Islam Makhachev and UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski have already set the groundwork for a lightweight super-fight in Australia at UFC 284.
In a rare move: the defending champion called out a challenger. Makhachev and his coach, UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov, want to usurp Volkanovski as the UFC's No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter. They are willing to stake the UFC lightweight title to make it happen.

It was not easy watching Alexander Volkanovski beat some of my favorite fighters. Having said that, it was impressive. Equally impressive is the class & humor Alexander shows in his interviews and the lead up to his fights. 25-1. Damn. And all of his fights are exciting, too. This is a guy that should be as famous as Izzy. I wonder what it'll take for the UFC to throw some $s behind him the way he deserves to be marketed. Best of luck against Makhachev.

I'm so blessed to watch you fight Champ. You remind me of the old school toughness you only see on work sites and footy fields. You're proof of how nothing beats hard work. He is a beast on the ground, he just doesn’t initiate those exchanges because he isn’t the one panicking. You can go watch videos. people only watch mainstream fights and don’t know the mistakes islams makes. Getting dropped, escaped, getting caught in submissions… Alex will exploit those mistakes and his striking is a big problem for Islam.

I am pretty confident team Islam is gonna use the "short" joke a lot just to try and sell the "beef" and make it big for the casual fans although they probably see you as a tough challenge for Islam. Gotta realize Volk has improved in every fight. AND I think his power and speed at 155 will be formidable. People's champ no less.
