Create Stronger Landscape Photos With A Tighter Zoom
Landscape photographers love wide angle lenses - I’m no exception! Yet there are many strong photos to be found at longer focal lengths. Telephoto and long zoom lenses are not just for wildlife photographers. In this video I show some examples of where tighter compositions produce a much stronger image.

Hi Scott, thanks for this examples. I like especially the first one to see what to get out of an ordinary „was there“ image.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Scott, another great tutorial! I’ve learned so many things from these quick tip videos. I do wonder how many photos I can sometimes make from a single image. This is excellent advice to look further into the photo. You might be surprised to find a more compelling image. Roger
Hi Roger... thanks for taking the time to comment. Find the "photo within the photo" is a good exercise to improve your eye. Try it out with images in your library or backlog. Like you said... you might be surprised! :)
I did enjoy this video and found it very useful in thinking differently about landscape images. I agree with your choices on these two scenes. Processing software continues to steadily improve at sharpening heavily cropped images, which gives a lot more flexibility in choosing what to pack/hike with, for those who prefer to travel light. I just recently returned from a small-group photo tour, and a couple of the participants had full-size bodies with telephotos for wildlife but instead of a second body and/or other lenses, were just using top-line Samsung or Apple phones for wide-angle landscape and macro shots. The rest of us were impressed with their great results and thinking, hmmm...
100%. I'll break out my mobile phone for photos, too. Low angles are much quicker and easier with the phone :)
Hey Scott. Just love the photo of the painter. Had you considered a portrait orientation for this image ?
Hi Warren... I haven't tried a portrait crop on that photo... I'll have to give that a try.
