  • Imagine how he suffered a disastrous short program at the 2018 Winter Olympics, expected to win but finished 4th, in front of the entire world. Had to wait four long years, through hard work, sweat and tears, attending school at Yale (!), then a defeat at Skate America just a few months before these Olympics (which could’ve shaken his confidence)….YET overcomes all these struggles to make it back to another Winter Olympic Games, this time battling three extremely talented Japanese skaters, and finally WINNING the GOLD with two outstanding performances in the short and long programs! Nathan Chen is simply REMARKABLE.

  • Love the way the Japanese skaters applauded Nathan's performance. Now that is sportsmanship!!! Nathan Chen saw a sports psychologist who emphasized that he should go out to the skating rink and enjoy himself and not concentrate on winning. In the 2018 Winter Olympics Nathan admitted that he was concentrating on winning and the pressure affected his performance. Look at his 2022 performance and notice how relaxed he appeared and he even smiled during the middle of the program. Hope to see him back in 2026 after he finishes his degree at Yale. His loving mother believed in his son and sacrificed so much for him. She is really a humble person and wore plain clothing and no make-up when she surprised her son at the Today show.

    • It’s been 20 years since Nathan started at age 3, and he already went to two Olympics, leaving the sport with an Olympic gold and at his peak is most appropriate in my humble opinion. After receiving his degree at Yale, I think he is ready to move on to preparing for something even bigger, like the President of the United States.

    • The Japanese skaters might be gracious, but a LOT of their fans aren't. Watch how many times in videos the Fanyu's do not applaud for Nathan after his fantastic performances. In many of the competitions, especially in Japan, Nathan's applause was tepid compared to Hanyu's. It's fine that the Japanese would applaud more and be louder for Hanyu, but the difference between the two was striking and, in my opinion, poor sportsmanship on behalf of those people who did not also applaud for Nathan.

  • I haven't watched skating in a while, but weirdly, Sarah Hughes' skate that won her the gold in Salt Lake came up yesterday, and this one came up today for me. I remember leading up to this, people compared Nathan to Michelle Kwan, with all of the weight of expectation coupled with a (perceived) failure in Pyeongchang (I maintain that he kind of needed to implode to rebuild, but that's for another day). However, when I watch this, I see the same freedom that Sarah Hughes had that made her so great in that long program. Unlike Nathan, she really WASN'T the best skater in that competition, but I remember watching it live...that kid had JOY. She was there to skate her best in the Olympics, and did it. She skated like she had nothing to lose. It was awesome to watch her. But Nathan is next level because he WAS the best. He had ALL the weight of expectation, and he still skated with joy and like he had nothing to lose. Incredible.

    • And Hanyu has not done two clean programs since 2015. That is I believe because he had to skate more difficult programs to compete and he is unable to do them.

      @howardchan6167@howardchan61672 жыл бұрын
    • @@howardchan6167 Yes, Hanyu is unable to do them. He's never been able to skate at Nathan's level. Hanyu has only ever been consistent with three quads. At four quads, he often makes mistakes. At five quads, fatigue sets in halfway through the LP, and he makes lots of mistakes. He's never had a lot of stamina. That's why he only ever attempted five quads once in his career at the 2019 GPF. Fatigue set in quickly, and the program started to fall apart. Halfway through, his energy was so tapped out that he basically dropped all his presentation, skating listlessly around the rink. For that LP, he only scored 100 technical points and 94 PCS for a total of 194. He wasn't even close to cracking 200 because he got so much -GOE for mistakes. In contrast, Nathan scored 129.14 in technical and 95.78 for PCS, totaling 224.92 in the LP. He crushed Hanyu by 44 points at that competition. Even with five quads, Hanyu couldn't beat Nathan because Nathan's base value is so much higher, and Nathan is FAR more consistent than Hanyu. Here's something you might not know. Hanyu has only ever skated two clean programs back-to-back just TWICE in his 12-year career: at 2015 NHK and the 2015 GPF. That's it. Even prior to that, Hanyu was a very inconsistent skater. In fact, he never won BOTH of this Grand Prix assignment competitions in a season until the 9th year of his career, the season AFTER Peyongchang. Leading up to the Sochi Olympics, he lost both his Grand Prix assignment competitions. The season after winning gold in Sochi he lost both of his Grand Prix assignment competitions AGAIN, along with his World title. In his 12-year career, Hanyu has skated in 43 international competitions but won only 17 of them. That's a 40% win rate or winning just 4 out of every 10 competitions. That's a losing record. Even after winning gold in Sochi. commentators would often talk about his inconsistency. In contrast. Nathan has a win rate of 73% or winning over 7 our of every 10 international competitions across his career, losing just 6 competitions in 6 years. That's the highest win rate of any skater in the modern era (post-1970). As you probably know, in the last 5 years of Nathan's 6-year career, he lost just twice for a win rate of 88%. In the last 4 years of his career with three undefeated seasons, Nathan lost just once for a 92% win rate. That's because Nathan is a FAR better and more consistent skater than Hanyu. Other skaters also have much better and winning records over Hanyu's losing record: Plushenko (68% win rate), Yagudin (61%). Hanyu has always been inconsistent. That's also why he never had even one undefeated season.

      @L1623VP@L1623VP2 жыл бұрын
    • @@L1623VP I watched the 2019 GPF and it was not pretty. Basically Hanyu was not able to lift his legs and grasped for air at the end. I believe it was only one of a few occasions he tried 4Lz. The funny thing is if he can't do 4Flip and 4Lz consistently why try to hit 4A. I guess he wants to be recognized for something if he can't beat Nathan.

  • I started ice skating a couple weeks ago and now that I rewatched Nathan’s performance I admire him and others figure skaters so much, when I first watched figure skating performances I thought “I could do that too” “That looks easy to do” and now that I know how ice feels, the balance, the core strength, the legs, the amount of dedication that you have to put to get to that level… As soon as I stepped a foot on the ice I was so humbled… I obviously know that I’ll never get to any of the figure skaters level but i just enjoy being on the ice and that’s what matters to most to me.

  • After watching 2022 Gold saw his 2018 competition and it made me cry. I feel many like me find his sweet soul relatable. We fall. We get up. And wow. How beautifully we get up after a number of falls sometimes. And inspire the world along the way. No wonder the heart and soul. Within his performance that won him the gold. It wasn't just in his winning. It was going thru it all. Thanks for the kind reminder sweet angel.
