It's super cool that you're reveiwing these older stages in races. Thumbs up from me!
I love these. Even if the footage isn't in 144p. P.S. Petacchi is celebrating Cav's victory, realizes, he can become 2nd easily and starts pedalling again, I always loved that scene.
Cycling fashion has come a long way in 8 years lmao
Martin-Kwiatkovsky-Trentin-Pettachi-Renshaw-Cavendish... The other teams may just as well give up. But remember that teams had one more rider at this time, so trains could be longer. Also Trentin, Kwiato and Martin could also bring stages on their own when not working for Cav so it's not exactly everything on Cavendish. (And btw Alaphilppe throw in a turn in QS train at the Tour too).
Such a ridiculous lineup 😂
Very good point!
Mate, I watch every video you post and listen to every podcast. There’s a rumor that Andorra will implement a restraining order on me because I spend too much of my life on Lanterne Rouge Media Pty Ltd and/or Lanterne Rouge Media, SL (hereafter, “LRBAMF”) content. Alas, even I do not remember you uploading this stage in the past. Keep uploading old stages with new commentary, it’s awesome and you’re killing it. On the other hand, I did recall Benji with the shoutout to Simon Yates’ stage 2 ITT potential from the Giro preview podcast. Not enough attention has been paid to that. Chapeau.
great vid, can we have a breakdown of Froome thermonuclear 2018 giro?
Imagine if Quickstep took a train of Declerq, Cavagna, Asgreen, Lampaert, Sénéchal, Ballerini, Mørkøv and Cavendish/Jakobsen to the Tour de France this year. If they led out the sprint in that order, then that leadout train would be unstoppable. Stage wins would just be a guarantee for the sprinter at that point.
And if the sprinter crashes out or can’t make it through the mountains in time? It’s an unbeatable idea in theory but all eggs in one basket has its risks.
@@ezrakoppel555 Thats why you bring both Cav and Jakobsen. One of them can crash out and you still got a sprinter :D
@@ezrakoppel555 even if they do Morkov showed last year that he could definitely win a sprint stage as the final sprinter. Imagine Askgreen leading out for him
Overkill, but yes, wonderful to see
@@ricecrusher8036 he only showed that on one stage and when they thought he was the leadout man with Quickstep boggling that sprint because they thought Cav lost Morkov’s wheel.
If you could make a review of Tony Martin’s nail bitting +170km solo breakaway at La Vuelta 2013 in which the peloton was about to catch him with 10km to go and struggled all the way to the final 500m only to catch him in the last 20-30 meters because of Cancellara? That was easily the most impressive performance I have ever seen, I think it was Morkov who won that stage.
I think this is my favourite commentary of yours yet 😁 “nope… nope… and the last man says “‘sacré bleu" and he’s not happy with that…” - I was cackling and rewound it about 12 times (I think I just showed my age by saying “rewound” 😅). As a fellow Aussie now living in Europe, it’s also always nice to hear the accent too 🇦🇺 So glad you’re doing what you’re doing, keep it up! EDIT: commented before I got to the end, just saw “Allan! Allan!” - that’s the clincher and it’s made my day 🦫
That's my type of humor. Love LR!
cheeky brit commentary is awesome XD feels like monty python doing bike racing commentary haha
That lead out train was on fire, it is worth teams building a team round a sprinter if you decide that's what you are focused on but you are right you have to win stages. With people like Cav is works and you get great publicity and sponsorship. It's bold and risky move especially if your sprinter crashes. Personally I love it, different teams going for different objectives. A stage win at one of the big 3 tours is worth a lot, it means you get the coverage.
This level of thought and analysis is the best cycling content on KZhead.
I never knew i needed a video about a 8 year ols tirreno sprint stage, but here we go
Big fan of the archive videos. Would love to see an analysis of Standard's win against the triple Wolfpack in Omloop. What a race that was.
Awesome Thanks Lanterne Rouge!
That was fun, glad you decided to upload this.
Excellent presentation!! Thank you.
Nice video LR... excellent to see some of the old stages. Keep them coming
I greatly appreciate the tactics being pointed out.
Good rundown. Thanks.
