    • I've never actually watched that show but that scene gets me every single time. I pretty much grew up without my Dad and I remember when my mom told me that my dad has our contact info when she had sent the divorce papers and I was always hoping for a call, or a birthday letter, or just any type of contact. I remember I would pray in the shower for just any sort of contact but it never came. By the age of 19 contact was finally made but it was thanks to my aunt and her friend finding me on Facebook. Once again, wasn't my dad who put the effort in. I know live with the man but I never call him dad. Something just isn't there. I get along with him, but there is just something missing that i'll never have.

But over the last few years we rekindled our relationship and I came to understand how it was that he couldn't take care of me, as he couldn't take care of himself. rip dad. wish i got to take care of you in your old age.

  • Two years later, this video makes me cry still. My biological father bailed on me just after I was born. When I was about 5 or 6, a gentleman named Paul was dating my mom. Eventually he married her. While we had our ups and downs, one thing that stood out to me was the fact that he NEVER referred to us as "stepchildren." We were his children. Because I didn't bear my biological father's last name when I was born, by my mother's surname from her previous marriage, I plan to honor my dad by taking on his surname legally.

It sucks because I can relate since my own mother had left me, once when I was two, and again when I was thirteen after she tried to get back into my life. • My dad abandoned me the second he found out I was born, also leaving my ma in the dust to fend for herself. She had 3 other children at that point, 1 which she gave up for adoption. Coming from a very poor and corrupt country, she knew it was gonna be hard to raise all of us, so she made the super difficult decision to give me up for adoption as well. I got super lucky and ended up with 2 of the greatest parents I could’ve asked for. 19 years later, I’m in college and working for my dreams and making them proud everyday. While I never got the experience to have a mothers love, I have 2 dads to give me more love than my real dad ever could give me. Appreciate your dads, fellas. I never got to hang out with my real one, but these 2 saved my life and give me all the love in the world

  • I wondered for years why my dad never bent over backwards to raise me like he did his other kids. He left me and my mother, and not much has changed. My sisters got a normal childhood, while I had to figure everything out for myself while my mom did the best to manage both roles. It’s why I’ve made it a point to love my kids the way I’d wished for years to be loved. There isn’t a damn thing on this earth that would make me stay away from my kids. Even if he didn’t see it that way with me.

  • Being adopted, for a long time I had the mentality Will had, “how come he don’t want me?” All my life, and even to this day I still feel some level of rejection for it. It has affected my self esteem and always worried those who are truly loyal to me will still dump me easily because of that initial rejection as a newborn. I’ve come to look at my adoption more now as two wonderful people took in a child that they had no obligation to. To all step children and adopted children, thank your stepmom/dad or adopted parents. They did the job that someone else was supposed to, but they answered that call instead.

  • I don't know why, why I am here, but some part of me just to hear and listen to fathers saying to their child as how much they love them and how proud they are to them, I never get to enjoy my time with my own father, now I really regret my decisions back on how I treated him, I take it all back everyday on what I said to him and what I did to him to upset him, he is no longer with us, I would do anything to just have some more time with him, and fix our relationship, he passed away 2016 and his death anniversary was just this month, and his birthday was last week, I really want to spent time with him. I never get to enjoy the time of what and how it feels like to be raised by a father, when I grow up into a fine young adult and having my own family, I will shower my own children of fatherly love as I don't want them to be miserable like I was growing up.

So go the dads who actually put in the work to be an active part of their kids' lives.

But he still wants what every kid wants, the unconditional love of a parent. Even though he knows its not his fault, Will still feels like he failed because he didn’t receive that. I know that pain. • Will smiths video hits differently when your dad leaves you... i related to will on many things, but... i couldnt express how much it HURT... when he asked “how come he didnt want me?” That question is what i ask everyday after he said he was divorcing my mom and then not even 3 months later tell me he was in a relationship with another woman with her own kids... I was in college, all alone, 4 hours away from my mom, and he tells me all of this while i was just learning to be a college kid... then suddenly he started living his own life with a new family... i felt replaced... i felt... forgotten... and what hit the nail on the head for me was the broken promises and the lack of effort to make up for those promises... The worst part is i cant HATE him... i can never tell him how much i want to hate him for how hes made me question “what if i was never born?” And “would my parents have been happier if i wasnt born?” Im 25 now, and im sobbing as i type this out... To all the dads out there, love your kids and hold them tight... even if its hard now and you TRUELY love them, let them know... hearing that a dad says “i love you and im so proud of you” mean SO much to your kid than you think...
