With all due respect to Sebastian Shaw, I wish they let David Prouse play Vader when Luke takes his mask off. I think it would've been a great tribute to how he played vader physically throughout the OT. Also, it would've worked out bc I think he looks more like Hayden Christensen than Sebastian Shaw does
Agree. But as you know, there was a conflict between Prowse and Lucas. That s why David wasn't in the unmasking scene.

I totally agree. David Prowse should have played Darth Vader unmasked. I recently read an article mentioning that George Lucas refused to let Prowse play Vader unmasked because Prowse supposedly was all over Lucas about wanting to be Vader unmasked. Apparently, Lucas got fed up with him and got another actor, which I feel was a huge mistake, thus disappointing many Star Wars fans.

The only problem with this is that Sebastian (sort of) sounded like vader where as prowse sounded nothing like him.
James Earl Jones is legendary. You can't replace him to be the voice of Darth Vader for any other Star Wars related product.

Truth, but, sadly, we are going to have to accept second best. He's gotten old and wishes to retire...and has, from doing Vader. Can't blame him. He did offer a ton of material for future use, and his voice can be AI replicated for use to give Vader life again. It may not be perfect, but it is the best we can have, now.

I think that Darth Vader character is eternal and timeless because of his armour and anyone could play it. But James Earl Jones voice is unique. No one can beat him.
agreed... there was no real reason to keep using Prowse... however, 1/2 of Empire was multiple actors playing Vader

Poor David Prowse.. he lived his post Star Wars life in extreme bitterness because of the total lack of recognition of his role in the saga. Never got over Lucas’ decisions.
George had not paid him the bonuses he had the other cast. A multi-billionaire denying a working man his paycheck? Keep in mind that Mr. Prowse never had any true fame; this income was a significant element of his livelihood.

I emphatically agree! Mr. Lucas had accused Mr. Prowse of essentially leaking spoilers. This despite the producer's specious dialogue in the script, expressly to obviate such a possibility. All this over Mr. Prowse's glib, off- the-cuff remark to the press obliquely referring to story content he could not have known. At 3:03, the narrator says that the swordsman and stunt double Bob Anderson replaced Mr. Prowse for the lightsaber combat scenes in the second and third episodes, and all the second half of Return of the Jedi (1983, 20th Century-Fox, Richard Marquand, John Williams). I heard differently. In the scene where Lord Vader, shortly following his defeat to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), threw Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) down the elevator shaft, Mr. Anderson, a tall, thin fellow, lacked the strength to work the stunt. Mr. Prowse, on the set and in costume, offered to play the scene, despite a sprained knee. He completed the shot in one take, even to raising the Sith Lord over his head with both arms!

Prowse got his royalties, but he wasn't much more than a stunt man... and yes, he was extremely famous in UK for the Green Cross super hero his wealth comeasurated his actual accomplishment...Lucas never accused Prowse of that.. it was many of the British crew and fellow actors. Not to mention, Prowse was horrific in the public interviews he gave, filled with racial slurs and inaccurate details.

Toward me, he was the quintessential polite British gentleman. And very gracious toward this gangly, long-legged visibly misshapen, pasty, bookish, extroverted, garrulous nerd half his size. My sole corroboration of these encounters has passed.

It is so nice to see that Hayden Christensen would reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader filling in the shoes that David Prowse left behind as the iconic dark Lord of the Sith even though James Earl Jones retired these people are still the ones that brought the dark Lord of the Sith to life I really hope that one day Disney visit the old republic era bringing dark Lord of the Sith such as Reven or Darth bane to life I would really love to see Darth bane in his or burlesque armor
Nothing will ever replace the iconic voice of James Earl Jones. Not even Reespecher. But I have to massively respect the Ukrainian company for bringing the voice of Vader for Kenobi on the eve of the Russian-Ukrainian war
Vader has always been a very complicated character, 1 The Voice ofcourse, 2 Vader in any Action scene is likely not always going to be Easy (Hayden needs to eat his Wheaties), 3Prowses gait and gestures are unique, Vader walks with a purpose but never looks rushed, He gestures with a natural authority (RO wasn't right with that) but never looks like he's "Over Trying". Getting Vader right could be maddening, so much is nuanced and natural, other people (Or machines) unaccustomed likely will need takes and takes and takes with alot of watching the scene and/or listening, comparing that to original and deciding "close enough or not.
all these films are exciting. and fun to watch!
It makes total sense to have James Earl Jones do the voice of Darth Vader dubbed over David’s. No disrespect to David Prowse but when you hear him speak with his British accent it just doesn’t really sell the character

So the original Darth Vader is Mr Prowse and Hayden's Darth Vader was a remake but it shows the his backstory until he fall in grace and became evil they are both great actors and both iconic

EDITED FOR ERROR At 1:54, the narrator tells us that the mask needed padding. A few years past, I saw Mr. Prowse say in an interview that the costume, helmet, and mask fit snugly because the fabricators expressly had tailored it to his tall, robust frame, and his head and face.

Great vid! Altho I think you're wrong about where the name Darth Vader came from. I saw a vid a while back where someone said it was actually from a Russian Novel / movie (George Lucas used to watch a lot of those in the 60's and 70's apparently).
Just Googled it, the Book/movie "The Andromeda Nebula", and the character who leant his name to Darth Vader was "Darr Veter". Might be worth having a look into, after all, you can't trust the internet anymore than you can trust newspapers these days lol. Lucas has talked a lot about the inspiration he drew from Russian cinema, so I'm inclined to believe it ;)

The name "Vader" does NOT come from father in dutch ! As you said it just before, he originally was NOT Luke's father. It probably comes from "Invader" because Vader first appearance is when the Empire invades the Tantive IV (such as "Sidious" comes from "Insidious", describing how he became the Emperor).

I hate that people use the on set footage to mock Prowse's accent. He was an actor. On set he would be shouting through the mask. So the other actors could understand their cues. If he was brought back to foley his lines he would have acted and as an actor he would have probably ditched his Bristol accent. His voice would doubtlessly have been altered in the same way that JEJ's was too. I agree JEJ's voice works best but they could have told him before hand. Similarly Peter Serafinowicz had to buy his own ticket to see the Phantom Menace and only found out his voice had been replaced in the Solo movie when he took his children to see it.

Darth vader name comes from the dutch word vader which is dutch for father. Vater is the German word for father. In the original draft of the movie darth vader was going to be called donker vader which means dark father.

Darth Vader's name has nothing to do with the Dutch word for Father. That was a coincidence discovered later. You are perpetuating misinformation by repeating what you heard as fact, you mindless sheep. In fact, like most other names in the series, it is either a word for harm (maul, grevious) or a shortening of a sinister word (Sidious the insidious, Vader the invader)

@@SBNEnter it's not true. Vader and Luke's father were separate entities going all the way into production of ESB. It was a change made during the rewriting of the screen play. The term Vader in dutch meaning father is purely coincidental.

Dave Prowse has such a distinctive body language and lanky body type it's painfully obvious when he's not in the costume - even worse when the actor is short. You can totally tell and it's awful looking.

vaders mask in the prequel looks horrific and the costume was entirely incorrect to the one used in a new hope.... they really blew the continuity
the costume was created and designed by John Mollo, a british costume designer....not Ralph McQuarie, although he did draw some early ideas. And the German word for "father" is Vater... not Vader...which is Dutch NOT Duetsch (i.e. German) it's not okay to get so many things inaccurate... this separates the real pros from the youtube wannabes.

I hate the Revenge of the Sith Vader suit. It looks so.....off. The helmet is so large and bulbous, and what little neckpiece there is seems to slide under the shoulderpads....so odd
