Here is a fight tutorial on how to beat someone who spams leg kicks, in Muay Thai kickboxing and MMA. Knowing how to defend against low kicks is one thing, but you must be two steps ahead with your strategy when you go into sparring or a match. Here are a few ways to keep your legs safe!

  • This was insightful. Good vid. Back in the day I was only ever trained in the step in counter because my teacher was very into an aggressive style and everything was about smothering the opponent to take options away. He was never into backing away, and would always say that if you backed off to poking moves you were giving up control of the range. Step in can be vulnerable to feints though. I fondly remember catching my teacher once with some judo off a feint, but it wouldn't have worked in a shirtless match situation since it was shirt/gi stuff.

  • This video made me realize that I can still improve my game so much. I’ve been getting leg kicked so much and my answer is to take it or check it but i do it to slow so my knees get kicked. I’ve gotten some bruises and I’m definitely gonna try these. I didn’t even realize my jab left me open to leg kicks.

    • Just practice practice practice bro! I'm also getting hammered by dudes who love kicking way too much. I take little punches to the face and body but when it comes to kicks I just eat 70% of them, block 10% and evade 20% which is not ideal 😂 I don't like getting hit and it's frustrating but you just need to practice what you can do is make a partner throw a kick of their choosing and you'll have to react accordingly and that way you'll learn

    • I would like to see this as well. Also perhaps one or two ways to bait an opponent to throw a particular strike to counter off of.

      @MightyMatt28@MightyMatt285 жыл бұрын
    • MightyMatt28 look at how conor mcgregor gets his bait counters. in an open stance he uses his lead hand to busy his opponents lead hand, feeling their rhythm and not having to watch it for movement. then he lowers his rear hand and raises his chin, that way the opponent WANTS to throw something at the very open target and they can only use one of their hands. it’s rare that you see somebody throw a headkick, most of the times you will see a straight thrown at the head. influencing rather they throw a kick or a punch is more about distance control. be too close for kicks, stuff them up. just be ready to slip and rip! this is mainly used in open stances but i’ve found success in doing the same technique in a closed stance or using my rear hand to busy their lead hand, holding it out like a post, baiting them to hit me with their straight and then i use my lead hook as a check hook over top.

  • When I was in my 20s I did TKD for almost a decade then switch to CMA as I found TKD limited. We used to train at a park, there was a MT and Kickboxing group that used to train close by. In one occasion the MT coach came to talk to us and brought a student along. His intention was clear he wanted his student to test us out and I was asked to do it. The MT guy started using leg kicks which was the first time for me, I did not know how to respond and those kicks hurt. After the 3th of so kick I lost it, I finally decided to do the same then did a quick stance switch to load my right leg and leg kick him with a low jump. The guy stumble back, I entered with an uppercut to the solar plexus and drop him. We had no protection/gear at the time. I spent a week limping due to those kicks. Good times lol

  • I think the best way to defend against the low leg kick is bridging the gap, which is the last option in this video. Defense by lifting the front leg not ideal since every time your leg receives kicks eventually will hurt/ bruised/ injured. Retreating to prevent the blow requires light fast footwork, and since the distance between the two fighters is far enough, that kick can be re-cocked again, waiting for the chance to hit again. So i think the best defense is doing more of infighting, always bridging the distance to prevent that rear leg from doing harm to your front leg.

  • Good video! What about push kicks to the knee? Moving forward and backward wouldn't do too much since thats in the line of the strike. I guess you could try and move the leg in or out (left or right) out of the way, or take the weight off the leg so that it moves more freely (less force actually applied during the kick) not really sure how these would work out in motion though.

    @andrewciricillo9726@andrewciricillo97262 жыл бұрын
    • There isn't much defence against this. All you can do is keep the weight on that leg light. Severe acl injury has been seen in mma when a fighter steps forward with the lead leg into a more bladed, front-foot heavy western boxing stance and receives a counter teep or oblique kick to the knee. Avoid stepping forward. Keep your weight off your front foot. Thankfully, shots like this are illegal in most MT rulesets. No real rules in a street fight though.
