Hotel Inspector, with Ruth Watson - Key West Hotel, Newquay (Brian and Jill Scott). Series 2, Episode 3 (20 July 2006) (Channel 5).
Brian is an absolutely lovely and endearing man
This couple has a good sense of humor and they agree and cooperate with the Hotel Inspector instead of getting defensive and refusing all help. They deserve to succeed.
Ruth is so funny I miss her doing this
A single business man arrives in a tie and you can't anticipate he is the inspector? Give him the best room and shuffle the coach party.
God I cried in the end, what a lovely man
I will never understand why some people work hard most of their lives, save up a very nice sum of money to fund a very comfortable retirement, and then throw it away on a business they know nothing about, that drains them of almost every penny they have.
People grossly underestimate the amount of blood, sweat and tears that go into running your own business, especially in the hospitality industry. They think 'I've stayed in hotels before. How hard could it be? '
Needs a desk clerk and someone to inspect rooms after cleaned to make sure they were cleaned properly. His wife could do these two jobs.
Brian what a wonderful person. Had me in tears at the end.
When he was squeezing his arm when he was stressed/moments of criticism, worried me as a sign of an angina. 😔
I live in Newquay. This hotel was knocked down. Flats built there. The metro they visited is now an India. Restaurant and flats.
Thanks for the update from Newquay. Hopefully Brian made a profit selling the land to a developer.
@SamHughesBRITNEY thank you for giving us an update. I sincerely hope that the couple made a profit and that they are enjoying a happy retirement.
You could see it coming. The hotel was not worth fixing up. It appeared to be cheaply constructed with add on(s). Hope the lovely couple were able to recoup some of their losses.
once again, it pays to listen to Ruth. I'm glad she got to work with this nice couple.
Brian and Jill deserve all the best. They work so hard and are such good people. We wish them well🙏
Awwwe!, this guy was soooo! sweet hearted. I’m so glad he surprised himself.
Ruth is business advisor, tough school mistress, cheerleader and psychologist rolled into one. excellent mentor
I guess Jill’s computer training didn’t go all that well, lol. What a sweetheart she is. Both of them are super people, and in their naïveté, they got lied to about the condition of the property and then encountered guests who trashed the place and stole from them. But, they just got on with it and didn’t turn jaded or cynical or go on about how hard done by they were. I don’t know that I would have weathered the storms as well as they. I don’t know how it is in the UK, but here in the US, we have almost no what we call “mom and pop shops” left, as corporate America has run them out of business.
Lovely couple. And listening to advice.. i hope they're happy and healthy still
That 90s/early 200s decor is making me nostalgic :)
It is ridiculous the number of people who think they're going to go into the hotel Business without understanding anything about how to actually be successful in the hotel business boggles the mind
Whenever I watch the hotel inspector I always feel most struggling hoteliers are people in a midlife crisis who done an impulse buy!
I know keeping up w/ my own home w/ 3 kids is a lot of work. I couldn't imagine all the work these places take. No offense but especially their ages. They must be pooped at the end of the day.
Potential Hoteliers should first go to Hotel Skool. Premises should be inspected first by property inspectors. Then a better valuation price can be negotiated.
What a lovely couple. A nice change from the usual horrible, arrogant people we found in this series.
Best advice of all for this couple was to now sell the success to someone else who is better suited emotionally to handle that success. In commercial real estate, there are many entrepreneurs who look to buy degraded properties for a low price, fix them up and sell them for a profit, not unlike flipping houses. If this couple does this, they can be debt-free, retire and enjoy life for their remaining years. No one should ever take their identity and self-worth from business success like this guy did. That was the core problem from the beginning.
I wouldn't want to be Buried in this room 😂😂😂😂 bring back Rute please
Ruth has her own website and Instagram! She just posted pics of the Queen's funeral 🙏 Wish she had a KZhead channel.
What a lovely man Brian is, but so self deprecating, bless him! I wish him every success and hope that he can get the business profitable, or he can sell and retire!
A lovely couple. Those beautiful new tables and chairs won't last long though with a cleaner bashing them with the vacuum cleaner!
Brian and Jill are both so wonderful!! i hope they succeeded. that hotel needed half a million quid spent on it though and they simply dont have it..
Ruth is such a Great Lady. Love her
One things for sure….you NEVER EVER put a plain or light coloured carpet in a dining room!!…..and preferably not even a carpet but tiles or wood…..schoolboy error!…..I know, I own two good restaurants….
