How do you feel about Sheldon Keefe taking responsibility in his goodbye message to Leafs Nation? How do you sum up Keefe’s tenure with the Maple Leafs? Who do you think should be Toronto’s next head coach? Can the Maple Leafs win if the core stays intact? Bryan Hayes joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss.

We've never had a Norris trophy winner, ever, in over 100 years of existence. They can't even sign McCabe!!! Defense, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. McCabe and Benoit need to stay. They're not always perfect, but they understand sacrifice. That will get you farther in the playoffs...

    @Glennstestsite112@Glennstestsite11215 күн бұрын
  • Step One is accomplished - coach fired,even though he wasn’t the problem. Step Two - culture change too soft,incapable of consistency,motivation,grit,will,desire,commitment,drive,discipline,will and heart. Need to break up the core four. Marner is the poster boy for not stepping up in pressure games. Too busy figure skating during warmup instead of back checking. Tavares signing was a waste from the get go. Step Three - get a coach who “scares” these players and holds them accountable. Step Four - Number One Goalie Step Five - Defence wins championships,offence sells tickets during regular season but playoff hockey needs defensive commitment. Step Six - Shanaplan 10 years - 1 playoff round series win. What other NHL organization would accept or tolerate that ?

    @grantchow13@grantchow1315 күн бұрын
    • Step 1. Keefe is an incompetent playoff coach for the NHL. Hired with absolutely no NHL experience by a GM with no NHL experience. Step 3. Babcock already "scared" the players but he wasn't retained. The league is afraid of the image that Quenville will portray and is a PR nightmare. Step 6. Why do you think Shanahan hasn't been fired? Could it be he's better as a business-man than a hockey man? And, the owners only care about $$$.

      @ScubaSteveCanada@ScubaSteveCanada15 күн бұрын
    • Yes a coach that can light a fire under them without being gagged by the Front Office is needed. Keefe had to apologize when calling them out and that's just wrong. The Front Office should back their coach for being honest when needed. It's not about the players it's about accountability.

  • Gerard Gallant as new Leafs coach👍🤔? Radical suggestion: if John Tavares isn't willing to waive his NMC, then is it worth the Leafs buying him out? It would cetainly send a very loud message to the remaing team members and Leafs fans, about the new path being undertaken.

    @HAL9010-sv1gh@HAL9010-sv1gh15 күн бұрын
    • No way willly or matthwes will work with gallant. Gallant better fits Buffalo... I think Tornto need a calming veteran presence...Keefe wad calming but I don't think he has much to show. AV is a good identity guy but ya Todd can get to guys when they ACTUALLY deserve it and not go over board like babs or tortz. The thing here though is tortz and babs got it done... JT I'd the leafs best veteran. Kinda shocking to see how fast people Wana write him off... Trade marner. He plays scared and you can't rely on him to step up when you need him. Overrated defensively and I see him as a Wana be superstar finding himself on the 2nd line. A classic Alex lafernire prototype who is DEPENDENT on star players.boosting his stats/ coach putting him in situations that make him look better then he is. Gallant and berube gunna make the team fall. Rod on the other hand is an interesting take.

      @iainbell6556@iainbell655615 күн бұрын
    • @@iainbell6556 Yes, I absolutely get that point, but the reason for my question was basically because if the Leafs organization was genuinely interested in blowing things up now (as opposed to firing Keefe and then just making minor cosmetic changes around the edges) AND taking a far tougher, less indulgent approach to this team's supposed leading players going forwards, then buying out John Tavares (particularly if he proves stubborn as regards any possible move out, this off-season), MIGHT provide the kind of system shock that many of these guys clearly need. It would effectively state for all to see that 'business as usual' is both over and no longer acceptable in the future either. John Tavares is a decent guy and I really don't dislike him at all. However, this is not really about him, but rather about starting the process of dramatically changing the direction and playing staff on this team. In that context only, perhaps a buyout just might make sense, then.

    • @@BrownKnee666 Hey, thanks for the detailed comeback, here. Take your point about Gerard Gallant, but in this case, I felt that giving the coaching job to somebody like him just might give the core of this team exactly the kind of kick up the a**, that they definitely need to see. Your take on Mitch Marner is pretty spot-on, by the way🎯. Bottom line: MM will not get down in the trenches come playoff time, and he simply loses focus and positional awareness with alarming frequency at key points in big playoffs games. He says all the right things, but when push comes to shove, he just seems to lose heart and interest when the going gets heated and/or physical. Thanks for your great reply. Enjoy your hockey out there👍!

