard. And, no, the building is not packed when I go in. The most amount of people there's ever been when I go in is three other people.

      @Island-Girl@Island-Girl Жыл бұрын
    • @@barbourgirl78 Would love to, but I live in a rural small community (growing, but still small) and every time we get a new PCP doctor, they fill up within a week or two of starting their practice. Always, "Not taking new patients." Even the walk-in clinics here (which charge only slightly less than the doctors charge) often have a 3 to 6 hour waiting period just to be seen any given day. One day when they were still doing isolation and I was very sick back in the middle of January they made me sit in my car without heat (in 28 F degrees snowing/sleeting weather) for 3 hours before even coming out to get my information and then another 3 hours before the doctor came to look at me and give me a prescription for some cold meds.

      @jdyerjdyer@jdyerjdyer Жыл бұрын
    • @@Island-Girl the office attendants are the ones who do it. Like, one time, I was five minutes behind, the lady told me I was going to have to reschedule. I was walking into the office as she was doing this because the amount of time it took me just to let her know I was five minutes behind was enough time for me to get there. She was ready to cancel my appointment and neither of us were prepared for the fact that the doctor had me waiting for more than an hour anyway, lol. Five minutes/ sixty minutes, I should have just walked out.

  • I was born with Juvenile Rhuematoid Arthritis and am currently in a wheelchair if and when I am able to/have to go out. Because of this, I have developped a "terrible accessability attempts and subsequent fails" sense. So, any time I happen upon someone whom I learn in one way or another, was to credit for well planned accessible designs and/or took steps to make something more accessible, I ALWAYS make a point to thank them. Its purpose is three fold: 1. They will have an easier time remembering to do so going forward, 2. They will feel good about the good thing they did, and I just like making people happy, and 3. Anyone within earshot will apply accessibility to their thinking, going forward, and if they happen to also have an impact on the potential accessibility of every day settings, it will help more and more people in the future!