For once someone actually took notice of Ruths advice and did something to change things - with some enthusiasm I must say. Brian is such a sweet man and I hope he has the sense to get out of a business he is not equipped to work in
I've been searching for the "Ruth" episodes for years. And I find THIS ONE!!! TODAY!!! This episode is circa 2010. I remember watching this episode back then. The hotel, the situation, the story ... Brian ... this one hit me. I LOVE THIS STORY! Brian's reaction when he EARNED his 2 stars ... ... priceless! Happy to find another who enjoyed this one. Cheers! IIRC... there was as followup episode (or an add on/extended episode) of this one... Ruth visited Brian and Gill in their home some time later... and he sold it! And he seemed so much more happy. This made my happy. Hope I can eventually find that episode as well. Cheers!
@@frodrickfronkensteen9241 Good to hear they eventually sold up. No one needs that much stress.
I think Brian is great!
I to think he did vert well. And am happy intheir new life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💞🥰🤗
Wow when Brian talked about the rugby club at the end.he was teary. 😊
It looked like an elderly nursing home to start with. After some rooms being re-decorated it looked much better. Hope they can do all the rooms in time.
I cant believe how low the Hotel prices are! In America the rate of $25 would have been back in the 1970s.
25 pounds in 2006, considering inflation, would be about $50 today, but still. I think the low price was part of Ruth's concern.
Dining room is night and day better with the new decor
I love Ruth. So raw with her comments.
I'm no prude, but I'd prefer that, as a woman, she present a more professional demeaner. It reflects on other women trying to compete in business. We don't have to aspire to be crude like so many men are. Once in a while where appropriate is okay, but twice in one sentence comes off as just too disrespectful.
The first thing you do when your interested in a property, is visit it without them knowing.... stay a week.... people watch, do a traffic count, etc... walk the property, get to know the area.... do all the intermediary with an attorney first...so they dont know you are looking to buy the place... and then hire an inspector, plumber, electrician and GC to go over the entire property as well as an accountant to review the books.... then you decide whether to buy it or not from there.... just common sense.... Red flags.... get your hotel office upstairs in one of those too small crap rooms by the front entrance... pool table is in too small of a space to properly play a game dead flowers in the front baskets... dingy and no style, nothing looks refreshed in 30 years... boring menu and hes stuck with his customers liking 1964..... yet he has no customers?????? I see nothing wrong.......... leaking faucets.... (MONEY LOSS) proper training will help your housekeeping, along with a check list they must complete for each space. where's the marketing? What's his outreach? a sensor bell is needed at the door as its opened, not stuck on a wall no one greeting you when you come in... the list goes on...... The updates definitely helped... I think if they look at re-glazing the tubs and sinks instead of replacing them... and re-caulk and refresh where he can, it would make a large improvement.... he also needs to stop micromanaging and share the load...
Very enjoyable, thank you for uploading.
So they didn't bother with a pre-purchase inspection and either they didn't look at the books or the books were fudged? I don't get it.
Does that lovely little dog have any legs ?
how about the wooden floor they found under the hall carpet ..... seriously WOW
It’s not that important to me but it is important to Brian…….why wasn’t it important to his wife ?….
I commented on this episode years ago ie. She actually does nothing but walk around with the dog. He spends his time dashing around trying to deal with everything that crops up. Stop: Re-think the whole thing. I'm always amazed that people forget any business, marketing systems and fall into some vague muddling through life. I don't get it. When they had the idea to own a hotel didn't they have a plan. Even looking at this type of program , such as Hotel Impossible, Alex Pollizi, Ruth Watson. Would give you clues about what is needed. Become a student of the hospitality industry. Hotel Management. Marketing in the modern world. Get it together before you start on this very expensive journey.
That is what I don't understand in these kind of tv shows. Do you really need somebody to tell you to clean the bathrooms? They sign up for the show so they have seen the show but don't get a clue? Or maybe they get paid to be stupid to make the show 'interesting' I have also noticed that what Alex Pollizi hates and considers horrible is different in every episode.😄
@@sparklemotion8377 Alex's sense of style leaves much to be desired. Ruth's is less specific, but reasonably accurate.
True about style but I think Alex is more personable, not as rude as Ruth.
Ruth is very witty and must be. When something is horrible, she may say, “ it’s extraordinary.” Extraordinarily horrible!!…..room of rest!!! Thank you, because, you got have a laugh along your journey. These owners now know what it takes and can chip away at their rooms.
"We were led to believe the building was in better shape than it was." So it's someone else's fault that they risked every penny and went into this with eyes firmly shut? Thank you for the video!!
The old chestnut, it's what my customers want, ok but what customer?
Awe….so sweet.
Thank you so much for uploading these! They’re impossible to find anywhere. Do you have any more from series 2?
Yes, I have more that I will be uploading. I'll try to get some more done this week. :)
Thani you! 😁
@@inhighspeed PLEASE!!!!! And thank you for these!
@@inhighspeed And you are someone who responds - thank you a hundred times!
