Is the BYD Seal the EV you didn't know you wanted?

2024 ж. 23 Қаң.
56 191 Рет қаралды

The BYD Seal is a fully electric saloon car that rivals the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4, Polestar 2 and Mercedes EQE, among others. It costs from just under £46,000 and offers an official range from a single battery charge of up to 323 miles for the dual motor all-wheel drive model, or up to 354 miles for the single motor Seal.
Straight line performance is impressive, with the dual motor able to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.8 second. However, the Seal is no one-trick pony. In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott assess how this Chinese EV rivals models from Europe and the US, examining its space and practicality, its design, interior quality, technology, charging speed and how it drives. Would you consider a BYD over a Tesla Model 3?

We had a weather event late last year and I ran an extension lead inside and could run my portable induction cooktop, lights etc, and i even ran a lead over my neighbours fence so they could heat their baby's bottle. We also use it when we're camping so i don't have to bother with gas stoves. A brilliant and useful feature.

    • @@vasil7410 I hope the lower ground clearance than your Model 3 doesn't cause any bumper "scraping" issues for you? I cancelled my Seal order and have ordered a Model 3 Highland - for that very reason. More info in another post.

      @Paul-ow9dd@Paul-ow9dd3 ай бұрын
    • @@Paul-ow9ddI've discovered that the advertised road clearance on the Seal is a bit misleading. There are two soft rubber guards under the left and right sides of the front bumper that give it this low clearance. The idea is you hit these guards before damaging the bumper itself. The actual bottom of the front bumper is fractionally higher than on my Model 3. There are KZhead videos showing this and the option of removing these guards, but I will leave them there because they are serving a purpose. Indeed, they appear to be made so they can be replaced if they get too worn out. Edit: I should also add that the underside of the Seal overall looks higher than the Model 3. If this is a key criteria for you then I'd suggest inspecting the cars in person.

      @vasil7410@vasil74103 ай бұрын
    • @@vasil7410 Yep, closely checked clearance in person with a measuring tape with both vehicles. The M3 is better for my driveway entrance. I'm aware of those two sacrificial bits of rubber/hard plastic on the Seal, but they don't help on a steep driveway. The front lip of the bumper is the part that scrapes first, as it's lower.

  • The Seal is a reasonably comfortable EV to drive, and the AWD is amazingly powerful. Yes, it does have stalks - unlike the new Model 3 but look carefully at the low ground clearance of the Seal before committing to purchase. Reviewers have never commented on the lower ground clearance on this sedan/saloon or whatever it's called in your market compared to other similar vehicles. I had a Seal on order to complement our other BYD the Atto 3. I was concerned about the low appearance of the Seal from photos and numerous videos. Only ONE reviewer (in Australia) commented on the lowness of the chassis. My concern was damaging the front bumper on my steep driveway into my carport. Yep, only 2 centimetres of clearance at the front of the bumper. Some speed humps and parking space wheel bollards as well as poor roads pose a real issue for this vehicle. Make sure you're happy with its low clearance so you don't end up with buyer's remorse, as I would have. I cancelled my order and now have a Tesla M3 LR on order. It has 6 centimetres of clearance on my driveway compared to 2. Not a lot, but I can safely negotiate with that. Even my VW Polo has 5 centimetres of clearance - and the Polo is quite low.

    @Paul-ow9dd@Paul-ow9dd3 ай бұрын
    • Paul, I've managed to just about "beach" my Model 3 on its battery attempting to go down a steep incline into an underground car park and I have scraped my front bumper several times on curbs when parking. It's a low car. Apart from rubber guards under the Seal's front bumper, you may find the Seal actually has better road clearance. If it's this critical then make sure you inspect the physical cars, don't just rely on photos and specs.

    • Yes in a 30 min test drive of a BYD Seal out of their Brighton (Bentleigh) Melbourne branch the route took us down Nepean Hwy, a left hand turn into South Road then left into Grange Road. Then completing the circuit down a road with speed bumps. Observations: once under way from the lights in Nepean Hwy the Seal lifts its skirts. But over the speed bumps the front of the car bottomed. In Australia with most of these new EVs we’ve been “forced” to put deposits on new models (ATTO 3 and Seal) before test drives possible. Normally with a new car I’d rent one for a weekend before committing to a purchase. So not being a Tesla fan boy, the ease of arranging a Tesla test drive on very short notice encouraged me to test drive a Model 3 and then a couple of weeks later a Y. I couldn’t get over what a sharp drive the 3 was and how it threw you back in the seat. A 2 day Highland 3 rental last week couldn’t get over how quickly it changed lanes and accelerated doing it.

    • @@vasil7410 I'll have to be careful in the Model 3, but as I mentioned above I measured the clearance in my driveway and the Seal was an unusable 2 centimetres above the concrete at the front edge of the bumper. At least the M3 was 4 centimetres better at 6. I guess owning a VW Polo the last couple of years has taught me well with being careful over speed bumps, steep driveways and front wheel concrete stops in carparks. According to the UK Fire Service, around 33,000 petrol and diesel cars caught fire last year out of a UK total of 30 million ICE cars = 0.001%.