    • Their is really no reason to trade JT. If anything he has been the most consistent maple leaf out their. Matthwes is good but disappears on and off the ice playoffs. Something with his attitude... you know it is true that they got into playoffs with big injury problems but that's not an excuse. You got to game 7. You had your team put their. You lost. Reilley don't get enough credit carrying a crap blue line. Littoral crap. When brodie is your 2nd best defenseman you know that management got their head up their ass.... 1. Pesce, Montour. Get them. Locke them up. 2. Resign doomi not bertuzzi. 3. Gallant. Remember what happened to him and the bread man. You don't want that. Gallant and berube emphasize a hard d game. Todd gives the team freedom but holds them responsible. I don't think Keefe did that and relied soly on offense because he is a Dubas guy and just proves offense does not win games. Just big contracts. 4. I wouldn't fire Shanahan so fast because I would.blame it more on ownership and ya treliving kinda making his mark but didn't hit the spot. The only good singing/ move I liked from him was Domi, giving Robertson a chance, McMann looks good not sure why he wasn't in playoffs so much, and Joel edmudson. 5. Your role players in kampf jankrook and Reaves are terrible. Use that 5mil to get a God damn top 4 dman or at least 2 guys that can play defense and not have Ilya fucking lubuahkin playing with Morgan reileyy. It's a joke. Morgan ain't no EK65 so stop putting your players against the grain here and value them for what they are and build around them. Let's not lie to ourselves. 2 last quick observations. Krider is not a captain because he doesn't hold that oh so valuable intgaiables. Good hockey player. But that's not captain material. JT is a captain but not on this team. This team lives and dies off of matthwes. So give him the responsibility. I'm sure JT will make a great A with Morgan and no fancy stuff with rotating A's. Simple and clean. Matthwes JT Morgan in that order. Matthwes needs to feel the pressure for some reason I think he is not playing balls or heart our their more then marner. The culture needs to change and players and staff can't be like... tight group we were close. It's not hood enough. You lost less then 5min In OT. Be honest. It's not good enough and need change. Not dramatic but something gotta go. Last but not least. Ian Cole, Carson Soucy. A+ signings. Buffalo tried to take a page out here as well with Johnson and Clifton but those are clearly not the guys you want. These are #6 guys, Cole and Soucy are your best bottom pair dman and they say, you can only go far as tour weakest link. 1. Identity 2. Culture 3. Accountability It's all about intgaiables.

Todd has coached half the league already. He's not that guy. He would make ZERO difference from Keefe. A also like Gallant for this team if all else fails.

He isnt an erik karlson who just needs methot. Reilley gunna be handicapped with a brodie by his side. Get brett pesce. Get montour. And get by the forst round. I mean how do you sign john klinberg? Spending 40mil on 4 guys to score goals so why you getting a 4th foward. Red flag. 1. Hire Macleanan 2. Trade marner ( 3 guys and picks/prospects). Sure fowler is older but he clearly still is a top 4 dman and sit would be the best defamen they had in 5 years beaides reilley. Thats progression if you ask me. 3. Matthwes Captain Last note. • Grubauer for goalie. Get better D, not just cross trade D , no better, judt different, they need to be bigger, faster, strong and tougher and smarter ! Get rid of Mathwees, a 7.62 cal. DUD. Ok in regular season, but always dissapears in the playoffs , always ! The Flames have some good forwards who can put the puck in the net. Try them ! Tradeing those 2 can immensly help the Leafs. Now, lets talk D ! Where can they can good D ? Rilley should stay ! Liligren should stay ! Domi should stay. Marner ssould stay, Bertuzzi should stay. BOBBY M should stay. I dont see much on the D that should stay ! Good D is hard to find ! Dumba is 1 Help me out guys, who can help the Leafs on D, that is big , strong, fast and tough, and smart. Mike.

  • Acting like he was a great coach because of regular season record is goofy. The Leafs roster had all the talent in the world on it when he took over. They were supposed to win a ton of games. He never exceeded expectations once in the regular season. He never met expectations once in playoffs. Any junior A coach could have a good regular season record with this roster. Team was already a lock for playoffs every season when he took over. Dubas wasnt building a playoff roster either, it was purpose built for exactly what it did.

Compare the Rangers, Stars and Colorado. You'll all be saying the same thing as soon as the Oilers are eliminated.