Love the approach, but it does always boil down to people not having money to make the necessary changes...they are struggling, because of too much debt, below-par quality due to lack of money needed for upkeep and that's that; a vicious circle all on its own seperate from personalities, quirky outdated perceptions of hospitality in an ever increasing cut-throat market, etc.. It is nice that this programme gives/gave them some money to make overdue repairs and Ruth Watson does the Lord's work. Bless her.
and CLEANING !!! 😅
I hope Brian and the wife got out of that terrible place and are enjoying life
I realize this was aired a long time ago, but even so --- aspiring to 35 pounds still sounds super cheap to me (an American) even accounting for inflation and exchange rates, etc. How was it so cheap?
That would be equivalent to roughly $65 today, which indeed sounds pretty low. I suppose in large measure one can only say that you get what you pay for. : )
Love the Couple and their outlook. Unfortunately, it is only a 1 Star to me and only the downstairs areas. The rooms are still hideous and should stripped of everything and just start afresh!!
Oh myy 🥴 this is so depressing. Id just torch it & take a cruise!!
I got a funeral home feel for me as well..
This is building is now flats
Anybody knows when this was demolished and turned into flats.
Why doesn’t she put the dog down and get her hands dirty doing up the property
Jill just is NOT the office/computer type!! its just not her..let her be!!!
Good for him, he earned it.
You should always to see what others are doing !
Texan, here. I’ve been enjoying watching RW pounce on various unsuspecting characters on this series. May I ask, why the cups are turned sideways on the saucers? Before covid, we would have them set in breakfast houses (IHOP) with the cup turned upside down. When I was younger I wanted to own a bed and breakfast, but I’m extremely glad I never went down that road. Thanks for the videos.
I did see some of the tea cups upside down on the breakfast table. However, I got quite interested in your question and spent some time looking up the answer. Tea cups should be the right way up with the handle turned to the side. Is that what you were asking?
Not sure why the teacups are slanted like that, but I can say from years of living in the UK, it's not uncommon in nicer establishments.
I imagine the prediction came true.
Such a shame, a load of work to be plowed down. Let's hope they took some knowledge with them!! And some profit!!
So i do wonder if they still run this place or not? Has there been an update, some episodes are checked up on, so it would be nice to know!!🙂
He is doing great but I hope he sells for his own sake.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️🥰🤗
Kirka? OMG circa!
The pronunciation of circa as "kirka" (with a hard "c") is the correct pronunciation in Latin. It is also the pronunciation one is taught in British preparatory schools.
4:45 😂😂
I felt he deserves 3 stars for customer help regardless of the horror of waiting 2 minutes all by yourself in a room with a couch, lol!🌟🌟🌟🍾🍾💲💲🎭🎭
17£ 😢 Could turn it into a backpackers would suit
@jewels3895 good idea - but a bit late since someone on this forum has mentioned that they building has since been demolished and a block of flats constructed in its place.
"Leak and Potato Soup" sums it up! Clueless!
Leek !
they don't have enough equipment in the kitchen and it's out -dated.use of is UNworker friendly .
Sorry but, Why name yr place ‘Key West’ if nothing near or to do with Key West?!
I'm not sure of the connection, but there are plenty of hotels and guest houses with misleading names such as The Palms, Castle in the Sand, and The Sahara. It's not where it's located but rather more to do with the feelings and images it evokes.
The key is taken from Newquay. Although spelt differently obviously. They are in the West of the country.
Where's Alex?
Arriviste. Ruth established the paradigm.
That 'metro' place looked just awful...generic corporate tat.
They still have box tv😂😂😂
This was filmed almost 20 years ago. Many still had old-school, CRT televisions. I had mine until 2019. I don't even have a TV nowadays, I no longer have time for it. Short bursts of KZhead now and then are quite enough for me.
Ruth some people can only afford coach holidays ,we’re not all rich like you
I feel so badly for them to have so little money and try to increase their standards. It really shows the early hotel inspector episodes weren’t as effective. I’m glad they actually take a more proactive approach and put money into helping the hoteliers now. I wish them well.
I'm not sure I agree with the diagnosis, but just going with it ... I think the early episodes were generally more effective, insofar as they weren't focused on just throwing money at a problem, but rather looking at the underlying issues that were at the root of it, i.e., teaching a man to fish rather than just throwing one at him. It is also more helpful for others watching to see how they might themselves effect changes in their own businesses if they happen not to be in a position to invest a ton of new money. By the same token, even in the Ruth Watson episodes some money was put into the business by Ruth and/or the production company, so we saw some of that approach as well. I think Alex does the same, so I'm not sure that any of this is necessarily a matter of Ruth vs. Alex. In the end, Ruth's advice and expertise was priceless, as is Alex's, although I think that Ruth overall is more practical in her approach, and I prefer her episodes. Thanks for the input.
I get bad vibes off ruthless tbh 😢
