What a pleasure this fine interview was. Nakadai was always one of my very favorite actors when saturating in the 70's with all the great Japanese Samurai films. Unfortunately for me, the interviewer did not explore the "Hot Eyes" aspect of Nakadai's screen persona, and for which he was duly famous. How did he come to that and what were his techniques to make it so compelling? Glad to see emphais on Sword Of Doom, a truly powerful film where one can sense the sword's soul and menace in and of itself, unlike any other film I've seen - there was a zen aspect to it. Thanks so much for posting this excellent insight of a truly great actor.

Stuff he did in "The Human Condition" was actually dangerous for his health, or even life. He was beaten and almost got hypothermia. And there was no insurance in such cases back then. So it is funny when I hear modern actors saying "I like doing my stunts". Tatsuya Nakadai says "Aww, that's cute"

A good interview, although I would have liked to hear about Nakadai's work with Kon Ichikawa (2 films) and Hideo Gosha (5 films).
Tbf, japanese now is garbage if we compare to the old japan movies. But the some pretty good.
One of the greatest actors of all time
Sanjuro finale A TRULY SUPERB FINAL SCENE = 1 Take. Now... Re shoots and re shoots and director changes over "creative ideas". These people were talented artists the like we will never see again. I'm still in awe. 1 take. Abayo...
N to think they using real sharp sword to cut the blood tube
Truly a legendary actor and person! Also, I my opinion, I believe Shintaro Katsu was under-rated.
A very good actor who played in major productions and much cheaper ones , but all very pleasurable !
I watched Harakiri today, and i have watched every Kurosawa film that he's been in. He is an incredible actor, no less talented than Mifune, and listening to him and his experiences is so enriching and wonderful.
He was so good in Yojimbo
Mesmerising interview; what a wonderful way this old actor has about him. A true master.
@BirdArvid. Who impressed you more, Toshiro Mifune or Tatsuya Nakadai?
@@hugh8861 Mifune of course, but I love Nakadai too. BUt there is no one in the whole wild world like MifuneToshiro, trust me.
the part were Tatsuya Nakadai say he thinks he nearing the end to that i say no its just the beginning
what a legend...
Not only is he an extraordinary and talented actor (unfortunately unknown in the West), but he knew how to choose the best for his career and act in freedom.
What a wonderful man and what an amazing actor.
this interview is so classy, great interviewer, the questions were great and it was wonderful seeing him reminisce about Kurosawa and other great actors and directors.
He said it himself....Harakiri was the best one....
No matter how I respect and truely admire Akira Kurosawa as one of the best directors of all time, "Harakiri" is my favorite Japanese movie and in my top ever. Hearing mr Nakadai explaining about the swords being real in "Harakiri" and how the weight affected the feeling of holding them, anyone can easily see the outcome of such a choice... masterful work!
Best actor ever. no doublt about that. yes even better then mifune. in harakiri it was soeomething out of space. his acting is so good even in space everyone worship him. im sersious about that. nakadai please come to israel
RAN and Harakiri are two of the greatest performances by an actor ever put to film.

