This Volvo S80 has the ONLY V8 Volvo EVER put in a car

Today I'm driving the Volvo S80 Sedan. What makes this unassuming car supremely cool is the fact that Volvo drop the famous Yamaha 4.4l V8 into it, the same engine in the Noble M600 and the Volvo polestar V8 race cars. Joey' car is awesome so some along for the ride and listen to this fantastic super saloon!

  • For anyone that needs to hear it: the title says the only v8 Volvo put in a car, not the only car Volvo put a v8 in. Also, they mention the xc90 in the video. No clickbait. Just poor reading comprehension.

    • As pointed out by someone else, it was in a concept car and doesn’t really count if it didn’t go into production. (IMO) It WAS used in trucks from 1956-1966, but still doesn’t invalidate the title of the only v8 put in a CAR.

The die-cast open-deck aluminum Volvo block is clearly different from the sand-cast closed-deck aluminum SHO engine block although the two engines share many common dimensions including bore centers, stroke, bearing journal diameters, and deck height. Hard to think that the same people that designed the successful SHO engine wouldn't use any of the same design elements in the Volvo V8. That's why Yamaha got the job.

My last car was a Mustang GT (2006). As far as the Volvos power compares, its slower off the line but feels faster during highway pulls. Car handles like a boat. Comfort is good. AWD does its job. Bought it with 113k miles on it, seemed pretty clean and I test drove it several times before buying it for 3.8k. Second time driving it after buying it I got an oil leak lol. Small, but still. I had a 94 Trans Am for the longest time until it broke down and then I bought a 6th gen Camaro almost 2 years ago. So it's hard to compare since it's been so long since I drove the Trans Am, but I do have to say the Trans Am felt a bit faster, though that may have just been because it had such a hard launch. Bought the Volvo as a winter car and while and it can definitely pull, feels about the same as my Trans Am for highway pulls but still not bad. And it still pulls really well at 40-50, it's actually pretty fun. Lovely car, and it carries the weight well. I just wish I didn't have it in beige :( RIP Stang. I've always liked The Mustangs and Trans Ams, and now the newer Camaros. Love the look of the newer Mustangs as well, because of that I almost considered Trading my Camaro for a Mustang but I just like the feel of it too much compared to the Mustang. Definitely fun having such a unique car as this Volvo though!

If it is leaking its an extremely small leak. 3.8k for a V8 S80 is a really good deal. I live up north where there is a premium for AWD cars. I paid 6.5k at a dealership for mine, 93k miles. I love the old Trans Am's. I miss Pontiac. My Volvo is white with the beige interior. I dont like the interior color. :) Have fun with your new car. I'm going to go ahead and just assume it's not good, especially if you're also having a possible rear main seal leak around the same miles... That's how my Trans Am went. I still have it, just debating what to do with it still. So hard to make the decision to get rid of it! The Volvo was definitely a good deal though. Probably not many people looking for a V8 S80, or even know about it. I sure didn't, it's just what I happened upon when I was looking for quick v8 cars with AWD, and there happened to be one in Utah. Tell me about it, regarding Pontiac. I only wish I could see where they would be right now if they weren't put down. Good luck to you and yours, Hopefully it's healthier than you're concerned it might be. The lack of it never needing anything, sort of scared me, but I took the plunge. Its my 2nd volvo, and absolutely adore this car! I did replace the leaky valve cover gaskets; video is up on yt. I also added a Becker exhaust system, rear ipd anti-seay bar, front strut bar (made for a v60 orig). All my mods are on my channel if anyone is interested. The trans is what I'm concerned with... • The Volvo B36 is a four-stroke, cast-iron 90 degree petrol V8 introduced in 1952. It develops 120 PS (88 kW) at 4000 rpm and 260 N⋅m (192 lb⋅ft) at 2200 rpm. The engine weighs 235 kg (518 lb) and displaces 3.56 liters.[1] The two-port Carter carburetor and intake are located between the cylinder banks. The crossflow heads are of a cast iron alloy, while the five-bearing camshaft is of a case-hardened steel alloy. The engine is often said to be a twinned B18 four-cylinder, but in reality only some parts in the valve train are interchangeable between the two engines. This engine was used in the Volvo L420 Snabbe truck, amongst others. It had been developed by Volvo for a planned luxury automobile called Volvo Philip in the early 1950s, when this project was cancelled it was installed in a truck instead. Due to excessive thirst, diesel engines soon became available in this range of trucks. The B36 was discontinued in 1973, although it had no longer been used in trucks after 1966. It was the last petrol truck engine built by Volvo, and the only V8 engine in any vehicle except for the newer Yamaha built unit used in XC90 and S80. A marine version was available, the Volvo Penta AQ180 boasting 180 hp with twin carburetors.

However Volvo put in the V8 in a pick-up truck/ small lorry called L42 "snabbe" -the fast one! Late 1950-s. Later Volvo used the V8 as a marine engine. Nice video Btw. All the best. Magnus