That was an awesome walk down memory lane 👍👍👍
I think there are two related reasons for the trains to be smaller now, because it worked so well it became a victim of its own success. That created: 1- A much bigger market for lead out riders, who thus became more expensive. 2- A much bigger sprinting field, making maneuvering a lot more difficult with so many riders involved. When there are 6 trains competing, it's a mess. That disrupts the large trains, while some guys (like Sagan) built their own careers without much of a leadout train at all, preferring to be deposited to the front and then browsing the wheels to follow independently in a quite flexible way. Cavendish himself does that quite efficiently, and QuickStep sometimes had Kittel sprinting basically on his own during his glory days since he was so much stronger than the opposition. Meanwhile, a good puncheur like Alaphilippe is gold for QuickStep. Kwiatkowski could also be that (or could in the past), before his move to Sky/INEOS. The reduction in sprint stages in Grand Tours also reduced the incentive to build large trains, as there are more stages for puncheurs, small groups and less numerous bunch sprints following "boring" flat stages. In a way, the TdF is contradictory in its fight against Sagan's dominance in the points competition while it was trying to reduce the flat stages to a maximum, reducing the chances of the pure sprinters to beat him along the way.
I miss a good sprint train, they are/were beautiful to watch 😍 Thanks for bringing this one back LR 🤩
love the reviews of older races!
Cav is back to the missile himself again, LOVE it!
Keep the older vids coming!! Love seeing these and the commentary is great
love this content, keep it coming man. Your channels are the next evolution of cycling coverage for the english speaking market.
Excellent commentary!!
It’s amazing when you consider that Cav won the sprint against some remarkably fast riders, and many of them excellent sprinters. ❤️
bloody heck the names in that Quickstep train !!!
Hi awesome video you should also do a video on how riders performances go down once they leave Quick-Step
Martin, Kwiatkowski, Trentin, Renshaw, Petacchi. Damn.
Brilliant montage that shows the speed, the danger , the tactics and fanaticism needed to win a mass sprint.
This is fantastic. Please do more video analyses of older stages, especially with Cavendish because he always has these dramatic finishes. Seriously that team - Cavendish, Renshaw, Martin, etc. - was the best in sprints. I miss Renshaw. I wish he were still in tip top shape to be Cav's leadout man.
Love how he always places himself in a position to be unrestricted when making his last move. His sprint comes natural at that point
4:35 Haha Mark Renshaw go BRRRRRR
Renshaw really was Cavendish's best weapon.
It often annoys me when people ascribe Cavendish's victories to just a great lead out train. I mean 160 times! But with that line up, ok you got me with that one. That was just stoopid ridiculous.
Nice!!! Really interesting!!
What a fun clip, I'd never seen that. Greipel's move was very nearly inspired but stayed just on the side of suicidally reckless :)
all time favorite bike is phil g's bmc with 3t cockpit
Holy FUCK, that was DOMINANT!
Nice video but also one of my favourites cav/renshaw moments was there,I think, first win in Paris! Where both of them road in their own league.
GOAT of video titles
I can’t believe that Renshaw and Cav still doing this shit this far on. Hats off to the lads. Chapeu!
my fave was cavendish with htc tour de france final stage win 2009
Alan! Alan! Alan! Blast from the past, well done!
Great ride! I'd like to do this!
I'm a simple man : I see a sprint victory by Cavendish, I hit the like button.
Excellent details. I was interested by the bikes names.
Reminds me of the Cipollini sprint trains in the 1990's and early oughts.
Omg so much power
I forgot just how hectic the sprint stages were with 4 massive sprint trains. They're going so flipping fast on that big drag in
I didnt know you became a nameless droid when you signed up for Lampre-Merida #Lampre-man 😅 - Awesome video as always
Wow, what an all-star train. T. Martin, Kwiato, Trentin, Renshaw, Petacchi.
That's such a stacked leadout train 🤣
I feel like last year was almost a 6 riders train for cav on the tour even loulou was pulling him on the sprint finish and I hope they do the same this year cause the sprint finish are going to be contested widely
Lol at "Alan! Alan!"
I think if Cav sprinted like that these days, his handlebars would be DQ'd for deviating!😆
Jeez what a gap. love to see it
I find it fascinating how racing and squad build has developed, or just changed, over the years. And not very many years. It will be interesting to see how sprinters perform without the support.