My absolute favorite actor
Well into his 80's, still handsome, erudite, witty - I can only hope to age even partially as well as this great, great actor. I just watched his titanic performance in "The Human Condition" and then there's "Ran" and "Seppuku" as well, among so many others.
Tom Cruise: I do my own stunts Tatsuya Nakadai: Hold my saké...
an amazing actor who was in a lot of great movies
and still around, too.
Amazing actor
I think Nakadai showed his stuff most in Kobayashi's films as Mifune did in Kurosawa's films.
Agreed
If there is a cinema hall of fame, a close up of his expressive peepers should be a main display.
I'm always mesmerized watching this! His presence itself is breathtaking, while in the back of mind I'm picturing his roles in Sword of Doom, Ran, Kagemusha, Harakiri, High and Low, Yojimbo, and so on...
This was excellent. Nakadai San comes across as a thoroughly decent person. Thanks for this
What a legend!
Amazing interview. I could watch hours of him speaking about the movies, directors and acting...just amazing. Does anyone know where I can find more about him and the directors? I dont mean movies, but interviews, stories etc. and Harakiri and RAN are just masterpieces, before I forget.
Seppuku.
@@m.c.b.4323 Yeah but he's talking about the title of the film not the more respectable name of the act.
What an amazing and enlightening interview. Thank you very much. Such a pleasure to watch and listen to.
Weird me thinks 86 year old him looks better than when he was young!
He looks gorgeous, doesn't he?
Wow. Like a whirlwind taking in and sharing so much incredible Japanese film history. He lived it. We are the beneficiaries of that wisdom.
This is my first time to see the legendary 🙇 Thank you for this cool program!!!🙂👍
I think he is one of the best actor.
Magnificent! Thank you so much for this brilliant interview of my favorite actor.
i only recently had discovered nakadai and started watching his films, and already he’s within my top 3 favorite actors of all time. i’ve watched at least ten of his movies so far within such a short span of time, and they’re all just incredible pieces of work: ran… sword of doom… harakiri… the human condition… belladonna of sadness… yojimbo… the list amazingly goes on and on. such a legend. not to be a downer, but i’m going to be shattered when this man passes.
Just discovered him and Toshiro Mifune along with Kurosawa and Hideo Gosha. Amazing. Now I’m reading about feudal Japan. Sengoku period is a huge interest now. Ran and sword of doom is forever tattooed on my brain.
i also recently discovered him and am studying his work to improve my acting!!!
This was an epic interview. Nakadai San is such a tremendous actor!
This is amazing, thanks a lot for sharing!
You're welcome!
thanks for sharing these rare videos
Come to Brazil, Nakadai-san!
"The human condition" Trilogy..........His best ever performance........he is such a genius,God gifted actor Japanese cinema has ever produced ...... Sometimes I really wonder, is he portray natural acting or method acting...........
Right now on Harakiri ..Many more to go. Might watch this interview again later😍
What a privilege to listen to this particular interview! Life is so fleeting, one must capture the opportunities, ask the right questions and garner the insight before it passes just like the wind. What a rich life! Aaron Gerow! Or should I say Professor Aaron Gerow. The interviewer himself has achieved a significant resume of accomplishments that is worthy of an interview. Of course they would arrange the best in order to interview a man like Tatsuya Nakadai. I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Incredible. Thank you so much for this.
One of my favourite actors. Who in their right mind down-votes this?
Great interview! Thx. Greetings from Chile!
great interview!
36:50 that worked perfect if you think about it. Shows money isn't everything and in the end it seems that he won playing some of the greatest roles ever!
what an amazing person! too bad we couldnt have interview with great Toshiro Mifune
There is a nice interview with Toshiro Mifune on youtube, actually. You can see and learn a lot about the real man. kzhead.info/sun/qaaNgK5_jqaml40/bejne.html
@@42kellys thanks for the heads up I'm headed there now!
@@sonofaredshirt8329 I am sorry, it seems the video was deleted. I wanted to check which interview I put here and it was not available anymore. They must have taken it off, sorry.
@@42kellys that's very kind of you to get in touch, funny I found out immediately then tried to return to let you know, but I couldn't remember under whose comments I messaged you. LOL my enthusiasm for a new Toshiro Mifune interview got the better of me! Cheers.
@@sonofaredshirt8329 Well, there are some interviews but sadly they are all only in Japanese, so we cannot understand them. That is why I only directed to you to the one with real English subtitles which was unfortuantely removed since then. As you noticed, I wrote that answer long ago. it's a pity it was such a wonderful interview.
A good interview, although I would have liked to hear about Nakadai's work with Kon Ichikawa (2 films) and Hideo Gosha (5 films). Anyway, he is one of the few legends left from the Golden Age of Japanese cinema. There may be one or two others, but not many. Believe it or not, Machiko Kyo (the woman from Rashomon) is still living in her 90's. The older Nakadai gets, the more and more he looks like a Japanese version of Michael Caine - must be the glasses and white hair.
Machiko kyo R.I.P. she just recently passed.. never met her, but still felt sense of loss..
Yeah, she was 95. Pretty long life. I don't think they had her page updated before I typed this.
Super fantastic!
