The big controversy in the game of Magnus Carlsen and Alireza Firouzja at the World Blitz 2019
In the 19th round of the World Blitz Championships 2019 the game between Alireza Firouzja and Magnus Carlsen ended with Alireza losing on time. But it was not all. For everyone asking for an explanation/commentary on what had happened: Rule is: if you run out of time, and your opponent could've checkmate you in ANY possible way, you lose... however if your opponent couldn't checkmate you in any possible way (he doesn't have enough chess pieces to do so like a king and a knight) it's a draw. 1:00 - 1:24 Alireza was running out of time (look at the left side of the clock that represents his time) with around 5 seconds remaining after every move vs. 18 seconds for Carlsen.... Because he kept smashing the board and dropping pieces unnecessarily, he eventually lost a few precious seconds every turn until he ran out of time completely 1:24.... The first argument was, since Alireza ran out of time, is it a draw or a win for Carlsen? (Is there any possible way for Carlsen to checkmate Alireza and win the game). Edit: fun fact, I believe Alireza and Carlsen himself thought it was a draw 2:16 !!! To everyone's surprise, the referee calls the game a win for Carlsen! The computer simulator 4:27 showed that there is one possibility for Carlsen to checkmate Alireza (which in reality would almost never happen, why would Alireza promote a pawn into a knight and not a queen unless he was very very stupid?) But rules are rules, 1- Alireza ran out of time + 2- there was a possiblity for Carlsen to checkmate Alireza = Carlsen won the game Now, Alireza, already mad at himself thinking he drew the game that he was so close to actually winning and beating the mighty Carlsen, completely lost his mind (and a little bit of his dignity) when he heard he ended up losing the game!! First he argued how is a checkmate possible 1:32 .........Then, at 4:45 he asked the officials to show him the rules book to confirm that by the rules, he lost....after he saw that with his eyes at 5:29, this is when Alireza hit a new low and started lying that Magnus talked to him in Norwegian at the very end which distracted him and made him ran out of time....(it seems he didn't know the match was recorded on camera)... Alireza (desperate and truly pathetic at this point) proceeded with filing an official appeal 9:00 and it looks like it was instantly trashed by the committee ... And that was it..gg!

We've all behaved in ways we regret when we were 16. The only difference with Alireza is that for him it happened very publicly and now he has been immortalised as having shaky hands (as if he's the only chess player who knocks pieces over in a time scramble), not knowing rules (even Magnus thought it's a draw because he only had a king and bishop and we're so used to that being an automatic draw), being histrionic and lying (as if none of us ever got upset and handled ourselves poorly).
also he had like 8 cameras in his face during the whole thing.
Exactly, he was just a kid. Look at all these losers in the comments acting like they've never conducted themselves poorly.
Yes but one thing bothers me even knowing he was 16 back then: A player of his level should know the rules. These are basic rules for this format.

Most of the young GMs/IMs (especially around 16- 21 years old) do really have a huge ego. Most of them would really not think about the way they say as long as it could gain something in their favor. Even if it's idiotic, they would try their best to win. It's hard to accept defeat in a match where you clearly (pieces speaking) ahead of your opponent but lose because of time. It was his fault tho, smashing pieces maybe because of panic.
It's just their immaturity.
You can't really say "I only lost on time." If the clock wasn't there or both players had much more time it would have been a very different game and you may well never have gotten to that winning position.