And I am not saying zero support, I'm saying that sprinters will get 2-3 instead of the 4-5.
Please LR upload back the video you did of Remco in the world champs u23. He was laughing at everyone
Cray how that Lampre lead out man just pulled off and left a gap for his sprinter to close. Guess he must have had nothing left
Alan! Alan! I’m dead. 😂
guessing you don't have rights to the giro this year. grand tours aren't the same without these videos. GCN can't hold a candle to Lanterne
Throw-back to OG LR, do another video showing Lance breaking Jan’s will to live
I mean the days of "filmed with a potato" will have a place on your channel forever Lanterne
Great team + great sprinter = sports finest moments...
another key moment was that guy stepping out of the train at 5,22 created 2 bike length hole and dashed any hopes of a sprint
By now any helicopter shot of a suburban railway underpass has a Pavlovan effect of raising my heart rate.
Today, washed as he appears, Cav doesnt even need it.....he just blasts home alone from 300m out😳 Amazing.
Credit to Sagan coming from far back and snagging the last podium spot.
Why aren't you uploading Giro 2022 highlights?
Do the final stage of the giro 2023
I think the reduction from 9 to 8 riders really changed the makeup of the leadout train.
I mean, it is an absolutely amazing sprint train, and Cav might have won no matter what. But you did notice the crash in the final corner that ruined the sprint for EVERYONE ELSE except these 5 and the poor guy from Lampre? Seems to be a lot of praise for a sprint that was more or less handed to them by random circumstance and of course good positioning for the final corner avoiding the carnage.
Just goes to show that the sprint train is not only to give you an exceptional leadout, but it also keeps you out of trouble.
You did notice that LR mentioned that and that the turn is imperative to be at the front.
@lanternrouge. Analysis suggestion. Evenepoel vs Ganna leadout. Who you got?
Im on zwift as I type. Rep the sponsors boi.
that's hilarious!
Was there any HTC days where the leadout was better?
I understood every 9th word in this. Something about guys riding bikes and going fast.
That was the longest run on sentence I have ever heard.
Alan Alan Alan.... Steve Steve Ste Steve
let’s goooo first again they call me cav
Allen!
It's like watching Brazil ;)
Wasn't this dominance a consequence, for the most part, of the crash? The crashed gapped or took out everyone significant & left QS alone up front
My thought exactly. Bit strange to rave about this 'dominance' when it was the logical result of a crash in just the right spot. Still a fun watch though.
True. When I think of dominance I think of stage 18 of the tdf 2012
Sacré bleu 🥖
Looks like it would not have happened that way without the crash. Right? Those other guys had to chase like crazy to close the gap, and then the ones at the front didn't even have enough gas left to follow the leadout train
why wasn't Cav in this years Tour, i never did hear why.
Cav is such a lil nug 😂
I have no clue how they ride so close
I salute all of them.. it is a torture sport....
I think this shit is in my recc because im searching for the Tour de Farce crashes for that wimp who was knocked off by a of wet corrugated cardboard sign, hilarious
Those Lotto bibs 🤤
i’m not a massive fan of cycling but tend to watch le tour every year so forgive my ignorance but will cavendish make the tour this year?
It's probably unlikely unless Jakobsen gets injured. A shame, but more Giro stages is a decent compensation at least!
@@bazh6041 yeh i just read he’s in Giro. would of been nice to see him have a crack at one more at le tour. ah well
@@jodu626 Yeah for sure... gotta remember that his career was essentially over 18 months ago. To have got to today with 4 more TdF stages, equal with Merckx, and another Giro stage and potential for more, is an absolute miracle. Every extra day racing is just gravy. ....and you never know... QS might surprise everyone and send him to the Tour anyway (even with Jakobsen)... that 35th stage would be beyond huge for the sponsors so who knows?
@@bazh6041 and let’s face it the guy is rock and roll.
Title is missleading. Mark Cavendish IS one of the worlds best sprinters!
2022 team should back him at TDF. One victory to become the all time stage winner. Ad money will be through the roof for sponsors.
it could actually be a good tactic for Lotto to get some good points for the World Tour license, but then Ewan would have to be able to stay upright lolll
RENSHAW BRRRRRRRR
Lol he was sprinting against no one
Cav should gave this one to Pettachi
