  • For those wondering: the crunching chewing nose he is making when grinding his teeth is "bruxing" and when his eyes look like they're bouncing up and down, that is "boggling"... Both are signs a rat is very happy and content. It's like purring and snuggling from a cat.

Even the small guys deserve respect, for the love they gave me is an experience that has changed me forever. It's a little late but my condolences my lovely rat fan friend. @sellbydate@sellbydate11 ай бұрын
    • @@sellbydate LOL! Even though rats are not normally eaten by people, rats are still part of the food chain. By nature, ALL animals, especially referring to those in the wild, are part of the food chain. This means that somewhere, an animal is going to be eaten by either another animal, or by a human being. Humans (for the most part) are at the top of the food chain. 🍀 As for certain farm animals (such as cows), a few of them do get lucky enough to be converted into pets... especially at farm sanctuaries. 🐮🐓🐐🐏

      @sellbydate@sellbydate11 ай бұрын
    • @@sellbydate Sure! I realize now that I should have worded it a little differently. What I meant to say is, there are some animals that were *_destined_* to be pets (it was in that particular animal's destiny, such as John Smith's pet rats). I wasn't referring to only certain types animals, such as dogs and cats. I was referring to any animal, in general. _That's why I brought up farm animals, as an example, in my comment to you._ Sometimes people make them into pets, even though they aren't traditionally seen as pets. I hope this clears things up for you. 😃

    @debbiethemadbee@debbiethemadbee2 жыл бұрын
    • I agree. Ice Cube looks like a Dumbo rat, which is a heavily domesticated breed. They are sweet and mellow and would not be able to survive in the wild. Humans seem to think we can just domesticate any animal, but when we get bored of them, we think we can just throw them out again. Maybe that’s the case for snakes, which is why we have such a huge problem with invasive snakes in Florida.

      @janeE011@janeE011 Жыл бұрын
    • @@janeE011 Pet rats differ from wild rats in a few ways. Rat breeding is not even 200 years old, arose from the interest of pied catchers to learn more about their "prey". Over the years, those that were less aggressive/shy towards humans were chosen for breeding, leading to the pet rat. Unlike wild rats, pet rats are extremely tame, even in the absence of human contact. Likewise, they are no longer afraid of light, and are also very active during the day. Basically, any species can be domesticated. It only depends on the will and the necessary time, since domestication takes place via reproductive selection (animals with particularly favorable behavior are deliberately crossed with each other, this takes time, since this process takes place over many generations).

I love my rats and they love me right back. Btw, having rats in the home keeps the real (wild) pests away, haven't had any rodents coming up in here since they've been around😉. The one place I called, the guy said, "Well, we don't have any gerbils. But we have rats!" And I felt a certain way about rats, pretty similar to your views actually, lol. I told my mom and she said, "Maybe you should get rats instead?" But... still, lol. I didn't want rats. Well, we visited the pet store to get some supplies. The rats were in the cage, and the shop keeper let me hold one... I was so endeared, we took two of them home the same day. I've had them for a week and a half, and even though they are still adjusting and have had a few mishaps here and there, I love them. They really changed my perspective on the species. • You did good helping Icecube. I’m super proud of you. Your act of kindness speaks volumes of your soul. You will see each other again one day. You took excellent care of one of God’s fur babies and you will be rewarded with more than the love you showed.

  • I give thanks to this woman, not only for her kindness and compassion, but for the love that she shows this little fur baby. Thank you for rescuing him. I was crying tears of joy for the both of you. He looks so happy to be with you. You've rescued him from the cold and now he's showing you his thanks. My faith in humanity is slowly being restored from these stories that have happy endings. May God bless the both of you.

  • One day I was outside taking photos in a railway yard, when suddenly I saw a rat playing with a crow, which I thought was interesting. Then, the rat ran towards me and up my leg. I was shocked, but I knew then that it was domesticated. I advertised everywhere looking for his owner. Nobody came forward. I was able to keep him for two weeks before I left on vacation. "Nosey" was so cute and loving. He loved sitting on my shoulder and chattering in my ear. I wasn't allowed pets in my building so I ended up having to give him to the SPCA. I'm glad I was the one who found him. I miss him! 🐀

  • My God he is so darn cute. That was horrible what happened to him losing all those appendages. Some people can be cruel. Then again we have people like this wonderful lady that has given this little guy so much love and safety. This really makes my heart all fuzzy inside, my wife's chopping these damn onions making my eye's all watery.

  • I got a pet rat for my daughter when she was young. She wanted a hamster but the female rat just seemed like a better option for her. We both fell in love with her. She used a litter box, played with the cats and dog. She was amazing and we will never forget her. Her name was Kitty 😁 and she went EVERYWHERE with us.

    • You're an amazing mum. Rats are really really good pets for kids. Contrary to popular belief, they're very clean and intelligent little things. It's just a shame they don't live very long. It's amazing you and your kid got to share the world with beautiful Kitty, and got to know how sweet and intelligent they can be. I wish they were given more time in the day and more people accepted them. As a kid my family had four growing up, each were so unique. Woodstock, Cosmo, Basil, and Daisy. It was never easy when they passed even though we knew they had really short lives, but I would change a thing. They saw these lumbering, evergrowing giants and loved on us as much as we loved on them. Thank you for being an amazing mum, and rat mum haha. It's not easy deciding to get a rat