Carlsen said something at 11:39 in the video and the game ends at 13:30 , meaning they played well over 2 mins after that and Alireza had 8secs at that point carlsen had about 3, so Alireza gained way more time over the period but lost it when he slammed pieces , which is why his appeal was dropped because he lied he had only 2 seconds and that made him lost the game. It one thing to feel angry or depressed that you screwed up your winning opportunity (we have all been there). He had the right to ask for a rule book which he did , but after even been proved wrong he went on to look for another excuse,if he’s qualified to be a super gm he’s qualified to know better. it’s another thing to accuse your opponents to try and get him penalized just to win, Magnus understood his frustrations afterwards but Alireza saying because magnus swore that distracted him?? Common there are noise of flash lights more distracting than that going on in the background. It would be a clever metagame strategy :)
Those are just endgame principle which Carlsen obviously knows much about
I will say the rules were kinda broken, because Carlsen because there was ONE possibility of checkmate only if Alireza would promote pawn to knight which is not something he would feasibly do but the rules are rules But even Carlsen before everything started was like the fair result would be a draw, but he won because of one small thing But then Alireza just does the dumbest move he's played, not in chess but in life
actually he doesn't even needed to promote to any piece to get mated. If his king went to h8 and bishop to h7 and Carlsen bring his king to f8 then basically any check with the black bishop is mate. So it is not only one possibility like you said, but still not something any player would do
Magnus knew he wouldn’t promote to a knight but also knew this little tournament trick.

@Quantum Zain But the game went on for much longer Alireza made it seem he said something at the very end.
Quantum Zain Alireza should’ve paused the clock and called the ref but he continued playing. If for example someone made a touch move and the Opponent didn’t call it they would have to go fuck themselves as they didn’t call the ref and missed an opportunity
@Quantum Zain so alireza placing his pawn in between fields is okay then i guess xD
In that position not necessarily to have knight for checkmate. Just simply put white king on h8 bishop on g8, and black king on h6 ,finally black bishop can checkmate if we put on diagonal a1to h8 !!!
Magnus played it smart at end by moving bishop back n forth quickly to add small seconds to his clock. He went from 4secs. To 15 secs. While other guy remained at 4 and 5 secs until end. @12:20
They can be world class players, but that doesn't take out the fact that he's just a child in the process of learning to lose
Great comment! Well said
That’s fair, but I’d be pretty pissed if I spent the last 5+ years grinding to get to GM, getting good enough to play against the world champ, then have the game be a win for black instead of a draw because it is possible, if white promoted to a knight and suffocated his king (which wouldn’t happen) to checkmate with just the bishop. Nevertheless it is his fault his time ran out, no question. The problem lies (it seems) in the rules where if black *could* checkmate given some absurd circumstances, then they are considered to have mating material.
@@ryankoski2499 it's interesting, if white had less material, say just a pawn and king or king and queen, and lost on time would it be a black win or draw

This means even if my opponent has a knight and I have a pawn and I lose all my time, then my opponent wins. Coz the engine shows the way in which I lose with position like my king and knight(promoted by the engine) on a8 and b8 respectively and my opponent's king and knight on b6 and c7 respectively. It's still a checkmate.
If you look at the recap footage at the end, you can see at the time that Alireza Firouzja mentioned, Magnus Carlsen did not speak at all and Alireza did not look like he was getting distracted at all, it looks like both players at the time mentioned in the appeal that they were making facial gestures like they were thinking about how to go around each other's pins or checks. Aid yeah but to whom your saying this , A 16 year old who isn’t even matured enough Edit : ok I get it but sometimes you gotta understand what went through his head I am not saying that he is correct , I am just saying that he can be forgiven considering his age And did I mentioned this thing happened 1 year ago
1. People coughing 2. You can clearly hear clocks from other tables 3. You can also hear cameras too 4. Yes Magnus sweared but seeing all other stuff i doubt his concetration suddenly dissapeared 5. He spent more time knocking pieces around and distracting Magnus with it
Yep damn true
The complain was that he did it in 2 seconds or 4 secs left when magnus sweared he had like 8 seconds
bringing he said/she said - he offended me (politics) into the perfect game should be discouraged. It is the perfect game - no luck, no judges, etc. - strictly person against person across a board with the pawns and pieces.
I am missing the reason for the knight promotion. If he were to promote to a knight its still only mate if he actively assists in the mate. But then why do you need the knight, the knight adds nothing to the example mate, you can reach the same position without it. Move K to h7, take pawn on g5. Move pawn to e5. Then K to h8, K to f8, B to h7 and take on e5 in some move order. I can understand needing the knight if the mate is delivered on e5. So position from 4.30 and then Ke5 Gpawn becomes knight on d6. Black king on g5 and then mate on the A1 H8 diagonal.

