Protect Your Child: Gun Safety

2019 ж. 23 Қыр.

Firearms are the leading method of suicide. Putting time and distance between a person in crisis and firearms saves lives. In this story, a father is always there for his son as he grows up and faces real challenges of life. The father is watching over him even when the son is considering suicide. Protect teens and help prevent suicide by locking up guns and ammo in secure safes or moving them off-site until the crisis has been adverted. Zero suicides is the only acceptable number.
If you or a loved on are considering suicide, please call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK [8255]).
For more information on suicide prevention please visit - intermountainhealthcare.org/zerosuicide

  • Hey guys, I dont like to post serious comments such as this but i saw this add on TV and it really hit me. Unfortunately about a year ago i attempted to take my own life in this way. Luckily i missed most of my head but lost a good part of my nose and lips. My dad was the one who found me and had to take the gun away before I took a second shot. For whoever it may help, if you notice your son or daughter beeing a bit quite or sad, just be safe and always put guns in a locked safe. And if the thought of hurting yourself ever even flashes though your mind for a second - talk to someone please. I dont think suicide is very selfish and please remember those who succeeded with kindness, but the guilt of succeeding or suviving is terrible and causes terrible pain to your family. My dad and I’s relationship and memories are identical to the ones in this video, he is the most loving man ever but some things just cant be fixed. I love you dad.

  • To me, this is a positive gun safety ad. It deals with the fact that some people want, have, and/or need guns in their lives in a realistic way rather than an unrealistic “just don’t have a gun” message, while promoting proper safety and storage. As a big pro gun guy and an avid Hunter, I approve of this ad. I have no children yet myself but if I do I’ll get a variety of safes for my firearms to keep them safe.

  • I think this is a good psa. In australia, its required by law to have 2 different safes when you have a gun license, but thats not implemented everywhere. But also, as someone who has attempted to ykw themselves, its important to make sure teens and kids dont have easy access to things that can kill them (like guns, medications, drugs etc) because its not hard to at least try take your own life once you get in that mindset

  • I've been close to this point in my life. I just started getting some real bad thoughts at work and thought about the ways I could take my own life, sad thing is that this wasn't even the first time I thought about it. Before I had ultimately decided to use pills and alcohol to just drift away. But going through the various methods in my head, when I thought about a gun, my thoughts changed. Before it was ruled out because I didn't want to make a mess and traumatize my family with that image. But as I thought about a gun that day at work something in me changed and I realized that the only reason I really ruled it out was because I didn't have a permit for a gun. I started bawling and broke down right there. When I got home I told my mom and she immediately started to look up therapists and she told me everything was gonna be okay and just talked to me about 4 or 5 hours about anything and everything we could think of. While I haven't gone to a therapist I promised my mom that if anything like that popped up in my head that I would immediately go to her and we would just sit down to talk. If you ever find yourself in a low point, don't be scared to talk to your family, the love and support they give you can be a literal lifesaver.

But gun safes also make it easier for the criminal to kill you before you can get your gun loaded and have his way with your daughter before killing her too. Bad shit happens. I’d rather the responsibility land on me rather than Fate and causality. I will control my destiny. My gun is 5 feet away, unloaded but ammo is attached to the gun ready to go. Guns are a surefire (the pun was unintentional at first but I am not sorry) way to get the job done quick and fast. Not saying that you shouldn't be very careful with prescription drugs, but removing guns as a safety threat is very helpful.

It's always good to teach children about the danger of weapons if you have it in your home, no matter what the weapon is. For me, it's my dad's knife collection. If you forbid a kid from doing something, they're just gonna wanna do it more. If you're wondering how I stabbed my hand. I stole one of my dad's knives and tried stabbing some stuff. I found an empty water bottle and tried to stab it. While holding the bottle, my hand is directly at the other side of the knife. When I apply too much pressure, it went through the entire bottle and accidentally stabbing my hand. It was only like half an inch away from my thumb. So, I could've lost my thumb .

  • I don't believe in mandatory lock up laws, what good is a defensive tool, if it's locked away. HOWEVER. This ad hit all the right aspects of good firearms ownership. The Dad taught his Son about firearms and safety at a young age, he noticed something was wrong and took the Son to seek help, when it was learned that there might be a problem "then" he locked the guns away from the person having the issues. If you live with someone who is going through depression or has expressed suicide ideation, then that person needs to have Zero access to firearms. More ads like this please, most just blame the gun as causing all the problems, people switch off and disregard it as propaganda. Though, more than a gun safe, that kid obviously wasn't being helped, if even after a "talk" with a therapist he was still going to go through with suicide, maybe something 'more' than a talk. If you're worried about your kid enough to no longer trust him around firearms. Why then leave him alone at home. Generally depression and thoughts of suicide don't just go away on their own. If you or someone you know has thought about, or talked about suicide. Call 988 the National Life line, they can help you, or give you support and resources to possibly help a loved one.

    • You can’t be around a teenager 24/7. The lesson is that the dad kept his guns locked up when he had even the slightest suspicion that his son could be having suicidal thoughts.

  • This is beyond belief, how are you supposed to protect your family when you need the guns? The parents failed to raise their child properly and to respect guns and his own life. And I see some people trying to argue that he's not selfish, that boy is beyond selfish for trying something like that. Also, just locking guns in a safe, which if he tried, wouldn't have been a problem to get through by force; those guns would not prevent a kid from offing themselves, as there's so many options for a guaranteed success. P.S. sorry for the long comment, wanted to say more but this is enough.

  • I am very fortunate. I'm able to afford guns, two guns safes. And I know gun safety. I've taught kids how to be safe with guns that aren't mine. That I will tell you. I was bullied as a kid and I was a tall, pretty much lanky kid you would think wouldn't be bullied. One kid who bullied me was short and basically psychotic and that basically drove me almost to suicide. So. This film had an impact on me. I had nowhere to turn to. The kid was just crazy. And anyone who's in that situation, understand. Seek help. There's more help out there, saying guidance counselors. Clergy, whoever. Don't give in to stuff like that. You have a good life to live. Don't give in.

  • If the population of the USA all killed each other with firearms, well, I’d be sorry, but not surprised. Just ask your local NRA representative not to fund lobbyists in Canada, or other countries. A very strong majority of Canadians want a hand gun ban, a semi automatic ban, multi round magazines. We have, for the most part, nothing against long guns for hunters, farmers, trappers. We have 1/8th your firearm homicide rate. We would like to reduce it to 1/120th your rate, as the UK has. In the UK, pop. 67M, there are ≈35 firearm homicides a year.
