Router Sled using Bosch Rexroth Aluminium Profile. Easy to use and cheap to build. Surface planer. Don't make my mistakes building this surface planer, router table sled.   • This is an excellent router sled! I recently designed a sled that I want to make YT video for and while our approach is different (I don't use guide rails), I really like your solution. Absolutely love the plate concept, though I do not have anyone nearby who can do that for me. Love this project! Keep it up!

  • looks a very good system. To stop the chippings getting into the track try perspex along the length of the track, if you then make a few slots for adjustment you can use the track either way, or failing that use perspex but cut it so it covers the cutting part and join it to the sled that way it will move with it.   • This is how i should have done my router surfacing setup. I used the 20mm round rails. Works fine on the outside but going across the 45" span on the gantry i get .04" dip with just the weight of the router. Not sure what i want to try next rather than dumping alot more money in this project

  • I pressed the like button but I always find it really hard, when you are a woodworker and know nothing about steel parts, to understand all the technical descriptions and just what they are talking about. Looks like a nice system though. Too bad there is no dust shroud or even an attempt at attaching a vacuum. I'd be running this inside my shop and I'd be coughing my lungs into a bloody mess in no time

  • Nice build. Modular and rigid. Only suggestion to use a plunge router so you have more clearance and some linear dust brushes to make dust collection a bit easier.

  • Hi i have just been watching you're video on the router sled. I built one from steel before which was horrendously awkward and had to be left set up so i am going to give you're idea a go. Just noticed in the video you said about festool making one with a quick release mounting plate but obviously they are expensive. I have the trend t11 which is an excellent router and they do a quick release plate that goes with there router table which im sure you can buy separately and all pretty reasonable on price.

  • Good, logical build. Would a length of "brush strip" door sealer attached to the inner section of the sled, stop the long channel from filling up?

    • Its a good idea. In the end I have just clamped a thin piece of wood to the runner 40x40 section. Its not perfect but certainly helps.

  • I don't have much to add, but in my opinion, if just one of the things I mention can help, it's worth writing it. ;) The 'table' is fairly straight, but sometimes a board like that could warp (twist) or even bow slightly (temperature, humidity, etc. - especially over time). I do not know if you know the 'string-trick', where you use a string to make a cross from one corner to the diagonally opposite corner; eg. left/front to right/back, right/front to left/back. This allows you to adjust the two rails to be parallel to each other in the vertical direction. When the strings just touch, the rails are parallel. It's a good idea to use thin and very strong lightweight strings, that will be much more accurate than using 'elastic', 'heavy' and weak strings (which bend down at the center). A bare copper-wire might not be a good choice, because if it's bent at any point it will easily become inaccurate. Thin fishing line might be a better choice than copper wire, it's lightweight and strong, but still a bit 'elastic'. You may want to lift one string above the other by the thickness of a string, to ensure accuracy. Yes, I think a vacuum cleaner (industrial or shopvac) might be a good choice; the most important thing here would probably be to keep the hose out of the way and also avoid that the hose is 'controlling' the movement or making the movement 'more difficult'. Using pipes fixed to the sled(s) where possible might be helpful, but unfortunately both X and Y direction limits the possibilities for using pipes. A hose coming down from the ceiling might be the easiest solution. Personally, I think you've made a good choice on using SBR20 on top of the aluminium-profiles. I've seen people use 'square steel bars' and get away with it for a single-time use. The router lifting slightly when tightening the bolts could be if the holes in the steel plate are not at the exact positions - it could of course be something else (including, but not limited to ... the contact surface not being completely flat or one of the bolts not being perpendicular to the base plate).

    • They are SBR20 guide rails. The prices very quite a lot so you need to shop around. I've bough some of eBay and others from Banggood.com.

  • thanks for all the info. I am planning on making a similar system router and saw jig. Would you recommend using the correct nylon sliders for both axis? Originally I was planning on doing a proper lineair guide rail on both axis. But it would save so much money if slot sliders were sufficient. There is also the option of using V-slot wheels. Honestly I am kind off lost in which lineair guide system to use and was wondering what your opinion is on the subject.

    • Would you recommend using the correct nylon sliders for both axis; No. The sliders dont slide as easily as you would want on the other axis. They work well on the long axis and even better when you add a bit of mold release spray to the 80 x 40 section, but for the shorter axis you need a steady glide over the wood.

    • V slot wheels.. way better. I'm making it this weekend with alu profiles 30x30..these wheels should glide smoothly even dough the slot should be stuffed with chippings.. they adhere only about 3-4 mm in the slot.. also easier to detach whole carriage with the router.. easier bit changing. Cheers

  • Hello! Thanks for sharing! What's the diameter fo the CMY bit, 50mm? I've got the same router, but just bought a Tornado 60mm bit from amazon and the clearance to the router footprint is tight, 1-2mm... I'm wondering if it's safe to use it...

  • Hello! I am currently using a flattening bit similar to the one that you were using first, but mine has 2 cutting edges and the result in not good at all. Actually is very bad.   • Bonjour félicitations pour votre système. Peut-être une idée pour la coulisse des rails... A la place d'une coulisse (avec nylon) sur la partie supérieur des rails longitudinaux, vous pourriez le déplacer sur les cotés extérieurs (avec un système en 'L"). Le côté extérieurs vont moins se remplirent de sciures que la partie supérieure...

  • Hey there, how exactly did you mount the srb20 linear rails to the 4040 extrusion. Is it simply drilled and screwed on, if so what screws are you using?

    • Hi, They are screwed on. I think I used 1/2" 6's self tapping screws, after drilling a pilot hole. Hope that helps.

  • - The MDF table can warp very fast with humidity. I would go for marine plywood with a steel-angle perimeter. - You can take a bigger diam router bit without using 100% of the width.

  • What is the purpose of the two 500mm sections that go between the sled and the main track? Specifically, the two pieces that you mount the sliders to as pictured at 5:42. Why not just mount the nylon sliders to to two 400mm 4040 pieces of the router sled and slide the sled up and down the main track directly vs. mounting the sled to an intermediate track that then rides up and down the main track? Was it to get a little more vertical clearance between the router and the surface?

    • Hi Timothy, Yes, that is exactly what they´re for. The 80 x 40 x 2440 (side) lengths can be fixed face down or on their sides (to the MDF,) which will increase the height of the sled and the 500mm sections can further add height if needed. The configuation all depends on the thickness of the wood you´re planing. Hope that helps.

    • With linear rails on both axis it would be necessary to lock the long axis rail each time you moved the router along it otherwise it would slip.

    • Here is a link to the Bosch Rexroth catalogs that you can download. The catalogs also include all of the dimensions for each part. It is also possible to download 3D CAD files of the parts, but I'm not sure if that can be found at this link. www.boschrexroth.com/en/us/products/product-groups/assembly-technology/index You can also buy a lot of the Bosch Rexroth aluminum profiles, gussets, bolts, accessories, etc. as used equipment from sites like Ebay. These types of aluminum extrusions are used a lot for experiment setups, temporary fixtures, temporary enclosures, etc. So when the project is finished, they can just disassemble the setup and resell the parts on Ebay. In many cases, the used parts are in nearly new-like condition, but they cost considerably less than buying the parts new. Ed