Maybe if alireza didn't knock every piece over on the board each turn he wouldn't have to look for excuses 🤔
shouldnt that be a foul?

Everyone: seeing the match carefully Me:there's a football court on the ceiling 😂
Magnus should've said "you mad bro? get quicker kid"
So guy lost cause of time, then tries to complain that his opponent was talking and that distracted him which his opponent never said a word. He lost on time cause he kept fumbling his pieces and now he is being a sore loser.
Carlsen swears in Norwegian at 11:37 while he had 8 seconds on the clock. I don't think it effected the game that much and I'm not defending Firouzja crying about it but Carlsen did say something.
Thanks i was not understanding at all lol
He's on edge because of the way the game is declared a loss and not a draw (it's the rules I know but it's clear it was impossible for him to lose), so that point must've surfaced. I totally agree with the claim being refuted though.
@@guspartschmuth592 It's completely legal to say "fuck". If you want to beat up people, stick to boxing.
He was getting excited thinking he was about to win so he started to shake more and more.
Guy almost beats Carlsen and he doesn’t know the rules of chess. Fascinating.
Not really ... he is very young .. 16 years old and emotional.
@@staticx1324 Just to get it straight though, can you talk during a chess game? like I'm sure you cant scream in your opponent face... what does the rule say? talking allowed or not?
kid got frustrated, that is all
@@DrMa7sheye According to FIDE Laws of Chess - Article 11.5, "It is forbidden to distract or annoy the opponent in any manner whatsoever. This includes unreasonable claims, unreasonable offers of a draw or the introduction of a source of noise into the playing area."
He lost the moment Carlson had two pieces left and saw the win. He never stood a chance. Taking pieces does not equal almost winning. Fascinating.
I swear i see anish in the background of every video. He was everywhere 😂
Ahh found someone who noticed! He was also in the Tata Steel Firouzja video!
A bad looser? yes. But to call him a clown or make fun of him? Come on guys. This guy was only 16. What were you doing at that age? He'll learn.
I heard he was speaking in Klingon saying :”your time is almost out. Stop dropping pieces” in between his breathing

LOL... so true. And Firouzja appears to be so damn good, we just might be able to root against the little jerk for decades!
@@jackm4457 I don't know about others but to me he seems a very ignorant and displeasing individual. I despise his lack of fair play. This is not future World Champion behaviour.

@@brayx6697 I'm starting to think it's some sort of meme in pro Chess to have annoying noises in the background.
Its the sound of the A/C unit cause these chess matches get heated.
It probably was a PS 4 LUL
It's Carlsen's private Jet
He is such a young kid. He is just disappointed that he lost a chance to beat the world's best player. He will learn to be more graceful in defeat as he grows older. I wish him all the best.
Where I come from you call that a brat
He had already beaten him Before that match and he is too strong player at very young age may be the next world champion may be you don't know alireza
Personally I disagree. Personalities don’t really change that much. Reminds me of John McEnroe for some reason

@@dibya8590 yea I guess. I’m just saying that from my 40 year experience on this planet people are either born classy or born sassy lol. I think Odin was whispering in Alireza's ear to distract him.

If you watch closely, he runs out of time because he keeps knocking pieces around. He took too long to pick his final move back up and ran out of time. As well, Magnus never says a word while it's happening.

Not a huge fan of this rule. I get why it's there but it ends up punishing the person for being in a winning position. The fact that alireza had the extra pawns is effectively why he lost. Barring of course the lost time for knocking pieces over
The rule is fine. Running out of time should be a harsh outcome and nearly always result in loss. Don't run out of time.
