Flying American and United 737 MAX - How Airlines Are Bringing the MAX Back?

I recently flew with United on their B737 MAX 9 and American on their B737 MAX 8, on domestic flights within the US. This video details the flying experiences of the 737 MAX since its grounding.
My United 737 MAX 9 flight was from Miami to Houston. The pilots talked about the cockpit of the 737 MAX, the MCAS and the system in general. I review the MAX passenger cabin and speak about my thoughts on flying the 737 MAX.
My American 737 MAX 8 flight was a quick one from Orlando to Miami. I met up with aviation journalist Chris Sloan in Miami. He flew the first 737 MAX flight, since its grounding in the US, on an American B737 MAX 8 from Dallas to Tulsa. He visited American Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Centre in Tulsa. Pilots of American talked about how they were trained to fly the MAX with the updated cockpit software and the MCAS system. The engineers talked about how long it takes to update each MAX and re-activate the plane from grounding.
Chris also shares his stories from behind the scenes, on how Boeing was rushed by customers to build the MAX instead of a producing clean sheet narrow body airplane.

  • The fact that the MCAS system only used one sensor is an incredibly stupid oversight. First rule of aircraft engineering is redundancy. That lesson was learned decades ago.

    • Unfortunately, bean counters operate under different set of rules.

      @magellanmax@magellanmax3 жыл бұрын
    • That's not oversight, that's stinginess! Even too stingy to build new landing gears, so the new engine would fit.

      @dirkbecker2961@dirkbecker29613 жыл бұрын
    • It was done on purpose. Apparently if it had been done properly with both sensors, it would have been considered a “major system modification” and would have added expense to the extension of pilots’ type ratings from the NG to the MAX. Of course now the cost of the MAX grounding and upgrades has dwarfed anything the bean counters would have saved, but they still get their raises and bonuses and of course no consequences for their actions.

      @amtrak706@amtrak7063 жыл бұрын
    • MCAS? The fact that they had to resort to software solution to compensate the aerodynamic flaw that appeared because they had to use an oversized engine that no longer fit the 60 years old airframe is the actual stupid decision.

    • @@Napoleonic_S That's the point. Everyone is crying how safe this plane is now, but I've my doubts. It's too highly modified by bean counters that don't understand the dynamics of flight.

You can pretend like there are many choices out there but the reality is that the major airlines will be using the 737 MAX as it is cost efficient and quite honestly it is safe and nice to fly (short distances). Airbus simply cannot produce. Maybe you will fly in a Comac...in 2050.

  • I just flew on a max after flying the older 737 back to back. The max was noticeably quieter and the buffetting when flight attitude transitions seemed much more subdued and smooth. May sound strange but the flex in the wings seemed to help tremendously. I've got to think all the updated systems helped as well. For example the dual pronged wing tips. Nice to see such a simple fix. Where they can just turn off mcas if it's not working properly.

    @clifflee5404@clifflee54042 жыл бұрын
    • This is an old comment, but the wing is the exact same with the exception of the winglet at the end. It flexes the same amount. The thickness/quietness of the skin is the same too, but I agree it just seems better all around

While it is good to see the Max flying again, I personally am still a little hesitant and will give it a year or 2 before purposefully flying one again (I know there's a chance I could fly on one due to a schedule shift or it being the only option). • I am interested if with a power failure would the plane be stable enough to fly on throttles with neutral control surfaces, albeit with difficulty, like that DC10 where a rear engine failure blew out its hydraulics? People say fighter planes are unstable but they do have zero zero ejector seats. Unless it is all so automated nowadays such that no electricity no fly. It is interesting how much redundancy there is compared to more inherently aerodynamically stable aircraft with increasing loss of pilot control if automated fly by wire systems start to fail.

  • People who says they won't fly on a Boeing seems to justify with a zero airbus accident record...... No one wants to have an accident but simply saying airbus is better is not much of an argument because I can find quite a big list of airbus accidents. In my opinion when someone has the most the lose, I'm quite confident they'll make sure it's bulletproof.

The problem with the Max was the MCAS which was fixed and now all pilots receive special training for the system. It’s normal to feel a bit scared considering what happened and how easily Boeing let it happen, but it’s hard to believe the planes are not safe now. If something happens the odds are to happen when you fly a 737-800 too as those aircrafts are maybe 20 years old.

  • I flew a United MAX9 Houston to San Jose a couple weeks ago. Great flight and never had a minute's worry about it. Since recertification, MAX aircraft now have over 300,000 flights and over 600,000 hours with zero incidents. With all the attention, scrutiny and review it received, the MAX is probably one of the safest aircraft to fly. While there are likely some folks who are still hesitant or refuse to fly on a MAX, you wouldn't know it by the flight I was on - every seat was occupied. And apparently, airline companies are too concerned about the MAX safety with over 4,000 planes currently on order with Boeing.

  • Before the Max crashes the 737 had one of the best safety records in the business. Remember the 737 was certified in 1967. But in the 1990’s it was grounded because of a condition called runaway ruder caused by a servo unit manufactured by Parker Hannifin. Two crashes killed 153 people which caused the grounding of the plane just like now with the MAX. The plane that came out of that accident investigation became the safest plane until the Max accidents. I have no doubts that just like before, this new 737 will be the best and safest aircraft ever built. I flown in the 737-8 already and I am perfectly satisfied.

    @MrRawnerves@MrRawnerves3 жыл бұрын
    • 737 is a great plane but it is old and not efficient. The MAX is a bad modification of it. Because of new big engine the plane is not balanced and it wants to go nose down but they compensated this with software which uses the tail aileron. For normal weather situations this will work but in case of emergency when you need to pull up fast the nose of the plane it will fail.
